Paramedic Jokes About a “Coke Habit” at 7-Eleven, Then a Stranger Reports Him for Drugs

in Social Issues

Miscommunication can happen anywhere, but some misunderstandings become far more dramatic than they ever needed to be.

Sometimes, the hardest part is not the accusation itself, but having to deal with the consequences of someone else’s assumption.

The original poster (OP) was finishing a long weekend of helping his family move when he stopped for a drink before work.

A quick joke about a Coca-Cola Slurpee turned into a complaint that questioned his professionalism as an emergency responder.

With his job temporarily affected, OP had to wait for the truth to come out. Keep reading to see how the situation ended.

Paramedic makes an innocent joke about a Coke Slurpee

Paramedic Jokes About a “Coke Habit” at 7-Eleven, Then a Stranger Reports Him for Drugs
not the actual photo

'My "Coke Habit" got me in trouble..?'...well not really, but I did have to pee in a cup.

So it's been a long weekend. My two sons and I were helping my daughter

move. It was a nice and warm weekend and so on our last load to her

house, I decided to treat the crew and myself to some Slurpee's from the

local 7-11. Much to my dismay, the Coke dispenser was doing a thaw cycle

and wasn't available. The rest of the crew likes the other flavors and so

they were satisfied but I had to settle for a Dr. Pepper instead.

We get to her new house, get everything unloaded and I peel off as I have

to get to work in a few hours. Quick shower, get into my uniform (I'm a

paramedic) and since it's been a while and I'm really craving a Slurpee, I

stop at the same 7-11 on my way to the station. The machine had finished

cycling and was running. Yay!

As I'm paying, the clerk (who sees me in the all the time) jokes "Had to

come back for one didn't ya?" to which I replied "Yeah, this Coke Habit is a

crutch."

I'm wishing I hadn't made that joke as some woman heard that and started

ranting about how I shouldn't do drugs. I tried to explain the joke to her.

You know..."I have a thing for Coca-Cola Slurpee's, to the point that it's a

habit of getting getting them, Coca-Cola is often shortened to "Coke", I

have a habit of getting Coke Slurpee's...Coke Habit?"

Nope, woman would not listen. Started ranting more about how EMS staff

should not be taking drugs and that she's going to report me to the

department and stormed off.

I got to the station and I went straight away to the Captain's office. I

explained what happened and that the woman threatened to report me.

He said if she did, we'd deal with it them. He also asked me if I were to be

d__g tested would the results come back clean. I said that they would

without hesitation. He sent me on my way.

In the middle of dinner, the Captain calls me into his office and says that I'll

have to go home for the rest of the shift. I'm then to report to one of the

local labs in the area and take a d__g screening and that I'm not to come in

until the results are processed. Typically 3 days. Yes, the miserable

twatwaffle reported my ass and I'm put on the inactive roster until results are in.

Naturally they came back clean and so the Captain called me Yesterday and

said that I was clear to come back. Since this was a false report and I hadn't

done anything illegal or dangerous I'm still getting paid for the mini-

staycation and I'm back to work later today.

Well done lady, all you achieved is wasting taxpayer dollars getting me

tested for making a joke and letting me sit at home playing Minecraft while

binge watching some of the shows I've been meaning to catch up on. Way

to go you miserable b__ch.

Sometimes the most harmless moments can become complicated when people hear what they expect to hear instead of what was actually said.

A simple joke, a casual comment, or a misunderstood phrase can suddenly turn into a serious situation when someone decides they know the full story without asking questions.

In OP’s case, the situation was never really about a Slurpee or a word choice.

It was about how quickly assumptions can replace common sense.

OP was simply making a joke about his love for Coca-Cola, using the familiar nickname “Coke” and exaggerating it into the phrase “Coke habit.”

To him, it was an obvious play on words.

However, the listener interpreted the phrase through a completely different lens and immediately connected it to illegal substances.

Instead of asking for clarification, she jumped straight to judgment and escalated a harmless interaction into a formal complaint.

There is also an interesting psychological element behind this reaction.

People often rely on their existing beliefs and experiences when interpreting unclear information.

A person who is already concerned about drug use, public safety, or professional responsibility may be more likely to interpret an ambiguous statement as a warning sign rather than a joke.

In OP’s situation, the fact that he worked as a paramedic may have intensified the woman’s reaction because she believed healthcare workers should meet a higher standard of behavior.

This explains why OP’s experience became so frustrating.

The woman may have believed she was protecting the public, but her certainty prevented her from considering a simpler explanation.

A quick question such as “What do you mean by Coke habit?” would likely have ended the situation immediately.

Instead, a misunderstanding resulted in unnecessary stress, administrative work, and a drug screening that OP never needed.

At the same time, the department’s response shows why safety procedures exist.

For emergency personnel, public trust is extremely important, and even questionable reports may need to be reviewed.

The problem was not that the complaint was investigated, but that a conclusion was reached before understanding the context.

The bigger lesson is that misunderstandings become harmful when people stop being curious.

Asking one extra question can prevent unnecessary conflict, protect reputations, and save everyone involved time and frustration.

A little patience and willingness to listen can turn an embarrassing misunderstanding into nothing more than a funny story.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters joked that OP gained unexpected time off but criticized the caller for causing unnecessary trouble

eldarwen9999 − At least you got a few days off paid. Hope you enjoyed yourself

Lazy_Helicopter_2659 − I spot an opportunity there for additional time off. .. ;-)

GodDamnShadowban − The thing that annoys me is she will live her life

thinking she was right and not a nosey i__ot who short staffed an

ambulance crew.

These commenters agreed the accusation came from misunderstanding a harmless joke

amyvic − If she had listened to any of the conversation you had with the

clerk, she would have understood it was a joke. She only heard “Coke habit”

and ran with it. Too bad they can’t fine her for a false report and wasting

people’s time and money. People need to mind their business.

MeFolly − Wait until she learns that in some parts of the US, it is common

to call every soft drink a Coke. As in ‘hand me an orange Coke, would you’.

Coke habits abound there, three four five a day

Dakotasunsets − She was a miserable person who wanted to make

everyone on else miserable. If that Karen was old enough to go to a 7-11,

she was old enough to have heard the "Dad joke" about Coke habit with

the double entendre meaning. Karen's are going to Karen, I guess. ..

CardoconAlmendras − French people rarely says Coca-Cola, just Coke and I

had a little cultural shock with so many people telling me they would love

some Coke right now 😅 (just the few seconds till you get the context).

This woman would have an aneurysm there.

These commenters humorously defended Dr Pepper and teased OP for calling it a lesser replacement

TheHouseofDove − You had to “settle” for the Dr Pepper slurpee? The best

slurpee flavor known to man which isn’t very easily found and some of us

have had to drive 30 minutes or more to get one? Man.

ArchStantonsNeighbor − “Settled for Dr Pepper” should be a fireable

offense right there. How dare you insult the good doctor! !

These commenters supported stronger consequences for false reports and suggested the caller should face accountability

Mostly_Satire − You are a good person. A lot better than me. I would not

have said anything and, if asked, deny everything and gaslight. If caught

then I'd demand to see the written complaint and use that to file for

defamation. But I have issues.

Striking_Programmer4 − False reports like this deserve punitive

punishment. This woman should have to pay the taxpayers back for the

testing and your 3 days salary

tennesseejeff − Next time you see her, have a side conversation with the

cashier about how your dealer has Coke that doesn't show up on the tests,

thank goodness. And after twatwaffle leaves, thank them for being your

Coke dealer. :)

The OP’s innocent joke about a Coca-Cola Slurpee turned into an unexpected workplace headache when a stranger assumed the worst and reported it.

While the complaint led to unnecessary stress and resources being spent, the situation also showed the importance of having proper procedures when accusations involve emergency personnel.

In the end, OP lost a few days of work but gained some unexpected downtime.

Do you think the woman was genuinely concerned or did she overreact without understanding the context?
