Manager Nearly Kills a College Kid, Gets A Furious Lesson in Safety

Sometimes, the scariest stories aren’t ghost stories. They’re the ones that could happen on any given Tuesday at a perfectly normal job. One Redditor recently shared a story about his dad’s time working in a car factory, a tale that started with a simple request from a friendly-but-dimwitted manager.

The request? For his dad, a young college kid at the time, to crawl inside a jammed industrial trash compactor to fix it. What followed was a masterclass in malicious compliance, a legendary showdown with a union rep, and a lesson a clueless boss would never, ever forget.

This story is a wild ride, and a serious reminder of workplace dangers:

"You Will Work This Dangerous Position Without Training" Leads To "Have Fun Talking To The Union"?

My Dad was visiting us for Christmas and as usual, I got him to share some more stories about his youth

and he shared a time where he used Malicious Compliance to not only shut up one of his bosses and get him into trouble.

Many years ago, back when Dad was a college student, he earned extra money by working in a car manufacturing plant.

The state at the time was a closed shop, which meant you had to join the union in order to work.

One of the rules said union set up at Dad's workplace was that no employee could work certain positions unless they had been trained for it.

This included positions such as forklift operator and trash compactor. This was included in the contract and was a no break rule.

Enter George the manager. Unlike many in this thread, George was actually a nice fellow

but to quote Joseph from It's a Wonderful Life: "He has the IQ of a jackrabbit" and didn't always think things through.

One Saturday afternoon, Dad came into work when George pulled him aside. "I need you to do me a favor, son...

the trash compactor is jammed and I need someone to crawl in and unjam it. You're the smallest of us all so it shouldn't be a problem for you."

Now not only had Dad not been trained for loading the compactor but even he knew crawling in there would be a dumb idea.

"Uh, George, I haven't been trained for this position." George got all flustered and told him "Just do it."

Dad then got an idea for some Malicious Compliance. "I'll do it but is it okay if I ask one of the other guys to spot me and make sure...

George said "That'll be fine, just make sure the job is done." Dad then headed to his union shop leader Kenny.

Like George, Kenny was a decent fellow but was very protective of his workers. Dad told Kenny what had happened and asked him to spot him.

Cue Kenny "turning at least five shades of purple" before storming to George's office.

Dad told me the whole floor went silent as Kenny unloaded on George for trying to make "a poor college kid do something so freaking dangerous"

and that "this will be recorded and written up." Kenny stormed out, leaving a frightened looking George quaking in his steel toed boots.

The compactor ended up getting fixed without someone crawling into it and George always asked if people were trained for positions before asking them to do it.

You can just picture it, can’t you? The deafening silence on the factory floor as a furious union rep lays into a manager who just tried to turn a college kid into human pâté. It’s the kind of story that’s hilarious in hindsight but absolutely terrifying in the moment.

The dad’s quick thinking is truly the stuff of legends. Instead of arguing or refusing, which could have gotten him fired for insubordination, he used the manager’s own carelessness against him. “Sure, I’ll do this life-threatening thing you asked, but can my union rep, the one whose entire job is to prevent this exact scenario, watch me do it?” Brilliant. It’s a perfect example of using the system to protect yourself when the person in charge fails to.

Incompetence Is More Dangerous Than Malice

This story is a powerful reminder that a “nice” boss with a “jackrabbit IQ” can be just as dangerous as a malicious one. George wasn’t trying to hurt anyone; he was just trying to solve a problem quickly, and his complete lack of foresight nearly led to a tragedy.

This is not a freak occurrence. Industrial machinery is incredibly dangerous. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, thousands of workers suffer serious injuries every year from being caught in or compressed by equipment. Many of these incidents happen because of a lack of proper safety procedures, like lockout/tagout, where a machine is fully de-energized before maintenance. It’s a procedure George almost certainly didn’t know or care about.

This is exactly why unions have been so vital to worker safety. They don’t just react to accidents; they build proactive safety protocols right into the employment contract. As one labor relations expert from Cornell University puts it, unions “create a legally-binding system of safety that is not dependent on the whims or competence of any single manager.” Kenny wasn’t just being a good guy; he was enforcing a hard-won contractual right that protected every single person on that floor.

The Reddit community hailed the dad as a genius and Kenny as a hero.

Unions and their fierce protectors were the undisputed heroes of this story.

Forge__Thought - Kenny may well have saved your dad's life. I'm glad people like Kenny are out there.

gimmethelulz - And this is why we need unions.

unkle_FAHRTKNUCKLE - Love "Union Compliance" stories.

TheObstruction - Stuff like this is quite literally why unions were formed, to keep people alive because their employers couldn't be bothered without mass worker revolt.

The sheer stupidity and danger of the manager’s request was not lost on anyone.

Kabc - I worked in a warehouse with a compactor/bailer thing. .. that thing was freaking serious.

UBetcha84 - This story just pisses me off. George is one stupid mother[freaker] and had no business being in a position of leadership.

SinibusUSG - Don't 👏 Enter 👏 Confined 👏 Spaces Especially ones designed to stop being confined spaces and become confined nothings.

slightlyassholic - Send an untrained person to clear a compactor? !? The guy probably didn't have locks and if he did,

he certainly didn't know how to properly secure that device. George sent that guy into a situation that could have easily gotten him killed.

firnien-arya - The fact that the compactor was able to be fixed without needing anyone to crawl under it SHOWS how incompetent the boss guy was.

TillThen96 - OP, I hope you realize that you were only one "George" away from possibly not existing.

And of course, Reddit brought the humor.

B2Rocketfan77 - What a smashing story!

Zoreb1 - You could have role played Star Wars when in the trash compactor.

havereddit - Glad it was George who got crushed rather than your Dad

How to Handle a Dangerous Request at Work

We’ve all had bosses who ask us to do things that feel a bit outside our job description, but what do you do when a request is genuinely unsafe? The dad in this story provides a perfect template.

First, state the facts calmly. “I haven’t been trained to do that” is a powerful and non-confrontational statement. It puts the responsibility back on the manager to provide the proper training and safety equipment.

Second, if they push, find an ally or a witness. Suggesting a “spotter,” especially one who is a safety lead, a union rep, or even just a trusted senior colleague, is a brilliant way to call attention to the situation without outright refusing. It forces the manager to either follow procedure or expose their negligence to others. Remember, your safety is more important than a manager’s convenience. Never let anyone rush you into a situation you haven’t been trained to handle.

In The End…

This dad’s story is a true gem. It’s a perfect blend of wit, danger, and justice. In hindsight, we can laugh at George quaking in his boots, but it’s a chilling reminder that safety rules are often written in blood. Thank goodness for smart kids who know the rules and for union reps like Kenny who are ready to go to war to enforce them.
