Man Used Neighbor’s Electricity Without Permission, Then Demanded Money After Getting Towed

A simple boundary dispute over an outdoor outlet turned into a neighborhood feud when one neighbor’s EV ran out of power and he expected someone else to cover the consequences.

OP says the outlet attached to their garage is connected to their own electric panel and belongs to their property. After their neighbor bought a used electric vehicle but delayed installing a home charger because of the cost, he started using OP’s outlet without permission. OP initially handled it politely, explaining that the outlet was private and asking him to stop.

However, the neighbor continued plugging in his vehicle, even leaving the cable connected during rainy weather. After another incident, OP decided enough was enough and installed a locking outlet cover.

Days later, the neighbor’s EV battery died during his commute, resulting in a $280 towing bill. Instead of accepting responsibility for not having a charging plan, the neighbor argued that OP should pay because there was no final warning before the lock was installed.

The disagreement now comes down to whether OP should have offered one more reminder or whether repeated warnings were already enough.

A homeowner locks his outdoor outlet after a neighbor repeatedly uses it for EV charging, causing a dispute over a tow bill

'A or B: My neighbor kept using my outdoor outlet to charge his EV, so I locked it. His battery died on the way to work, and now he wants...

My neighbor and I live in side by side houses. The outdoor outlet on the side of my garage is on my property and connected to my electric panel.

About two months ago, he bought a used EV.

He told me he didn't have a home charger yet because an electrician had quoted him around $2,400 for the installation.

Not long after he got the car, I noticed a charging cable running from my outlet to his driveway. I talked to him about it and he apologized.

It happened again later, including one night when I found the cable plugged in while it was raining.

I left a note explaining that it was my private outlet and asked him not to use it.

I eventually caught him plugging in again and told him directly that he couldn't keep using it.

He said he only needed a quick top up and didn't think it was a big deal since I wasn't using the outlet anyway.

At that point, I bought a $22 locking weatherproof outlet cover and locked it. I didn't send another warning because I thought I'd already made myself clear.

Last Tuesday, his EV ran out of charge about six miles from home while he was driving to work. He had to get it towed to a charging station, which...

That evening, he came over with the receipt and said I should pay because I had locked the outlet without warning him first.

He said he knew I didn't want him using it, but didn't realize I would actually lock it.

I told him I wasn't responsible for making sure he had access to an outlet that wasn't his.

Now he's upset, and his wife told my wife that I stranded him on purpose.

Another neighbor thinks I should have given him one final heads up because we still have to live next to each other.

A) I should have warned him before locking it. I knew he was relying on the outlet, so I could have avoided the whole situation with one message.

B) I had already made the boundary clear.

If someone keeps using your property after you've told them to stop, you shouldn't have to keep giving warnings before doing something about it.

Few things create tension faster than a boundary that one person sees as obvious and another person treats as flexible. What begins as a small inconvenience can become a much larger conflict when one person believes they are making a harmless request while the other feels their property rights are being ignored.

In this situation, the homeowner’s frustration came from a repeated pattern rather than a single incident. The outlet belonged to him, was connected to his electricity, and he had already explained to his neighbor that it could not be used. The neighbor apologized but continued plugging in the EV anyway, including during rain.

From the neighbor’s perspective, the outlet may have felt like an unused resource that created an easy solution to an expensive charging problem. From the homeowner’s perspective, however, the issue was no longer about electricity. It was about whether his clear “no” was being respected.

A different perspective is that the final locking of the outlet changed the situation from a verbal boundary into a practical barrier. While the neighbor was wrong to continue using something after being told not to, the homeowner knew the neighbor had developed a habit of relying on that outlet.

A final message before locking it might have prevented the tow bill and preserved the relationship. However, preventing someone’s poor planning is not the same as causing the consequences of it.

Psychologist Harriet Lerner, known for her work on relationships and boundaries, explains that healthy boundaries require clearly communicating what behavior is acceptable and then following through when those limits are ignored.

She emphasizes that boundaries are not attempts to control another person; they are statements about what someone will and will not allow in their own life or space.

That distinction is the heart of the disagreement. The neighbor appears to view the locked outlet as the cause of his problem, but the chain of events started earlier: he purchased an EV without having reliable charging arranged, then repeatedly depended on someone else’s property despite being told not to.

The locked cover did not remove something he was entitled to use; it removed access he had never been given permission to have.

At the same time, the neighbor relationship adds complexity. Living beside someone means long-term interactions matter, and sometimes the most practical choice is not only being right but also reducing unnecessary hostility.

A brief final message such as “I’m locking the outlet tonight because I need to make sure it isn’t used anymore” would have been considerate, even if it was not required.

Ultimately, the tow bill belongs to the person responsible for maintaining enough charge to operate his vehicle. The homeowner may have handled the timing differently, but the neighbor’s inconvenience came from ignoring a boundary, not from someone refusing to provide an ongoing favor.

The bigger lesson is that small acts of entitlement often become bigger conflicts when people mistake access for permission. A neighbor’s unused resource is still their resource, and a clear “no” does not become a negotiation simply because the alternative is inconvenient.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These Redditors agreed OP warned him enough and owed the neighbor nothing

Illustrious_Leg_2537 − Exactly how many times does his wife think he needs to be told something? He’s presumably an adult, or is she admitting he’s stupid? B.

NetSage − B. This isn't your problem. He could have found a fast charger somewhere to use. They bought an EV without planning. That's on them.

Unless he's paying for electricity it doesn't matter if you're using the outlet.

patty202 − B. Not your responsibility

Embarrassed_Flan_869 − B obviously. You warned him multiple times. Not just that but he saw it was locked and decided to risk it.

Reddoraptor − B, and I cannot believe this is actually true. When he got in the car it would have shown it was dead,

so not only are you not responsible for charging his car at your expense you are also not responsible for him driving off in a car

that would have been displaying a warning you couldn’t miss that it was about to die.

These commenters viewed the unauthorized charging as theft and said he should pay for the electricity

nahkneebee − "You should have given me one final warning for breaking into your house and taking your TV before you installed an alarm and I got arrested. .."

Ridiculous, right? The outlet is yours. YOU are charged for the electricity that goes through it.

The neighbor using it is stealing. Just because you can't touch electricity (I mean.

..you COULD but I'd advise against it) doesn't mean it isn't theft because nothing tangible is missing.

You're footing that bill after you advised multiple times that you did not want him using the outlet.

_ewa − B. He was told not too, and continued to do so.

Icy-Doctor23 − B and send him an invoice for your increased electric bill

Piddy3825 − s__ew that guy. he is a thief. he deserves what happened to him.

he could have gotten an extension cord and plugged into an outlet at his own home. you were clear enough from the first time you told him no.

drivergrrl − B jeez the entitlement

Would you have sent one final warning before locking the outlet?

Or was the neighbor already given enough chances?
