MIL Fakes Her Husband’s Death to See Her Son, Then Years Later the Same Tragedy Happens Again

in Social Issues

Family emergencies are usually the moments when people drop everything and rush to be there for the ones they love.

But what happens when someone creates a fake crisis to get attention?

Sometimes, the biggest shock is not the situation itself, but realizing the people involved were willing to go that far.

The original poster (OP) believed she was dealing with a heartbreaking family emergency when her mother-in-law claimed her husband was dying.

She never expected that the truth would be something completely different and that the entire situation had been staged.

Years later, after stepping away from the family, OP found herself remembering a detail that made the whole thing even more unbelievable. Scroll down to see why she decided to cut contact.

Woman discovers her MIL faked her husband’s death to force a reunion

MIL Fakes Her Husband’s Death to See Her Son, Then Years Later the Same Tragedy Happens Again
not the actual photo

'I supported the family the first time FIL died. But only the first?'

No, the title is not wrong. My MIL simulated her husband's death with the

help of one of her granddaughters and her SIL. The reason was that she

wanted to see my SO.

When SO was on the plane she texted me an apology "sorry but there was no

other way to see him" without explaining me that FIL wasn't actually dying.

Nobody did a thing about it. Not Jesus FIL superstar, not SO, actually not even

me (I suppose I was shocked but the truth is that some of my friends knew it

and they surely weren't in shock and still didn't tell me to do something, so I

also suppose in our culture we're used to parents being like this.)

Anyway, time passed, I went NC, and now FIL is dying again but I blocked

them all. And I just realised it's the second time for FIL to die

Edit: someone looked for my post history and left a very mean comment. Idk

if there is a MIL gang here or what, but just for you to know, I'm not posting in

a place that says "OP's feelings come first" to allow this to happen. And

please do not give away diagnosis on the internet

When someone uses fear to force a connection, the deepest wound is often not the event itself, but the loss of trust afterward.

Many people can forgive distance, disagreements, or even family conflict, but it is much harder to rebuild a relationship when someone creates a false reality and expects others to accept it.

For OP, this situation was not simply about a difficult mother-in-law. It was about discovering that a serious emotional moment, one involving the possibility of losing a loved one, had been used as a tool to bring someone back.

The emotional conflict in OP’s story comes from a painful contradiction.

On one side, there is the natural desire to respect family bonds and respond when someone may be suffering.

On the other side, OP experienced what felt like a deliberate manipulation of those same emotions.

The apology message, especially without immediately explaining the truth, appears to have left OP feeling like her feelings and trust were secondary to MIL’s goal.

Over time, this kind of experience can make a person question not only the person who caused the harm, but also everyone who stayed silent afterward.

A different perspective is that OP’s decision to go no contact may not be about anger or revenge.

From the outside, some people may see blocking family during a serious illness as harsh.

However, psychologically, people often create distance when they feel they cannot predict another person’s behavior. When someone repeatedly crosses emotional boundaries, stepping away can become less about punishment and more about restoring a sense of safety and control.

The painful irony is that MIL wanted closeness with her son, but the method she chose may have created the exact opposite result.

This perspective helps explain why OP’s reaction is centered around trust rather than simply the original incident.

A family emergency should create closeness through honesty and care. When fear becomes the method used to bring someone closer, the relationship can become associated with anxiety instead of comfort.

OP is not only remembering a fake crisis; she is remembering the moment she realized her emotional response had been manipulated.

The larger lesson from this story is that family relationships still require respect, even when they involve love and history.

Forgiveness and boundaries can exist separately. A person can understand why someone wanted connection while still recognizing that the way they pursued it caused harm.

Rebuilding any relationship after a breach of trust requires accountability, honesty, and changed behavior, not simply an expectation that family ties should erase the damage.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters focused on the manipulation behind the fake death claim

Polenicus − When SO was on the plane she texted me an apology "sorry but

there was no other way to see him" without explaining me that FIL wasn't

actually dying. The important thing to remember is that this is a lie. She

absolutely could see SO again, but that would involve boundaries and respecting them.

This is the only way to see SO while defeating those boundaries.

muhbackhurt − Sometimes you've got to laugh or feel sad that they have to

resort to lying to even get their adult kid to visit them. How sad. My MIL was

like this too. Feigning health issues so that my partner might actually

message her or call her concerned. He was always furious when he'd find out she was lying.

She did it so much that when she actually got a life threatening diagnosis, he

didn't believe her, hell, no-one in the family believed her until they saw

actual medical records. Imagine your end of life being that sad.

Live-Tomorrow-4865 − This is one of the most twisted, manipulative games

I've ever heard of people playing, and it calls to one's mind "the boy that cried

wolf. " This is evidence of deep dysfunction, which I would want as little to do with as possible.

This group reacted to the absurdity of the situation

soozdreamz − I’m sorry, I know that this is serious, and awful, and F her x

1000, but Jesus FIL Superstar has just had me howling for a good 20 minutes

so thank you, needed a good laugh!

Coollogin − Nobody did a thing about it. Not Jesus FIL superstar, not SO,

actually not even me What do you think you should have "done about it"? You

went no contact. What else was there to do?

Jethrothemutant − The FIL who cried wolf!

These commenters supported OP staying away from the family drama and questioned what OP could realistically have done beyond setting boundaries

beepboopboop88 − I don’t blame you, stay out of the chaos and let your

spouse handle it. They didn’t think about this the last time assuming he’s actually dying this time.

OnBrand2 − OP, what was the comment and where was it posted? Do tell

These commenters criticized the behavior as deeply dysfunctional and struggled to understand the cultural or family dynamics that would justify faking a death

JeanCerise − Which culture is it that fakes deaths to manipulate family members?

LadyCircesCricket − What culture are you talking about? I can’t believe they did that. I would have gone NC too.

A fake death is not a normal family conflict or a simple misunderstanding.

OP was placed in an emotionally devastating situation where her MIL created a crisis, involved multiple relatives, and allowed her son to believe his father was dying just to force contact.

The apology afterward only admitted the manipulation, not the harm caused.

Now that the same family is facing a real health crisis, OP is left carrying the weight of knowing they already used a life-threatening situation as a tool once before.

Do you think OP was right to go no contact, or should family emergencies change the way she handles the situation?

How would you react if someone “cried wolf” with a loved one’s death? Share your thoughts below!
