MIL Ignores Baby Rules After NICU Twins Arrive, So Parents Finally Take Away Her Privileges

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

After a difficult pregnancy journey and a month-long NICU stay, OP and her husband were understandably cautious about protecting their premature newborn twins.

They created clear boundaries around visitors, holding, and exposure while their babies built up their immune systems.

Despite knowing those boundaries, OP’s MIL repeatedly pushed against them.

After already causing issues with the baby shower, she broke their trust again by secretly inviting additional people over while babysitting the twins.

Now, with Thanksgiving approaching, OP is wondering whether refusing another family gathering is a reasonable safety decision or an emotional reaction.

New mother struggles with trust after her MIL ignores boundaries involving their premature twins

'MIL cannot be trusted around newborns any longer?'

I posted a few months ago regarding the MIL who invited a bunch of her

friends to our baby shower despite us saying not to and made her un-invite them.

Since then we welcomed our twins 3 months ago. They were born at 34

weeks and had a month long NICU stay. When they came home, we did not

allow anyone to hold them until their 2 month vaccinations. MIL would cry

and even talk to her therapist about not being allowed to hold them 🙄 We

are still very particular about who sees and holds the babies and MIL knew this.

So, we decided to have a date night finally and MIL asks if they can go to

her house. We said that was fine and dropped them off. As we get there,

she said a family member was going to come over to help. We didn’t like

the last minute notice but said that was fine because two are a handful.

Upon picking them up, we find she had invited more people than she told

us, some of her friends and she tried hiding it but we came to pick them up sooner than she anticipated and saw them leaving.

We are both pissed off about the situation and DH put her on notice that if

this happens ever again she will no longer get to watch them. With

Thanksgiving coming I am now backtracking and thinking we will not take

the babies out to any gathering. Part of this is honestly me being spiteful

but also because I don’t trust any of their side to not show up sick. I know

when we cancel she’s going to have a meltdown but I feel at this point they cannot be trusted and we have no other choice.

EDIT: I am loving all these responses and in total agreement that MIL has

lost all privileges of watching the babies. DH seems to be under the

impression that since we did not blatantly specify not to invite people that

maybe there should be one more trial run but I don’t trust the b****.

Trust is not built through promises; it is built through consistent respect for boundaries, especially when someone is vulnerable.

For new parents, few experiences are more emotionally intense than bringing a baby home after a difficult beginning.

The OP was not simply being “overprotective.”

She was trying to protect two premature infants who had already spent their first weeks of life in the NICU, while relying on others to respect the rules that helped them feel safe.

The core conflict in this story is not really about one unexpected visit or a few extra guests.

It is about a repeated pattern where the OP’s MIL appears to prioritize her own emotional desires over the parents’ decisions.

The baby shower incident, the frustration about not holding the twins, and the secret invitation of additional people all point toward the same issue: MIL seems to view boundaries as obstacles to negotiate rather than decisions to respect.

Meanwhile, the OP and her husband are trying to recover from a stressful birth experience and establish control over their new family dynamic.

A different perspective is that MIL’s actions may come from excitement and a desire to feel involved rather than intentional cruelty.

Some grandparents struggle with the transition from being the central figure in their own family to becoming a supporting role in their adult child’s family.

However, good intentions do not erase the impact of someone’s choices. Wanting to help does not give someone permission to secretly change the rules.

This perspective is important because the OP’s decision is not only about punishment.

After a baby has been through a complicated medical start, parents often need a strong sense of control over their environment.

When someone knowingly withholds information about visitors, it creates a reasonable concern that future rules may also be ignored.

The issue is no longer whether MIL agrees with the boundaries; it is whether she can be trusted to follow them when the parents are not present.

At the same time, completely cutting off family contact may not be the only option.

A healthier middle ground could involve changing the level of access MIL has earned.

Someone who repeatedly ignores instructions may still have a relationship with the children, but perhaps only during supervised visits until trust is rebuilt.

The larger lesson is that grandparents do not earn access through their title alone.

They earn it through reliability, respect, and understanding that the parents, not extended family, make the decisions.

In this situation, protecting the twins’ well-being and the parents’ peace is not about being difficult.

It is about recognizing that trust must be demonstrated before it can be restored.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters believed MIL intentionally hid the gathering

opine704 − Did you also tell her not to run with scissors? FFS She KNEW she

was being shady. She KNEW you would not agree. That's why she had her

people leave before your expected return time. The only reason you know

is because you came back early. She would never have told you.

And having gotten away with it once, she would have repeated the

scenario again and again. You should not go to any group gatherings. Your

twins spent 1/3 of their lives in the hospital. Depending on where you are. ..

Covid is going around, flu, RSV, measles (yes measles). Do you expect MIL

to morph into a reasonable, respectful, person or to continue being herself?

Based on her previous actions. ... Would she tell you if she were sick? Would

she tell you that 3 other couples were coming? Would she tell you that one

of those couples flew into town? Would she tell you another couple was sick?

HoneyWyne − She knew what she was doing. It was a great big FU from her

to you. You know it. She knows it. The whole family and friends group

knows it. Now it's just down to ho you and your husband respond.

Grapefruitloaf − MIL KNEW she overstepped as she wanted the guests to

leave before you got home. It's very common to keep NICU babies home

over the holidays their first year. Keep your babies assembled and healthy. Hubby needs to back you up ALWAYS.

rynoki − This was calculated. She knew exactly what she was doing.

This group argued that trust was already broken and consequences should happen immediately rather than waiting for another incident

Baudica − Why would it have to happen again, for there to be any

consequences? You'd basically telling her to try again, and hide it better,

this time. Just don't accept her watching your babies. Don't even argue

about it. 'When will they be coming over? ' 'WE will be. . ' 'When can I have

the babies' 'That won't be necessary. But thanks!

' Just play dumb, and don't accept childcare from her again. Saves you the

arguing and frustration. If there's no official 'you will not be trusted with

our kids', she doesn't have an in to argue, either.

ChampionshipSad1586 − When people show you who they are, believe them … the first time

buckeye-person − You don't make rules/boundaries for people who have

the privilege of watching your children to see if they will behave. You do it

to keep your babies safe. She does not get a second chance. Hubby needs

to understand why the rules/guidelines exist. She did not use common sense so can not be trusted.

These users supported removing MIL’s babysitting privileges

Neither-Dentist-7899 − DH needs to get realistic. You shouldn’t have to

cover every possible situation in order to ensure your children are safely

cared for. That’s absurd. Your MIL knew what she was doing. She clearly

invited everyone over to have her “Grandma Moment” and wanted to hide

it from you. My suggestion is to go nuclear. MIL lost Thanksgiving. No more watching kids alone.

DH needs to be direct: “Mom, you were dishonest with us about watching

the twins. So, we will not be visiting for X weeks/months. That means you

will not be a part of our Thanksgiving celebrations this year. ”

West_Criticism_9214 − You probably didn’t tell her not to take them to the

zoo and dangle them over the tiger exhibit, but you’d be horrified if she had done so.

The fact that she didn’t tell you her friends were coming and tried to sneak

them out the door before you came home indicates that she knows you

wouldn’t have liked it, but went and did that anyway. Granny should lose

her babysitting privileges at least until the babies can speak well enough to

tell you everything that happens in her care.

As another poster suggested, invest in good carriers and have you and your

husband both baby wear at gatherings, especially when she’s around.

that_mom_friend − I’d probably mention that since she was so

o__rwhelmed by the workload of watching both babies that she had to call

in extra people to help, that she’s clearly not in a position to safely watch

them in the future. For the babies safety, you’ll be hiring a different caregiver.

She’ll either have to agree that she isn’t able to watch them without help

and needed 6 friends to help, or admit that she is perfectly able but lied

about inviting friends over and blatantly disregarded your rule about not

exposing the babies to extra people. Either way, she doesn’t get to babysit again. Stay home.

Your kids are medically fragile, fresh out of the NICU, and it’s flu season. The fact that she can’t be trusted is secondary.

After the NICU stay and months of strict precautions, OP’s biggest concern was never about being controlling, it was about trust.

MIL was given the opportunity to care for the twins under clear expectations, but chose to hide extra visitors instead.

Do you think OP is justified in limiting MIL’s access after another broken boundary, or should there have been more specific rules communicated beforehand?

How many chances should someone get when they repeatedly ignore a parent’s wishes? Share your thoughts below!
