My Adult Son Is Broke and Expects My Teen Daughter to Be His Personal Maid

A father decided to offer sanctuary to his 38-year-old son, Jeremy, who recently hit financial rock bottom. This act of familial kindness immediately backfired.

Within days, Jeremy, his pregnant wife (DIL), and his own teenage son turned the house upside down. They targeted the only remaining minor child, 16-year-old Nora, demanding she hand over her car, her private bathroom, and even her non-vegan food.

When the father refused to “solve the problem” by forcing Nora to comply, he was labeled an [jerk] and had to resort to threatening eviction to protect his daughter.

Now, read the full story:

Not the actual photo

AITA for not "solving the problem" by punishing my daughter?

I have 4 kids, one(F16, Nora) still lives with me.

One of my sons(38M, Jeremy) recently went completely broke (I won't get into details but it wasn't his fault and just a series of bad luck). He asked to move...

The problem is that he doesn't get along with Nora. I allowed Nora to take my old car when she got her license.

Now Jeremy wants to use the car because he "needs it more than a teenager" and Nora will not allow it.

Another problem is food. Both my wife and I are vegan and we don't buy anything non vegan though our kids are allowed to buy anything they want with their...

Nora is not vegan and she buys and cooks her own meals. My DIL who is pregnant is upset that Nora refuses to share and eats her cravings in front...

She has asked us to buy non vegan food as well which morally, I can not do.

Another problem is the room arrangements. My wife and I are on The first floor and everyone else is on the second floor. Nora has a habit of playing violin...

Now they have a problem with it and think Nora needs to get used to not playing as much because once the baby arrives (which is very soon), they are...

The last problem is that Nora refuses to let them use her bathroom. There are 2 bathrooms upstairs and one has always been Nora's and the other one can be...

They think their son(My grandson, Peter 17) should share Nora's bathroom.

They have been fighting non stop and I'm tired of it.

They told me to solve the problem (and by solving they meant, force Nora to do what they want) and I told them if they bother me again I will...

I have a responsibility to my minor child but I don't have a responsibility to them. Now they think I'm an [jerk].

This is less of a family dynamic problem and more of a hostile takeover. Jeremy, the 38-year-old adult, brought his entire family—his pregnant wife, his teenage son, and an incoming baby—into his parents’ home for free, only to immediately try to bully the 16-year-old minor who actually lives there.

The sheer entitlement is staggering. Nora is a resident and a minor dependent; Jeremy is a guest granted temporary charity. Yet, Jeremy and his family feel justified in demanding her car, her private space, and even access to her personal food stash.

The father’s decision to shut down the drama by threatening eviction was not only correct, it was necessary. When charity is met with demands, it stops being charity and becomes abuse. His first and only legal responsibility is to his minor child, Nora.

When an adult son who is accustomed to an independent life suddenly loses everything and is forced back into his childhood home, the psychological fallout can manifest in several destructive ways. Often, the adult guest overcompensates for their loss of control by trying to exert control over the few things they can—in this case, his younger sister and the house rules.

As Susan Heitler, Ph.D., notes in Psychology Today, adult children who move back home often fail to transition from “guest” to “contributing adult,” and instead regress into entitled “child” behavior.

This entitlement is often projected onto siblings. Dr. Heitler notes, “If a parent offers refuge, the guest must respect the established rules and hierarchy of the home, prioritizing the minor dependents.”

Jeremy’s demands—the car, the bathroom, the quiet house—were not requests for shared space; they were attempts to displace Nora and make her sacrifice her stability and identity for their convenience.

It’s crucial that the father did not back down, especially regarding the car. According to a 2023 study by The Zebra, 77% of parents believe that a car fosters independence and responsibility in teenagers.

Taking Nora’s primary source of freedom for a dependent 38-year-old would have been a devastating blow to her self-esteem and autonomy.

Check out how the community responded:

The entire community sided with Nora and her father, condemning Jeremy as a “greedy, entitled mooch” who abused his parents’ charity.

LeaJadis - Jeremy sounds like a problem. You give him an inch and he wants a mile.

He moved in with you, now he wants your car, he wants his sister to buy him (and his wife) food and give up her space. He is such a...

Ok_Tonight_3703 - Well at least Nora sounds like a great kid because your 38 year old sounds like a greedy entitled mooch who married an equally greedy mooch.

imagine being almost 40 years and old enough to be the father of the 16 you are attempting to bully.

badmind88 - Now they think I'm an [jerk]. Kick them the [heck] out then. If they're going to think you're an [jerk], give them a good reason for that belief,...

Redditors detailed the sheer audacity of Jeremy’s demands, especially concerning Nora’s food and the car.

Ok_Tonight_3703 - Where do they get the audacity to think that a minor should use her own money to feed an adult?

Why do they think they can take a car that they didn’t pay for and can’t even afford gas for let alone insurance.

Then demanding access to a bathroom when they already have one in a house where they are living rent free.

Trailsya - Son is waaaay older than her, brings not just himself but also a wife, a son and soon a little baby.

This is not fair on Nora that they then start to push themselves in and start making all kinds of demands. The car was for her. Son should not be...

The community universally supported the father’s threat of eviction as the only necessary solution to protect his minor child.

PippiSpeaks - Yes, you can help your son our TEMPORARILY, but Nora is still a minor child living in the family home.

Your son doesn't get to ask for help and then demand everything suit him.

Trailsya - I feel sorry for Nora for her childhood being disrupted in this way. Once you kick them out, don't let them back in.

coppeliuseyes - NTA. Nora sounds like a great, responsible kid. You should be proud of her.

Your son and SIL seem to think the world revolves around them and their children. I think you're doing the right thing standing by your minor daughter.

The father made the right call in drawing a firm line. His primary duty is to the minor living in his house, not to his adult son whose failure in life should not be Nora’s problem.

Jeremy and his family need a reality check that gratitude and respect are required when living rent-free. The father’s threat to “solve the problem by kicking them out” was the only language Jeremy seemed to understand.

Should the father have kicked them out immediately, or was the warning enough? Do you think Jeremy will escalate his demands or actually reform his behavior?
