Mom Allegedly Calls Police on College Son After He Refuses Her Thanksgiving Demand

Family pressure can be frustrating enough when relatives refuse to respect a simple “no.” But when someone is determined to control your choices from hundreds of miles away, things can escalate far beyond awkward phone calls and guilt trips.

College is supposed to be a chance to build independence, yet some parents have a hard time accepting that their children are no longer under their authority.

The original poster (OP) attends college in Arizona and has kept very limited contact with his mother and stepfather back in Maine. When his mom demanded that he return home for Thanksgiving and pose for family photos, OP refused and planned to spend the holiday peacefully on campus.

She did not take the rejection well. What began with calls to the university soon turned into something OP could never have expected. Keep reading to see just how far the situation went.

A college student faces armed police after his mother makes a shocking false report to force him home

Mom Allegedly Calls Police on College Son After He Refuses Her Thanksgiving Demand
not the actual photo

'Cops knock down my dorm door because Nmom lied to get me back'

I attend college in Arizona, Nmom and Estepdad live in Maine. I’ve gone VLC with them over the three years I’ve been in school.

The summers I’ve managed to get a job or internship to keep me out here.

Four months ago Nmom sent me a email telling me I was coming to Thanksgiving,

she wanted the family together and had a photographer coming to take photos.

So we could fake being a happy family for a few hours.

I told her I would not be coming because of my job on campus. She then called the school who told her that

a) Im over 18 therefore they can’t tell her anything

b) when she threatened to pull me out the awesome lady at the registers told her “good luck, he’s on a full scholarship, and pays for everything himself”

When she realized she couldn’t lie to the school she had E dad call me to beg me to come.

This guy stood by since I was 12 and watched my mom beat me, degrade me, lie about me and did nothing.

F__k him, I ignore his calls, she then called my bio dad who laughed at her and hung up.

We have our issues but he’s genuinely a good guy whose dealt with mental health issues his entire life.

So thanksgiving I woke up (school was closed that day so I didn’t actually have to work) went to the gym, enjoyed a leisurely breakfast at my favorite cafe.

I came home and was getting ready to throw laundry in the washer and make myself chicken and noodles in my crockpot when my door was pretty much knocked down.

Campus cops and outside cops, guess whose mom called and said her son told his 13 year old sister

(I don’t talk to my siblings because their easily swayed by Nmom) that he was going to bomb the school.

Yeah so after a trip to the campus police building, them searching my room and car and finding nothing ,

my RA and two floor mates defending me and me showing emails of my mom threatening me I’d be sorry for not coming to thanksgiving they apologized,

I was allowed to go back to my dorm and the RA and I managed to put the door back on.

Then my grandma calls guess who was arrested for making a false police report? If you guessed my Nmom you’d be right.

One of the hardest parts of becoming independent is discovering that distance does not always create safety. For someone raised in a controlling or abusive household, leaving home may feel like finally reaching solid ground.

Yet when a parent refuses to recognize that separation, an ordinary boundary can suddenly become a battleground. In this story, the OP was not simply refusing a Thanksgiving invitation. He was protecting an independence he had spent years building.

Emotionally, the conflict seems to center on control rather than a missed family gathering. The OP had become financially independent, earned a full scholarship, stayed in Arizona, and reduced contact with his mother. Each of those choices removed another lever she could potentially pull.

When persuasion failed, the situation allegedly escalated from demands, to pressure through other relatives, and finally to a false accusation serious enough to bring police to his dorm. The frightening part is how quickly a private family conflict became a threat to his education, reputation, and physical sense of security.

There is another perspective worth considering. While many readers may focus on the mother’s arrest as satisfying consequences, the more significant moment may be the OP’s calm preparation before any of this happened. He kept the threatening emails, had relationships with people who could speak to his character, and had already created practical independence.

Psychologically, that matters. People leaving dysfunctional family systems sometimes learn that boundaries are strongest when they are supported by tangible independence, documentation, and trustworthy people rather than relying solely on another person’s willingness to respect the word “no.”

Psychologist and family-estrangement researcher Lucy Blake explains that adult children commonly identify abuse, neglect, authoritarian parenting, harsh criticism, emotional volatility, and conditional affection among the circumstances behind estrangement.

Her research-based discussion also emphasizes that family separation is complex and can involve both painful loss and the preservation of an individual’s sense of self.

That insight helps explain why the OP’s low contact should not automatically be interpreted as punishment or rebellion. His account suggests it functioned as protection. Once his mother allegedly transformed rejection into a fabricated public-safety accusation, the boundary became more than emotional.

It became practical risk management. His saved emails and supportive witnesses were therefore not minor details; they helped outside authorities evaluate what had happened instead of leaving him trapped inside competing accusations.

Going forward, the safest response would be to preserve every message and official record, document future incidents, strengthen privacy protections with the college, and seek appropriate professional or legal guidance if the behavior continues. Family relationships can sometimes recover, but reconciliation cannot substitute for accountability and safety.

The unsettling question this story leaves behind is simple: when someone repeatedly treats another person’s independence as disobedience, how much distance is enough to finally make a boundary real?

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters celebrated the mother finally facing consequences for her own actions

wdjm − Then my grandma calls guess who was arrested for making a false police report? If you guessed my Nmom you’d be right.

This. This gave me warm fuzzies. Yay on the cops! !! Narcs so rarely get real consequences for their BS.

I'm sorry you've had to live with that for so long - but so glad she finally got what she deserved.

[Reddit User] − The idea that there might be consequences to their actions never occurs to these people.

I can imagine the look on her face as she told them, "I haven't done anything 'wrong'! "

expecting that saying that will make it SO as usual and the cops are thinking, 'Sure. .. Whatever lady. ' They always talk about Karma. ..

MsBe1969 − Wonderful holiday story for those of us raised by narcissists , this really warms my heart that you had back up

from your college mates and the cops were cool with you in the end.

Love that she got a consequence that had nothing to do with you but was completely the result of her own actions. . .

Holidays are hard for us with the narcs in the family. Thanks for this !

These Redditors urged documenting everything and preparing for possible legal protection

MikeGinnyMD − I’m glad it turned out as well as it did.

At this point, I’d be talking to an attorney about

1) getting a restraining order

2) sending her a cease-and-desist letter 3) whether you have a case for civil action (you might not; it wasn’t *your* door that got knocked off the hinges,

it was the school’s, and other than a couple of hours of inconvenience, you suffered no damages)

4) Setting up a power of attorney arrangement with someone you trust so that if you are,

say, incapacitated after an accident, she is not the one who has medical rights over you (Maybe your dad? It’s your call. ).

I’d also make an appointment with a detective in the campus police department and have a chat about “what if she tries this again?”

He might say that having being arrested might keep her from doing it again and your response should be:

“Normally, I’d agree with you that a rational person would not do this again, but in addition to the fact that she’s my mother

and I know her well, the fact that she did it the first time strongly suggests that she’s not a rational person.”

Needless to say, I think that this incident should seal your resolve to go NC with your parents.

You should make it clear to the rest of your family that this is a clear and unambiguous demonstration of the reason why

and that if they aren’t ok with your decision, you’re willing to dismiss them from your life, too.

It sounds from your post like you’re doing well in life overall. You’re proceeding with your academic program, supporting yourself,

and dealing with these stressors by “just getting on with it,” which is healthy. I know it might not feel that way,

but that’s what I see as a physician who works with young people like you. “When you’re going through hell, keep going.” -Winston Churchill

tattoovamp − And now you have concrete proof. The Police will have this on record.

I suggest getting copies to start a paper trail, in case you kne day need an RO or a cease and desist. Gotta admit, I giggled when I read she...

[Reddit User] − So sorry you had to go through this and so pleased it fired back on her.

My mum threatened me to come to the city where I live and camp outside my workplace until I move back.

These users responded with dark humor and satisfaction over the arrest

jippyzippylippy − So, how about next year's Thanksgiving? Gonna go or. ..? /s

chek4me − I wonder if the photographer she hired got any pictures of her being arrested lol. .

These users stressed how dangerous false police reports can become for innocent people

Blurgas − I'm not surprised she got arrested.

People have gotten killed because someone filed a false report with the police claiming the person was an extreme danger(*look up "swatting"*)

Law enforcement does not like being used to risk an innocent persons life because of petty b__lshit

[Reddit User] − Filing a false police report, making a false bomb threat, and arrested on Thanksgiving?

Enjoy that she will be behind bars until at least Monday. She may or may not get out on Monday, so be prepared for either one.

Also, talk to the DA's office about the process, and when you need to go home to testify against her, or if you can Skype in.

I'm glad she has created this evidence against herself.

At least you can tell them, "I didn't make that decision to have her arrested, the police did that; she messed with the wrong people. "

Was refusing Thanksgiving simply a healthy adult boundary? And after an incident this serious, could trust with the family ever realistically return? Share your take below.
