Pregnant Bride’s Cousin Removed Her From Wedding Party, Then Seated Her at the “Random” Table

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Weddings are supposed to bring people together, but sometimes the planning process reveals feelings and attitudes that were hidden beneath the surface.

A celebration that should be about love can quickly become uncomfortable when someone feels excluded or disrespected by the people closest to them.

OP was excited to support her cousin’s wedding, even agreeing to be part of the bridal party and lend a vintage car for the special day.

However, as the months passed, she started noticing decisions that made her feel pushed aside, including comments about her pregnancy, her husband’s culture, and where they would be seated.

Now, with the wedding approaching, OP is wondering whether stepping away from the event is justified or if she is creating unnecessary family drama. Scroll down to see what Reddit had to say.

'AITA for cancelling my cousin's car for her wedding and not attending, after I already RSVPD?'

Hi there fellow Petty Potatoes!

Like all of you, I absolutely love lurking and laughing at all the wedding

drama here, but today I really need your opinion on a situation I find myself

in. It's a bit long so please bare with me.

I (30F) have been married for a year to the most amazing man I have ever

met, who also happens to be Indian, I am white. This is important for later.

We are currently expecting our first baby, and I will be just over 8 months

along on her wedding day. This is also important for later.

I have a cousin (40F), who I've had a fairly rocky relationship with, although

we were always pretty close. Her wedding is coming up in September. Last

year November when she first got engaged, she asked me to be one of her

bridesmaids and I said yes. At this time I was still a fairly newly wed, but me

and hubby were planning to start trying to grow our family by the

beginning of this year. I communicated this to her, as I felt it only right she

knows one of her bridesmaids might be pregnant at the wedding. This was

no problem for her. She also asked me if she could borrow a very vintage

car that my hubby owns as her wedding car, as her theme would be 1920s.

Me and hubby agreed.

Fast forward to March, basically no progress was made with the wedding

planning, and most of everything was still ideas. I'm in the first trimester

and my pregnancy is treating me rough to say the least. My cousin then

decides on bridesmaid dresses, and they are all tight, really tight and short.

I politely remind her I will be heavily pregnant and they might not fit me, to

which she just shrugs me off. I continue helping with the planning and

going to venues and shops with her to get things ready. In May I am still

having a rough time with my pregnancy and she decides on the final

dresses for the bridesmaids, still tight and revealing. I decide the best way

forward is pulling out as a bridesmaid as I'm very uncomfortable with the

choice and feel everyone should have the wedding they dream of. I go over

to her house for a visit to tell her of my plan to pull out, but that I would

still help wherever I can whenever she needs it. Only for her to inform me

she has already dropped me as a bridesmaid when I got pregnant as it's

inappropriate in my husband's culture for me to be a bridesmaid while

pregnant. No such rule exists, and she never in all the months of planning

told me that I was no longer a bridesmaid. I decide to just leave it, as I did

want to pull out anyway.

I continue helping her with everything she needs, going to her dress

fittings with her, etc. One day when we were driving from a dress fitting

she mentions that even though some people in the family don't like her

husband, at least he's white. I also just let this slide, as honestly I felt like it

was a gut punch and I had no words. Obviously when I shared this

statement with my husband to ask what his thoughts are, he was quite

upset and of the opinion that it was a pointed remark.

A while after this my cousin informs me that I would be expected to do a

choreographed dance with the wedding party. I try to politely decline,

because honestly I'll be so so large at the wedding and would rather not.

She shrugs this off also and just tells me it's fine I can definitely do it. I

leave it there.

Fast forward to last Friday, after everything continued as usual, I give my

cousin a call to ask her how planning is going. She tells me that she just

finished her seating arrangements and wants to run it by my. So she tells

me where everyone will be seated, she's doing tables for aunts and uncles,

cousins, elderly, friends, friends, for our and her husband's families

respectively. Then there is a "random" table, at this table will be seated, 2

of her work friends and their partners, her nanny, me and hubby. There is

only one problem, everyone aside from me at this table happen to be not

white. Yes all the people of colour present at this wedding happen to be at

this table. The random table. Her friends don't get to sit with her white

friends, we don't get to sit by the cousin's table. We have the "random"

table.. My flabbers are gasted!

Am I overreacting and will I be the a__hole if hubby and I don't go to the

wedding, and don't give her our car for pretty photo's?

Sometimes the most painful moments in family relationships are not caused by one huge event, but by a series of small choices that slowly make someone feel unwanted.

When people repeatedly feel overlooked, excluded, or treated differently, the emotional impact can become much bigger than the individual incidents themselves.

In this situation, the OP was not only reacting to a seating arrangement or a bridesmaid role. She was processing a pattern.

She had offered support during her cousin’s wedding planning, even while dealing with a difficult pregnancy, and tried to be understanding when plans changed.

However, being quietly removed from the bridal party, having her pregnancy and husband’s culture used as an explanation without evidence, hearing a comment praising whiteness, and then being placed at a table where all people of color were grouped together created a feeling of being separated rather than celebrated.

At the same time, there is another perspective worth considering. Weddings often involve complicated logistics, family tensions, and difficult seating decisions.

A single table arrangement does not always prove intentional discrimination.

It is possible that the cousin was trying to balance personalities, friendships, or family expectations without realizing how the arrangement appeared.

However, intent does not erase impact. When someone repeatedly feels like they are being treated as “different,” those feelings deserve attention.

This perspective helps explain why the seating chart affected the OP so strongly.

The issue was not simply where she sat during a reception. It represented a larger concern: whether she and her husband were being fully welcomed into the family celebration.

After marrying someone from a different cultural background, comments that highlight race can carry a heavier emotional impact because they touch on acceptance, respect, and belonging.

However, the situation also shows why assumptions should be handled carefully.

The cousin’s actions may reflect bias, but they may also reflect thoughtlessness rather than deliberate cruelty.

Either way, the OP does not have to ignore her own discomfort just to avoid creating conflict.

Choosing whether to attend the wedding or lend the vintage car is ultimately about boundaries, not punishment.

A gift or favor should come from a place of happiness, not obligation or feeling used.

If the OP no longer feels valued or respected, it is reasonable to reconsider how involved she wants to be.

Family relationships can survive disagreements, but they usually cannot thrive when one person constantly feels they must minimize their own hurt to keep the peace.

Sometimes stepping back is not about creating drama; it is about recognizing when respect needs to come before tradition.

Check out how the community responded:

These commenters supported OP refusing to attend the wedding or lend the car

GodivaPlaistow − Don’t go and definitely don’t let her use your husband’s

nice car. Tell her, because you have dignity and integrity even if she doesn’t,

then block her and don’t give her another thought. Live your lives in health and happiness.

Gran1998 − NTA! I’d call her on her BS, (bigotry) tell her you’re not coming

and the car is no longer available. She can rent one from a white guy. I’m

sorry she’s being such an awful human. I’d also go NC with her and keep

your baby safe from that rudeness. Congratulations on your baby

Oddly-Appeased − Oh hell no! ! Your cousin is clearly a r__ist. Personally I’d

cut all contact with her, definitely do not let her use anything of yours

especially the car. NTA and never question what your feelings are telling you.

These commenters encouraged OP to confront the cousin directly

smlpkg1966 − Oh hell no! The response to her saying the family doesn’t like

her husband but at least he is white would have been “they don’t like my

husband because THEY are r__ist assholes, they don’t like your husband

because HE is an a__hole. ” Just tell her you changed your mind and won’t be attending.

If she asks why tell her “so I don’t mess up your POC table”. Without you it

will be obvious this is an “other” table. And “my husband will not loan his

car to racists so you need to figure that out also”. The family will side with

her because they are r__ist but you need to go NC with them anyway.

Ginger630 − NTA for not going and cancelling the car. But YTA to yourself

for continuing to help her and letting her r__ist comment slide. Grow a

backbone and tell her off! I honestly would be a petty B and ghost her. Just

block her from your phone.

If she ever does get a hold of you and is upset about the car, tell her you

decided months ago that you weren’t going to let her borrow the car. You

told her the same way she told you months later that you weren’t a

bridesmaid. ” Go NC with her and anyone on her side.

These commenters believed the cousin’s actions showed prejudice and felt OP should not participate in an event

Vivid-Farm6291 − Seems she is too r__ist for your car, it has standards. NTA

Aware-Locksmith-7313 − NTA - Whoa … Time to regast your flabbers .

While the “random table of color” may be the finest at this event, it

appears that wasn’t the spirit in which it was orchestrated. Given your

difficult pregnancy and the way you were “demoted” as a bridesmaid

without even being told , I’d withdraw altogether from participation in this

farce, and that goes for your vintage car as well.

NTA

JRAWestCoast − Pull the plug on the whole thing, car and all. You cannot

support the actions of a r__ist/bigot. Take that vintage car, and you and

your husband have a great time instead of being segregated to the

"random table. " She doesn't give a rat's 🐀 about your feelings. Kiss it

g'bye. You have dignity. Edit: clarification

These commenters felt OP was being used for wedding assistance and resources while not being genuinely respected as family

bookworm-1960 − NTA Your blatantly bigoted cousin never really intended

for you to be a bridesmaid. She has been using you to do all the work for

her wedding and to use your husband's car. That's why she didn't worry

about the dress. Don't reach out to her anymore, don't go to the wedding,

don't let her use the car.

mayhembang − You can always change your mind. Your cousin is r__ist AF

and does not deserve to be treated with any kindness or respect. She

expects you to do the work, wants your husband's vintage car but then

turns around and treats you and your husband like crap.

I would tell her to find one of her white friends to provide her with her

vintage car and those same friends to do the work. You were stupid

enough to continue helping her out after finding out she had already

removed you. You were not a cousin or family but a help at that point. Grow a spine.

Nolachocklate − She literally created a “colored” section at her wedding!

F__k her, don’t go and tell her to find another ride.

Traditional_Onion461 − Not petty at all and NTA. She sounds very r__ist

imo and why go to a event to be othered. I am actually really offended on

your behalf. And have the car develop a problem where it can’t be used to

save any backlash cause you don’t need the stress of flying monkeys while you are pregnant

After months of overlooked comments, uncomfortable situations, and feeling increasingly excluded, the OP is left questioning whether this wedding invitation is worth attending at all.

From the bridesmaid dress issue to the “random” table placement, many readers would likely wonder if these were isolated choices or part of a bigger pattern.

Do you think the OP is justified in skipping the wedding and keeping her husband’s vintage car at home, or should family ties come first despite everything that happened? Share your thoughts below!
