MIL Secretly Books the Same Vacation, Then Calls the Couple Selfish When They Change Trips Without Telling Her

Sharing vacation details with family usually feels harmless.

Most people assume relatives will simply wish them a good trip, not use that information to create an overlapping itinerary without an invitation.

That assumption backfired for one couple after they discovered the husband’s mother booking the same resort during the same dates as their upcoming vacation.

She explained that she and her husband thought it would be a great opportunity for everyone to travel together, even though nobody had asked to join.

The couple pushed back, but MIL framed their reaction as rejection while FIL insisted they could travel wherever they wanted.

Fortunately, a travel agent helped the pair change course before cancellation penalties kicked in.

Keep reading to see why their new secret destination only made the family drama worse.

A couple secretly changes vacation plans after the husband’s parents book the exact same trip without being invited

'MIL tried to make our vacation a family vacation. Now she’s mad we cancelled ours?'

DH and I have been saving to go on a much needed vacation and finally

booked it for next month. We were so excited. We shared the basic info

about it (location/resort & dates) with our immediate family and started

looking into excursions and tours. Everything was perfect.

On Sunday, just before family dinner, my SIL and I caught MIL on Expedia

with credit card in hand booking a trip to the same resort at the same time

we would be there. We told DH and he confronted his mother. She said it

looked like fun and she wanted to go there too. She said her and my FIL

discussed it and thought it would be a great idea to book the same

vacation for themselves and my SIL and BIL so that we can “all have a well

deserved vacation”. SIL and DH immediately shut it down saying that they

were not invited and cannot just invite themselves. That they are intruding

on our plans. Then cue the waterworks and victimization from MIL of how

we don’t want her around. FIL yelled at us for being disrespectful and

hurting her feelings and said that “you don’t control where and when we

go somewhere. So deal with it”.

SIL confirmed to me that same night that they did in fact book the

vacation, just without my SIL and BIL because they refused to go. SIL, the

nicest person she is, connected us with her friend who is a travel agent. The

TA was able to find us a cruise that goes to the same location and a few

others with a good last minute deal and was less than the original trip.

Thankfully, we were able to get a refund on the resort and get flight

credits for the flight since the cancellation penalty period hasn’t started yet.

On Thursday, we saw his parents at our niece’s kindergarten graduation.

MIL came to us and tried to get us to book excursions with them. DH told

her that unfortunately, we won’t be there anymore and are going to

another undisclosed vacation without them with smug look. MIL called us

selfish and they both keeps calling us and SIL trying to get information she

won’t be getting. She’s been making passive aggressive posts on Facebook

and telling everyone how selfish we are.

Sometimes the conflict is not about a destination at all. It is about whether two adults are allowed to have experiences that belong only to them.

This couple had saved for a vacation, chosen the resort, planned excursions, and shared the details with family because they were excited.

Discovering that the MIL was actively booking the same resort for the same dates understandably changed the emotional meaning of the trip.

What had felt private and restorative suddenly became another family event they had never agreed to host.

The core emotional dynamic is boundary violation disguised as enthusiasm.

The MIL framed the plan as everyone having a “well deserved vacation,” which sounds generous on the surface.

But the couple had never invited anyone. Once both adult children clearly said the idea was intrusive, the response shifted to tears, accusations, and the claim that nobody could control where the parents traveled.

Technically, that is true. The parents can book any resort they want. The couple can also decide they no longer want to vacation there.

There is a fresher perspective here: changing the vacation was not really about “winning.” It was a way to reclaim autonomy without forcing anyone else to cancel.

Instead of fighting over who had the right to be at the resort, the couple quietly removed themselves from the conflict and chose a cruise.

That is often what healthy boundaries look like in practice, not controlling another person, but controlling one’s own participation.

The couple never told the MIL she was forbidden from traveling. They simply stopped making their own vacation available for takeover.

Her subsequent attempts to get the new itinerary, along with the passive-aggressive posts, suggest that the real issue may have been less about the resort and more about losing access to their plans.

The healthiest next step is probably to keep future travel details private until after the fact.

Dates, hotels, excursions, and booking information do not need to become family knowledge simply because relatives ask.

A vacation should offer relief from everyday obligations.

If secrecy is what protects that rest, then less information may be the most peaceful boundary of all.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors loved turning FIL’s “deal with it” line back on the intrusive in-laws

Glint_Bladesong − Well played. Totally sucks to be put in that situation, but

you got out of it well. Perhaps a bottle of wine for your sil, she's earnt it.

You understand of course that you will be the "baddie" from here on out

don't you? You have "ruined" mils well deserved vacation, you monster.

Do think about that occasionally while sipping cocktails on the deck of your

cruise ship 😂 Does she have a habit of inserting herself into your activities,

or is this more recent behaviour?

Icy-Doctor23 − DH should remind his parents “you don’t control where and

when we go somewhere. So deal with it“

LeoRose33 − Throw it back to them.   You’re allowed to change vacation

plans. Tell them they don’t control where and when you go, and they can deal with it

WA_State_Buckeye − You sure did take FIL up and "deal with it" correctly!

Congrats! Good to know you are rewarding/thanking SIL with the spa day! She's a good egg!

Candid-Quail-9927 − Well your FIL is right , you cannot control where and

when they go to places. Guess what, it works both ways. Sucks to be them.

This group said inviting yourself onto another couple’s vacation is wildly entitled and controlling

Laquila − Nothing riles me more than people crashing other people's

vacations. I cherish our vacations. We have wonderful memories of the

various trips we've taken over the years. So the thought of having some

busybody decide they were joining us would have me raging. cue the

waterworks and victimization from MIL of how we don’t want her around. I mean, yeah. You don't want her around.

There's nothing wrong with that. You're a married couple who want a

couple's vacation together. But self-absorbed asses like your MIL couldn't

fathom that you'd not be giddy with glee at the idea of you being attached to her hips the whole time.

With her wanting to book excursions with you, it sounds like you wouldn't

have had a second of your vacation without them up in your business. She

probably won't have as good a time on her vacation, now that you're not

there to control. That's what it's mainly about - control.

Her, acting like the Mommy, and you all the Kiddies, doing everything

together as if you were 6 years old. And you'd be enduring that misery

while paying thousands of dollars of your hard-earned money too. Good for

you for shutting her out and down. Have a great trip!

Moist-Succotash-3107 − I am cackling! You should give SIL a big ass hug and a GNO.

Fluid-Set-2674 − JFC. Who invites themselves on someone else's vacation? !

Glad you are giving your SIL that spa day. (And glad you escaped. )

These commenters recommended putting MIL and FIL on a strict information diet for all future plans

MT_Snowflake − You and your spouse might consider putting MIL and FIL

on an information diet indefinitely, along with anyone/everyone who might

possibly spill your information. MIL sounds like the type that would call

everyone until she got the answer she wants.

reallynah75 − No, MIL and FIL aren't mad that you cancelled your trip. They

are mad because you, SO and SIL thwarted them usurping your vacation

and completely take over. You rebooked your vacation to better suit your

little family's needs. MIL is passive/aggressively posting about how selfish people are.

I would be a petty potato and start passive/aggressively posting about how

selfish and entitled some people are. And your FIL was right about one

thing. You can't stop them from taking trips to wherever they want to take

trips to. However, that doesn't mean you have to follow along with them.

Now you know not to discuss holiday, vacation, special occasion, birthday and party plans around them. Updateme

Pipsqueek409 − "FIL yelled at us for being disrespectful and hurting her

feelings and said that “you don’t control where and when we go

somewhere. So deal with it” True that you don't control where & when they

go somewhere and now they've learned the same true lesson about you.

You guys canceling and going somewhere else and cutting their vacation

i__asion off at the knees is just glorious! MIL can cry selfish all she wants

but now she and FIL will have to "deal with it" and that's what they get for

FAFO. They've earned a permanent information diet on all your travel plans from here on out.

Hope you and your family have a fantastic time! BTW your SIL is an absolute

doll for busting MIL in the act, warning you about her shenanigans and

hooking you up with her TA to reverse the damage.

What was supposed to be a private getaway turned into a boundary test the moment MIL quietly booked the exact same resort and dates without being invited.

Rather than spend their long-awaited vacation managing family tension, the couple changed plans and kept the new destination private.

That may look dramatic to some relatives, but it also protected the trip they had worked hard to enjoy.

Do you think switching vacations was justified, or should they have simply ignored the in-laws at the resort? How would you handle family members who invite themselves along?
