Woman Kicks Friend Out After She Insults Her Deaf Owner’s Helpful Golden Retriever

Most people agree that dogs are too good for this world. They comfort us, love us, and sometimes teach themselves incredible tricks just to help us out.

A Redditor recently shared a heartwarming story about her Golden Retriever, Nala. This smart pup figured out how to be ears for her Deaf owner completely on her own. The bond they share is practical and adorable. But instead of swooning, a guest decided to label this partnership as “servitude.”

The visit ended abruptly. A heartwarming display of canine intelligence turned into a friendship-ending argument.

The internet has some strong feelings about this story:

Woman Kicks Friend Out After She Insults Her Deaf Owner's Helpful Golden Retriever
Not the actual photo

AITA for kicking my friend out after she said I was treating my dog like a "servant"?

I F27 recently moved into my new house. I have a golden retriever named Nala and she is the sweetest.

I'm Deaf, too. That bit is important. When I moved in, I had a bit of trouble having flashing light doorbells put in and there was a while I had...

My friends and family know to give me a call when they drop by instead of ringing the doorbell but unfortunately I have missed many a package this way.

For some reason, Nala caught onto this. At one point she began letting me know when someone was at the door. She'd do this in multiple ways.

If I was in the living room where I can see the front door, she'd go and paw at the door, or if I was upstairs she'd come and gently...

to let me know someone's there. It took me a while to catch on to what she was trying to do, though. And now, even though I have my doorbell

installed she still does it. I did not teach her how to do any of this. She just decided to help me out lol. I brought a friend over for...

This is the first time she's met Nala as well. The first thing she comments on is how I named her Nala, because apparently everyone

and their grandma names their golden Nala. Lion King was my favorite movie growing up, sue me. Then I showed her a video of Nala pawing at the door

because it got a bit awkward after that comment. It's usually a great ice breaker. She laughed and thought it was cute. I showed her another one.

She asked me why Nala was doing that and I explained. She doesn't say anything for a minute and then goes "So, she's basically your servant? Is she just here...

I was thoroughly done with her judgmental ass by that point and I just asked her to leave. She left, but she did message me afterwards

saying I was rude as f__k kicking her out after she travelled all the way to see me, and that how else was she supposed to think of my dog...

It is genuinely baffling how someone could turn a sweet story into a human rights violation complaint. This friend walked into a new home, insulted the dog’s name immediately, and then accused the host of exploiting an animal. That is a lot of negativity to bring to a housewarming.

The dog, Nala, sounds like an absolute genius. Most of us can barely get our pets to stop eating trash. This dog saw a gap in her owner’s awareness and filled it with love. It is not servitude. It is partnership. The friend’s reaction says way more about her own unhappy worldview than it does about the dog’s life.

Expert Opinion

The friend’s reaction reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of canine psychology. She viewed the dog’s actions through a human lens. Humans often resent unpaid labor. Dogs generally crave it.

Golden Retrievers fall into the “Sporting Group” of dog breeds. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), these dogs were bred to work alongside hunters. They have high energy and an innate desire to please their handlers. A Golden Retriever without a job often becomes bored and destructive. Nala created her own job. She found a way to channel her energy that resulted in praise and interaction with her human.

Canine behaviorists call this “enrichment.” Dr. Stanley Coren, a renowned expert on dog intelligence, notes that working breeds are happiest when they have tasks to complete. This stimulates their brains. Nala isn’t suffering. She is likely getting a dopamine hit every time she successfully alerts her owner.

There is also a layer of ableism in the friend’s comment. The OP is Deaf. The dog is performing a task that functions similarly to a Service Dog. Criticizing a tool or method that aids a disabled person is discriminatory. It minimizes the challenges the OP faces. The friend essentially shamed the OP for having an accessible home environment.

This conflict highlights the importance of context. The friend saw a video and made a snap judgment. She ignored the love and care evident in the relationship. Real emotional intelligence involves asking questions before making accusations. She could have asked, “How did you train her to do that?” Instead, she chose to be insulting.

Community Opinions

Netizens were quick to point out that Golden Retrievers are literally working dogs who love having a purpose.

LunetThorsdottir − NTA, your friend is so wrong it's funny. Retrievers were created to bring things to their humans, that's what retriever means.

Since Nola can't pick up the person at your door and bring them to you, she opted for second best option - notifying you and letting you do the actual...

Pat Nola on the head from me and explain to your friend that dogs love to be useful.

Pepper-90210 − NTA. Nala sounds like a wonderful dog (so smart! ) and you sound like an excellent dog parent.

Clearly your friend doesn’t know anything about dogs, particularly golden retrievers, who thrive on having “jobs” to do.

Good for you for asking your friend to leave after her rude and judgmental comments.

angelaheidt − NTA. Dogs love jobs and it's not like you're abusing your dog. Sounds like she loves to be helpful!

Ok-Astronaut-2837 − NTA. A lot of dogs actually love working, which is why they're called working dogs. Also damn

has she never heard of a service dog? You can decide how you want to move forward with the friendship but I wouldn't.

Some users were baffled by the friend’s logic, noting that dogs naturally want to help their owners out of love.

OutrageousLuck4231 − NTA. How else is she supposed to think? how about think that this dog is more than a dog. Somehow this dog realized that

it's owner had a disability and found a way to help with that. Out of LOVE. This is actually one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.

Your friend trying to turn it into some sort of animal exploitation story is twisted and awful. It speaks volumes

that she would immediately go there as opposed to seeing this sweet animal as anything other than a caring friend. Actually kind of gross.

Pesec1 − NTA. Yeah, she is a judgmental a__hole. Dogs love interacting with their owners. Realizing that her actions are actually useful to you

and make you happy makes your dog happy. Which is why Nala keeps doing it. Dogs can enjoy things that we consider repetitive

and mind-numbing. My neighbor has a dog that can play catch for literally hours. If its human tries to stop, she will place the ball in his hand.

If human still refuses to throw, she looks for another human.

bigcup321 − It's hard to believe that she could so quickly assume that because she sees one behavior of your dog that is the entire only reason you have the...

I can't get my head around it. Even if you had deliberately trained your dog to help you in that way, that wouldn't be bad.

Does she think service dogs for the blind are being abused and that their owners have no relationship with their dogs outside of that service?

INFO: When you say "I was thoroughly done with her judgmental ass by that point and I just asked her to leave," it sounds like what you would say

after someone had been judgmental about a lot of things up to that point, but the way you tell the story it's as if she said one weird judgmental thing...

Was she judgmental about anything else? 2. As weird as her question was, did you at any point try to answer it?

Others just couldn’t resist cracking a joke about the absurdity of the “servant” comment.

DrOogieBoogie42 − NTA. Maybe you should get Nala to show your friend the door.

swagdaddio69 − INFO: Are you paying the dog a living wage?

JuuliusCaesar69 − Obviously NTA. Your golden sounds like a sweet baby and will be a much better friend to you than this person!

If someone was rude to my dog I’d tell them off too. Also, I’m in a 55k+ member golden retriever group and can’t remember ever seeing one named Nala. Not...

This story is a prime example of how negativity can ruin a beautiful moment. The bond between the OP and Nala is something special. The dog identified a need and filled it, proving just how emotionally intelligent animals can be. The friend, unfortunately, showed a lack of that same intelligence.

Was kicking her out too extreme, or was it the only way to protect the peace of the home? How would you react if someone insulted your pet’s loyalty?
