Mother Admits She Hates Her Daughter After Years of Feeling Betrayed by Her During an Abusive Marriage

Some wounds do not come from strangers. Sometimes they come from the people you spent your life trying to protect.

This Redditor shares the painful reality of being unable to forgive her daughter after a traumatic family breakdown. Years earlier, she fled an abusive marriage with her two children, only for her daughter to reveal her location to her abusive ex-husband.

After the divorce, their relationship deteriorated further, leaving years of anger, distance, and unresolved pain between them.

Now, as an adult, her daughter has reached out hoping to arrange a meeting with her father, but instead of relief, it has brought back feelings of betrayal and resentment that she has struggled to bury.

'I hate my daughter. This is the first time I admit it out loud'

I know that she was shaped by her environment. I know that I failed in raising her well. I know that she grew up in a toxic environment. But I...

My ex husband was very abusive to me. He is the most charismatic man so nobody believed me for a very long time.

He said that I wasn't leaving his house alive when I took my two children, 14&15 at the time and ran away.

She called after a week and told him where I was.

This was the only time he lost his s__t when there were witnesses around at the motel and they called the cops.

I filed for divorce afterwards and we had shared custody. I gave him everything in exchange of him leaving me alone.

Promised not to ask for my part of our property and savings. Since then my daughter hated me because I ruined her world.

She hated living in two homes.

She started using force against me when she lived with me until my son told her that he would k__l her if she put her hand on me again.

She never came home afterwards. I knew that she wouldn't have the best life with her father now he had nobody else to abuse.

From her social media she seems fine. Daddy is her favorite person and she is very active on dv topics and women's shelters.

She shares any case of dv and her friends praise her for her support for women.

She has contacted me last week to ask me to meet her father who wanted to apologize. After 8 years.

She is 26 now and I haven't seen her since she left at 18. And all she cared about is her dads image.

I truly hate her and I feel awful because we should always love our children. Hell, even parents to killers stay by their side.

Maybe now I understand why she what she is. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree and I am a rotten tree.

Some wounds are difficult to explain because they involve people we are told we should love unconditionally. When the person who causes the deepest pain is a family member, especially a child, emotions can become filled with guilt, grief, anger, and confusion all at once.

Admitting resentment toward someone we expected to love forever can feel almost impossible, but hidden pain does not disappear simply because a relationship carries a special title.

This story is not only about a mother saying she hates her daughter. It is about years of trauma, betrayal, and unresolved grief. The mother experienced abuse from her husband and made a desperate decision to escape with her children.

The moment her daughter revealed her location had life-changing consequences, and from the mother’s perspective, it became connected to the danger she was trying to escape. Over time, that moment appears to have transformed into a deep wound that was never addressed.

The daughter, however, was also a teenager caught inside an abusive family system. She may have experienced the divorce as a loss of the life she understood and may have interpreted events through the influence of her father. Two people can carry completely different versions of the same painful history.

A different perspective is that trauma often distorts family relationships because children in abusive homes are not simply observers. They are affected by manipulation, fear, loyalty conflicts, and the emotional pressure of choosing sides.

Research on domestic violence shows that children exposed to abusive environments can struggle with understanding responsibility and may develop complicated attachments to both the victim and the abusive parent. This does not erase the harm caused by the daughter’s actions or the mother’s pain, but it adds context to why their relationship became so damaged.

Trauma psychologist Dr. Judith Herman, whose work on trauma recovery is widely recognized, explains that healing after traumatic experiences often requires rebuilding a sense of safety, understanding what happened, and reconnecting with personal meaning. Trauma can affect how people interpret relationships and protect themselves emotionally.

Similarly, psychologist Dr. Nadine Burke Harris has discussed how childhood exposure to stressful and unsafe environments can influence emotional development, relationships, and coping patterns later in life.

These insights do not mean the mother must immediately forgive, forget, or accept contact before she is ready. Her anger is connected to real experiences of fear and abandonment.

At the same time, viewing her daughter only through the worst moment of her teenage years may prevent any possibility of understanding how both of them were shaped by the same harmful environment.

The daughter’s public support for domestic violence issues may feel painfully contradictory, but it may also reflect a person trying to make sense of a subject that has deeply affected her life.

The hardest truth about family trauma is that love and hurt can exist together. A parent can love a child and still feel anger toward the choices that child made.

A child can have caused harm and still have been a frightened young person navigating an unhealthy environment. Healing does not require pretending nothing happened. It requires creating enough space to see the full picture.

Before deciding whether reconciliation is possible, the most important step may be addressing the pain that has remained frozen for years. Sometimes forgiveness begins not with excusing another person, but with allowing ourselves to stop carrying the entire weight of the past alone.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters encouraged OP to separate deep hurt from hatred and process emotions more carefully

[Reddit User] − I will just say that your feelings are valid. I believe we should accept all of the emotions that occur within us and not judge them, including...

You were victimized and hurt and your children were too. It must've been tremendously confusing for them.

As a teenager she was old enough to have some agency in her decisions.

But she wasn't old enough to understand the right thing to do. I invite you to forgive yourself your past mistakes and stop judging and shaming yourself.

You don't need to reconcile with your ex or your daughter if you don't want to.

Enoch8910 − I think you’re confusing hurt and anger with h__red.

garbage_queen819 − Have you considered the fact that if your ex was able to manipulate you into staying with him for 14+ years,

of course he'd be able to do the same to your daughter?

Why are you hating your daughter for being manipulated into staying with the very same man who also manipulated you?

If you understand why you stayed as long as you did, you should be able to understand why she's staying as well

These Redditors recommended therapy and support systems to handle the emotional trauma

SCV_local − May I suggest some therapy vs Reddit. It is obviously not a good time to meet her nor the ex

(not sure if you meet him so he gets to feel better about apologizing no care about you that’s narcissistic)

but if you do go, go with a friend who can be a bridge and safety net.

One who doesn’t give an F to stand up for you when you can’t and call a spade a spade.

minkythecat − After all is said and done, you can choose how much of your daughter's social media you see. Choose to not look at it.

You cannot change how she thinks, and if she's pushing for that reconciliation with your ex, perhaps she does not remember the abuse.

I would steer clear, seek wise counsel for yourself and get on with my life. Don't hate her.

Just don't hurt yourself over this any more.

Quick_Chain_1371 − All I see is a very violent family, and a lot of death threats. I'm not one to vouch for therapy, but in your case. ..

These users questioned missing details and wanted to hear the daughter’s perspective

Wandering_Song − This is one of those posts where I have to wonder what the other side of the story is.

Malhavok_Games − How does a teenage girl call her father "behind your back"? Why didn't the two of you talk for almost 8 years?

What event precipitated your son threatening to k__l your daughter? Why does this seem like you think it was a good thing?

I mean, seriously - of course she never came back to your home after being threatened with m__der by her sibling, right?

This is one of those posts where I really wish I could hear the daughters side of things, because a lot of this doesn't sound right to me at all.

fisconsocmod − you hate your daughter for taking her father's side. what is interesting is that she is 26 and is STILL on his side. how is your son?

Can a relationship survive after nearly a decade apart? Should the mother accept the apology request, or protect her own peace first? Share your thoughts below.
