Mom Explains Her Period to Her Six-Year-Old Daughter and Gets the Most Honest Reaction

in Social Issues

Children have a way of asking the most honest questions at the exact moment adults least expect them. While some parents might avoid certain conversations until they feel necessary, others believe openness helps kids understand the world around them.

A mother shared the story of the first real conversation she had with her six-year-old daughter about periods. Because she wanted her child to grow up feeling comfortable discussing bodies and health, she decided to answer any questions honestly.

However, she was not prepared for the very first question her daughter asked after seeing period products and learning more about what was happening. The innocent reaction quickly turned into a moment that made people online laugh and relate. Keep reading to see the conversation that sparked a sweet discussion about parenting and honesty.

'Had A Talk With My Daughter About Periods'

My daughter is six. My Mom lied when I was little and told me her tampons were candy that she wouldn’t share with me.

My Nanna slapped a brochure out of my Mom’s hand when she was little because it was about STDs

(my mom couldn’t read yet and liked the picture of the angel on it) I decided to just be open and transparent about my body.

Also, my daughter is very, very in my business and if she noticed blood when we go to take a shower and I’m on the toilet,

well, the truth seemed better than “I’m bleeding out of my vagina but it’s fine”.

So she noticed I was on my period. She knows about them but we haven’t really talked about it. I said “Do you have any questions about periods hon?”

And as she looks from my (rinsed out) diva cup, to my panty liners she goes “Ya, like a million.”

And I said; “Okay pick one and I’ll tell you whatever you want to know.”. She goes “Okay, like… WHHHHHHHY?!?!”

And yelled it waving her arms over her head.. And that sums up how I feel when I’m caught off guard and there’s blood trickling.

Some conversations feel awkward only because generations before us taught us that certain parts of life should remain hidden. Yet children are naturally curious, and the way adults respond to that curiosity can shape whether they grow up feeling comfortable or ashamed about their own bodies.

In this situation, the OP was not simply explaining menstruation to her daughter. She was intentionally creating a different experience from the confusion and secrecy she experienced as a child.

The emotional heart of this story is about breaking a cycle. The OP remembers adults around her treating normal bodily topics as embarrassing or inappropriate, from pretending menstrual products were candy to avoiding conversations about health. Instead of continuing that pattern, she chose honesty.

Her six-year-old daughter’s reaction was funny because it captured the innocent confusion many children have when they first encounter something unfamiliar.

The dramatic “why” was not rejection or fear; it was a child trying to understand how a normal human process works. The OP’s willingness to answer questions gave her daughter a safe place to learn without embarrassment.

A different perspective is that openness about bodies is not only about teaching facts. It is also about building trust. Children notice far more than adults often realize.

If they see something unusual and receive vague answers or feel that certain topics are forbidden, they may learn that their bodies are something to hide. However, when parents explain things calmly and appropriately, children can develop a healthier relationship with questions about health, development, and personal boundaries.

Child development experts have emphasized that honest, age-appropriate conversations help children build confidence and understand their bodies. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends answering children’s questions about bodies and sexuality in a way that is truthful, simple, and appropriate for their developmental stage.

Their guidance notes that children benefit from having trusted adults provide accurate information rather than leaving them to form explanations from confusion or outside sources.

This perspective explains why the OP’s approach matters. Her daughter may not remember every detail of this conversation years from now, but she may remember the feeling behind it: that questions were allowed and that her mother was someone she could trust.

A period was not presented as something scary or shameful, but as one of the many things bodies do.

Ultimately, this story is a reminder that children do not need perfect explanations. They need safe adults who are willing to have honest conversations.

Sometimes parenting means answering serious questions, and sometimes it means laughing when a six-year-old reacts with complete dramatic disbelief. Either way, those small moments can shape how children understand themselves for the rest of their lives.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters praised OP for teaching her daughter early and normalizing periods

starship17 − This is so cute! My grandmother thought she was dying when she got her period.

It’s so important to be open about them because they can start so early.

hikaruandkaoru − Thank you for teaching your daughter early. I'm sure she'll appreciate it when she gets older.

My aunt thought she was dying when she got hers and called my dad to help her.

When I had my first period at age 11 my mother didn't believe me because I was "too young"

so I showered and hand washed my clothes in the shower and didn't speak about it.

She refused to believe that "normal", "healthy" girls could get their periods before 12.

If they did it must've meant there was something wrong with them

or that their parents didn't take care of them so there was no way I could have my period at age 11.

I didn't end up having another period until I was 12 and at that point I told my mum again and this time she believed me because I was 12.

wikedsmaht − It’s so dumb NOT to talk about periods.

Like, 50%+ of the planet gets them, and we get them for decades! It’s not like it’s a rare affliction. Good job normalizing it for your kid.

They highlighted how open conversations about puberty can create healthier attitudes toward bodies and relationships

MaximumTurtleSpeed − Solid job! As an 8yo boy with two older sisters, one of my sisters go to “cool baby brother” stories to this day was

that I had seen a *Tampax Compact* commercial when it was a very new product in the early 90s(? ).

Well my sister walks in at the very end of the commercial and was intrigued.

She asked generally, “what was that?” and I was able to explain to her the expandable applicator, the discrete size sale pitch…

was basically caught her up. Well to this day in my 30s, I’m still proud of that moment but especially my parents and sisters comfort

and directness in teaching/answering questions about puberty/s__ual health.

I guarantee you it’s made me a better friend, uncle and husband (even if ex, haha).

Keep being a cool mom! Also, WHHHHHHHY? !

expat_mel − That's something my mom did that I've always appreciated.

She had this little series of books about the body that she read with me at different ages from like 5 to 10;

if I had any questions, she'd answer them honestly (in an age-appropriate way, of course);

and when I told her that my friend had this book that I really wanted to read (The Body Book from American Girl, iirc),

she looked into it and ended up getting it for me - I read that book about 100 times between the ages of 9 and 13

and it helped me with everything from the basics of puberty to dealing with emotions to how to use different period products.

I'm so glad my mom was open about that stuff when I was young,

because it meant that I never felt ashamed of my body and I always knew I could talk to her about it, even once I got older!

I'm in my late 20s now and I can still talk to her about things like birth control and reproductive health,

and it's all because she set a a solid foundation starting when I was your daughter's age.

Kudos for setting your daughter up for a healthy relationship with her body!

These users shared personal memories of being shocked by their first period

Alloutofsuckers − Oh, precious with the “whyyyyy? ” You’re a good mama! Tell her that’s the question most of us ask about it.

lol I got mine fairly young(10ish) when staying with my grandparents, I was quite stunned.

My grandma, bless her provided me with pads and showed me how to use them.

After I told my mother she promised there weren’t any more surprises except maybe childbirth lol I guess going to a *religious* private school

I guess it didn’t really come up and I figure she didn’t expect it to start so young with me. My memory is foggy from then so I don’t exactly...

.. all I remember is that it freaked me out and I didn’t know what was wrong.

princess_ferocious − Lmao. ..my mum tells me I flatly refused to believe her when she gave me "the talk" as a little kid.

Apparently I was horrified by the whole business!

Farwaters − Poor kid. At least it's only about 40 years of them. .. You're doing a good thing.

My parents decided to break the cycle and get therapy and such, and I have a lot of hope for the next generation, seeing a lot of my peers do...

This commenter shared a funny story about explaining periods to a young child and showed how simple, honest conversations can work well

nomie_lulu − I talked to my daughter about it when she was 6. Like your daughter, she's always very in my business.

We had a chat, and I told her what was going on and that when she's older, she'll get them too.

Kiddo stared at me, thinking for a few seconds, threw me a tiny salute, and said,

"Have fun with the blood coming out of your vagina Mummy" and skipped away. She'll be fine.

They emphasized the importance of education by sharing their own difficult experience with heavy bleeding

Adventurous_Kirsten − I used to bleed so much that it was literally every where.

There were traces of blood from my bed to the toilet, my bed, my clothes, every chair I was seated was full of blood.

It was a week in a blood bath. So my girls know.

And now they’re 8 and 11 and their own periods are on their way (in a few years, not now! ) and they’re horrified.

I have tried to explain over and over again that it’s not normal to bleed as much as I did. But they don’t believe me 🫣

But on the bright site, I know that they are well educated when it comes to periods 😅

Do you think parents should start conversations about puberty early, or should they wait until children begin asking questions?
