Neighbor Secretly Uses His WiFi for a Year, Then Offers Half the Bill After Getting Caught

by Leona Pham

Living in an apartment means sharing walls, hallways, and sometimes more than you ever planned to share.

Most neighbors try to keep things friendly, but boundaries can get blurry fast when money is involved, especially when someone starts treating another person’s resources like they are partly theirs.

One Redditor discovered that their painfully slow internet was not just a technical problem.

A technician found several unfamiliar devices connected to the network, and the trail apparently led to a neighbor who had been using the Wi-Fi without permission.

After the password was changed, a note appeared under the door with an apology and a surprising proposal.

The neighbor wanted access again, this time offering to help with the monthly bill.

Now the poster is torn between sympathy and frustration, while worrying about what refusing could do to an otherwise peaceful neighbor relationship. Scroll down to see how people reacted.

An apartment resident discovers a neighbor has secretly been using their Wi-Fi for a year

Neighbor Secretly Uses His WiFi for a Year, Then Offers Half the Bill After Getting Caught
not the actual photo

'My neighbor has been using my wifi for a year and now they're asking me to split the bill?'

I live in an apartment and about a week ago my internet was acting super

slow. Called the provider and they sent a tech out. Guy takes a look and

says that I have like 3 devices connected that aren't mine. Turns out my

neighbor somehow got my password (I think from the previous tenant

maybe?) and has been using my wifi this whole time.

I changed the password obviously and the next day theres a note under my

door. Its from the neighbor apologizing but also asking if we could "work

something out" since their financial situation is tight and they cant afford

internet right now. They offered to pay half my bill going forward if I give them the new password.

Part of me feels bad cause I get being broke, I've been there. I actually have

some money saved up from Stаke now though. But also like... you were

literally stealing from me for a year? And now you want to negotiate?

We share a wall and I can hear everything. If I say no I'm worried it'll get

awkward or they'll resent me. They seem nice otherwise, we've chatted a

few times in the hallway. But this whole thing feels manipulative somehow?

It is difficult to hold a boundary when the person crossing it has a hardship that feels familiar.

Someone who has struggled financially before may understand exactly why another person would desperately want to avoid an extra monthly bill.

That empathy can make a simple “no” feel unnecessarily cruel.

In this situation, the apartment resident is not only deciding whether to share Wi-Fi.

They are weighing compassion against the uncomfortable knowledge that their neighbor had already been benefiting from something without permission for roughly a year.

The emotional conflict comes from how the request was made after the discovery.

Had the neighbor approached them beforehand, explained the financial problem, and offered to split the cost, the arrangement might have felt completely different.

Instead, permission was requested only after unauthorized access disappeared.

That sequence changes the meaning of the offer. The resident can sympathize with financial hardship while still feeling that trust was violated.

Their anxiety about awkward hallway encounters and resentment through a shared wall adds another pressure: saying yes might seem easier than living beside someone who has been told no.

There is also a less obvious perspective here. The neighbor’s request does not necessarily prove deliberate manipulation.

They may feel embarrassed, financially cornered, and genuinely hopeful that paying half could repair the situation.

At the same time, good intentions after being caught do not erase the original boundary violation.

The resident does not need to determine whether the neighbor is a “bad person” before deciding that sharing internet access feels uncomfortable.

Sometimes people become trapped trying to judge another person’s character when the more useful question is simply whether an arrangement feels safe and fair.

That insight fits this situation particularly well.

The resident’s guilt does not automatically mean refusing would be selfish; it may simply mean they dislike causing discomfort for someone they know is struggling.

Agreeing primarily to prevent neighborhood awkwardness could eventually create more tension, especially if internet speeds fall again, payments stop, or security concerns arise.

A reasonable solution is to keep the new password private while remaining polite and normal toward the neighbor.

Compassion can include understanding someone’s circumstances without taking responsibility for solving them.

The real test may come afterward: if the neighbor accepts that boundary respectfully, the relationship can probably remain cordial.

If resentment follows, that would only strengthen the case for having kept the boundary in the first place.

These Redditors warned that sharing WiFi creates security, legal, and privacy risks

Kryptonite-Rose − Tell them you are using the WIFI for work purposes and due to security can no longer share.

Educational-Mind2359 − I think most people are going to say no don’t do it.

Your internet will be slower and if they do some questionable things on your network it could get you in trouble.

anonymous-12358 − It’s a security risk on top of your neighbour being an a__hole.

craptasticluke − If you otherwise have a good relationship with this person

and are comfortable communicating with them every month to get their

share, I wouldn’t blame you for helping them out. But you definitely aren’t obligated to.

The only real concern here is if they might use your internet to access or

download illegal content, you could potentially get in legal trouble since

the service is under your name. Just something to keep in mind.

This group said the neighbor already stole service and owes repayment, not another favor

QwestionAsker − Short answer: no, don’t do it Long answer: if anything

they owe YOU money for using half your internet for all that time. you

don’t owe them anything. They literally stole from you.

Traditional-Stage-12 − No f__k them lmao, unless they want to backpay you

for all the internet they already stole, And even then you gonna have slow internet speeds

MoonbeamLotus − They’ve been stealing from you for a year and only want

to come clean now that they’ve been caught? It’s free at the library, just sayin.

ACadder − Say sure! If you pay it retroactively for the full year you've been

using it. I understand if money is tight, but you could make smaller

payments along with the half monthly until it's paid off. Seems fair.

husbandwithregret − He used it for a whole year and had plenty of time to

come clean or get his own. That's his problem now. He can go to a coffee shop or the library for Internet.

These commenters stressed that sharing is only reasonable when permission comes first

Moon_Frost − People need to grow a backbone. Why are you feeling sorry

for someone that's been stealing from you? Personally I'd tell them their

lucky you don't report them. Worried about awkwardness and resentment

from a thief. .. Christ. . If they were broke and wanted to do this, they could

have asked first as a sign of respect, being broke is no excuse for this.

For starters, even if you had the bandwidth to support them without

affecting you, would you really trust someone like that on your home

network? I know I wouldn't. You never know the network skills people have

and what accounts you've connected to the network being susceptible to a breach.

ProfessionChemical28 − Me & my neighbor shared WiFi once when I lived in

a split level house BUT it was agreed upon from the start. If someone was

stealing from me instead of just asking upfront I would not let them continue doing it.

The neighbor’s apology may sound reasonable on the surface, but the bigger issue is that they used someone else’s internet for months without permission and only tried to make a deal after getting caught.

Feeling sympathy for financial hardship doesn’t mean the poster has to keep sharing access, especially when privacy, security, and responsibility are involved.

Do you think accepting half the bill would be a fair compromise, or would it reward behavior that already crossed a line? How would you handle living next door afterward? Share your take below.
