Parents Brought Their Child Into an Adults-Only Spa, Then Blamed Everyone Else for Enforcing the Rule

Adults-only spaces exist for a reason, especially on vacations where guests may pay extra for a quiet break from noise and activity. Most parents understand that some areas are designed specifically for relaxation, but others seem to believe the rules should bend whenever their own child is involved.

The original poster (OP) spent an additional $600 for access to a peaceful adults-only spa during a Thanksgiving cruise. That calm atmosphere changed when a couple brought in a young child who quickly became restless while one parent relaxed nearby.

A spa employee eventually stepped in and politely reminded the family of the age restriction, but the mother’s response made the situation even more irritating. Read on to see why OP felt the parents had ignored both the rules and the many child-friendly options available elsewhere on the ship.

'No kids must not mean MY kid!'

I went on a cruise over Thanksgiving. I paid an extra $600 for access to the ADULTS ONLY spa for my husband and me for the week.

Some entitled guy brought his kid into the spa!

The guy was lying on a lounger sleeping (or just ignoring the kid) while the kid was jumping and squirming around.

The kid looked to be somewhere between 5 and 7 years old and thankfully didn't say anything but was clearly bored and quite active and distracting.

Shortly after I noticed the kid, the spa attendant came and nicely and quietly explained that the spa was for adults only and to please take the child out.

The mom appeared out of nowhere and collected the child while saying, "Oh, honey, THEY don't want you in here, so now we all have to leave".

I mean really!! Even if the spa wasn't explicitly adults only,

why on earth would you think a spa, a place of quiet relaxation, would be remotely of interest to a child.

Especially since the ship was extremely child friendly and had an arcade, a "kid's zone", TWO water slides and bumper cars?!

Rules often feel unfair only when they finally apply to us. Shared spaces work because everyone accepts that some environments are designed for specific purposes, even when that means individual preferences must give way to the expectations of the group.

An adults-only spa is one of those places. People do not pay extra simply for amenities, they also pay for the atmosphere those rules are meant to protect.

The emotional tension in this story was never really about one quiet child. It was about a parent deciding that their personal circumstances deserved an exception to a clearly stated policy. The OP had intentionally spent hundreds of extra dollars for a peaceful retreat, expecting the adults-only rule to be enforced consistently.

Seeing a young child running around immediately undermined that expectation. While the child was not misbehaving in a malicious way, their restlessness was completely understandable. A spa offers very little that naturally appeals to a five- or seven-year-old, making the situation feel less like an unavoidable mistake and more like a parent’s convenience.

A different perspective is that the most revealing moment came after the attendant intervened. Instead of simply apologizing and leaving, the mother told her child, “They don’t want you in here.” That statement shifted responsibility away from the adults who ignored the rule and onto the strangers who expected the advertised policy to be honored.

Children often interpret comments like that personally, creating unnecessary feelings of rejection while shielding the parent from accountability. The easier lesson would have been, “This area is only for grown-ups, so let’s go somewhere else.”

Developmental psychologist Dr. Becky Kennedy has written that parents help children build emotional resilience by setting clear boundaries without blaming others for those limits.

Rather than framing rules as someone else’s fault, she encourages parents to acknowledge disappointment while calmly explaining that some spaces and situations simply have expectations everyone must follow.

Applied here, the cruise staff handled the situation appropriately. The attendant approached quietly, explained the policy respectfully, and gave the family an opportunity to leave without creating a scene.

The mother’s response, however, transformed a simple enforcement of the rules into a narrative where other guests became the villains. That may have protected her pride in the moment, but it also missed an opportunity to model accountability for her child.

It is also worth recognizing that adults-only spaces serve a legitimate purpose even on family-friendly vacations. Cruise ships already provide children’s clubs, pools, water slides, arcades, and countless family activities.

Reserving a few designated areas for adults does not exclude families—it creates balance by ensuring different guests can enjoy the type of vacation they specifically paid for.

The OP’s frustration was therefore understandable. The issue was never about disliking children. It was about expecting a clearly defined environment to remain true to its purpose. Respecting those boundaries benefits everyone, including children, because it teaches that not every space is designed to meet every person’s needs at the same time.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These Redditors blamed the parents for ignoring clearly stated adults-only rules

VinylHighway − "Oh, honey, THEY don't want you in here, so now we all have to leave". Correct

ShesthatGirl0 − It’s not like there’s no where for the kid to go. Some parents are a mess lol

These Redditors argued that children should not be blamed for their parents’ poor decisions

LeRoixs_mommy − "Oh, honey, THEY don't want you in here, so now we all have to leave".

Why make the kid feel bad? It wasn't the kid's fault that the parents can't read and comprehend!

pinkflower200 − People think the rules don't apply to them.

These users supported confronting parents or involving staff when adults-only areas are ignore

MyldExcitement − My favorite thing to do when children are invading an adults only area is to use every 4 letter word I know.

Offended? Too bad. This is an adult area, and this is how adults speak. 🤣🤣🤣

handsheal − Hey lady. I paid $600 to enjoy my day without your child bothering me. Please take your child from the adult only area.

Or pay me back the $600 you are wasting on me.

Icklebunnykins − We went to a resort, adults only pool. Family with 6 kids turned up screaming, bombing in the pool,

throwing drinks and the adults ignored them. I told them twice to shut up and went and got the manager. If looks could have killed, I blew them a kiss...

These commenters shared frustrating experiences with disruptive children in adult-only spaces

Erikthered65 − “It’s for the kids! ” is a phrase that I loathe after a few summers at an island resort restaurant.

Fast food, outside food in general, telling your kid to help themselves to buffets they haven’t paid for,

sending your kids unsupervised to the pool so you can scroll your phone in peace… Those kids always had appalling behaviour.

I’m sure the parents ended up on the receiving end of their entitled attitudes when they became teens.

FarManagement9916 − I got given a spa package at a hotel for a birthday present once.

Saunas, pool, loungers, rounded off with a massage.

Lovely and relaxing for the first half hour until a gaggle if yummy mummies came in with their children.

Whilst the mums were sipping champagne and yapping as loudly as they could, the kids were running in

and out of the saunas slamming the doors, doing cannonballs into the spa pool, and generally being obnoxious.

I just told the spa staff I was leaving because of it and came back a couple of hours later for the massage (which was either not very good,

or I’m just not cut out for them as I felt more tense after than I did before). One of the most stressful experiences of my life.

[Reddit User] − Someone needs to write a book entitled: *I'm a* ***Mom***, *and Other Excuses for Bad Parenting.

Was her remark an attempt to shame the staff, or merely a defensive response to being corrected? Should cruise lines enforce adults-only access more firmly at the entrance rather than waiting until another guest complains?
