Pregnant Woman Asked for Help, But Her Husband Called Her Lazy Instead

Small moments can reveal a lot about a relationship, especially during stressful times. When one person feels vulnerable and needs support, a simple request can become deeply hurtful if it is met with frustration instead of understanding.

A pregnant woman shared a situation that left her questioning whether she expected too much from her husband. She was dealing with ongoing pelvic pain and had been sent to the hospital for extra monitoring after a midwife appointment.

After asking her husband for help getting to the correct hospital building, she felt dismissed when he chose not to drive the extra distance and accused her of being unwilling to walk.

The argument continued even after she returned home, leaving her upset about the lack of support during a moment when she felt she needed it most. Scroll down to find out how readers viewed the situation.

'AITA for being upset that my husband called me lazy during a pregnancy hospital visit?'

I’m 26 weeks pregnant and have been struggling with pelvic girdle pain, so walking and standing for long periods can be quite uncomfortable.

Today I had a midwife appointment at my GP surgery.

During the appointment we discussed my baby’s movements,

and the midwife wanted me to go to the maternity assessment unit at the hospital for monitoring.

I had already walked about 15 minutes from home to the GP. After the appointment I called my husband ( it was 1 pm he was on his way back...

and asked if he could pick me up and drop me at the maternity building at the hospital (20 mins drive from the GP).

He came, but instead drove me to the main hospital entrance and told me to walk to the maternity building from there.

I asked why he couldn’t just drive me to the maternity building entrance since it was only two buildings further, it didn’t make sense to me honestly.

He got angry, called me lazy, and started shouting at me. Eventually he did drive me to the maternity entrance.

I spent about two hours at the hospital and then got an Uber home. My husband was at home with our 3-year-old and didn’t offer to pick me up.

When I got home upset, he called me lazy again. I snapped back and we argued.

From my perspective, I wasn’t asking for anything unreasonable.

I was pregnant, in pain, and attending a hospital assessment because of concerns about the baby.

From his perspective, he seems to think I was being demanding and unwilling to walk.

AITA for being upset about this and expecting a bit more help and consideration?

Pregnancy often reveals the difference between needing help and feeling like a burden. For many people, asking for support during a physically difficult time can already feel vulnerable. When that request is met with criticism instead of care, the emotional pain can come from feeling unseen rather than from the practical problem itself.

In this situation, the OP was not simply upset about having to walk a little farther. The deeper issue was feeling dismissed during a moment when she was already dealing with physical discomfort and uncertainty about her baby’s health. She had pelvic girdle pain, had already walked to the appointment, and was being sent for additional monitoring.

From her perspective, asking her husband to drive a few extra minutes was not about convenience, it was about wanting her partner to recognize that she was struggling. Being called “lazy” transformed a simple disagreement into something much more personal because it attacked her character rather than addressing the situation.

A different perspective is that this conflict may represent two completely different interpretations of effort. Her husband may have viewed the request as unnecessary because he focused on the physical distance rather than the emotional context. He may have seen it as “a short walk” while OP experienced it as another painful demand placed on a body already under strain.

This is common in relationships: one person evaluates a situation based on what seems objectively easy, while the other experiences it through the reality of their physical or emotional limitations. The problem is that pregnancy, especially when accompanied by pain, is not simply a matter of willpower.

Psychologist John Gottman has studied how couples handle conflict and explains that successful relationships depend heavily on responding to a partner’s needs with understanding rather than criticism.

He has found that contemptuous or dismissive communication, such as insults or attacking a partner’s character, can be especially damaging because it makes people feel disrespected rather than heard.

This insight connects strongly to OP’s experience. The disagreement itself could have been resolved easily if both partners had focused on the practical issue.

However, calling her lazy changed the conversation from “Can we handle this differently?” into “Are you being unreasonable?” That shift can create lasting resentment because it makes a person feel judged during a time when they need emotional safety.

At the same time, this story highlights that support in a relationship is not always about completing a huge task. Sometimes it is about noticing when someone needs extra care. Driving a few additional minutes may have been a small action, but it carried a larger emotional meaning: “I understand you are uncomfortable, and I want to make this easier.”

OP’s frustration seems less about the hospital entrance and more about wanting to feel like she and her baby were a priority. During major life transitions, especially pregnancy, small moments of compassion often matter more than people realize.

A healthy partnership is not built on measuring who is asking for too much; it is built on recognizing when the person you love needs you to show up.

Check out how the community responded:

These commenters agreed the husband’s refusal to help with a short drive was unreasonable

Mytweezer − NTA. Why on earth would he not have dropped you off at the right building?

Pokewob123 − I can safely say you are definitely NOT the a__hole - during a pregnancy,

the partner's responsibility (in my opinion at least) is to make the life of the other as easy as possible.

You 100% did not ask for anything unreasonable, a lift 2 buildings down would not have been a crazy ask even if you weren't pregnant.

On top of this, calling you lazy is completely insulting, as you were not as you say 'unwilling to walk', but rather seeking a less painful solution.

OP is definitely in the right and very justified in expecting more help and consideration.

crab_grams − NTA. Laughable that he's calling you lazy but he's too lazy to even drive a couple of extra minutes to a nearby building

These Redditors viewed his behavior as a serious warning sign and urged OP to prioritize safety

Lunar-Eclipse0204 − RED FLAG ALERT! this is not ok of him and yes you should be upset that he is treating you the way he is. NTA

Unfair-Chain-7954 − Start planning your exit strategy. Pregnancy is a time for abuse to begin,

your husband is clearly starting his abuse against you through petty insults which will evolve in to more serious situations.

Pregnancy is suppose to be a time where you rely on your support network, you are at your most vulnerable time and your so-called partner is clearly not interested.

Get yourself ready to leave with both children. Document everything he does, record, everything. Be ready to leave.

MissionRevolution306 − He hates you. NTA, but please be safe.

These users criticized the husband’s lack of support and compassion during pregnancy

CSnarf − NTA- like what in hell did I just read? !

My husband once dropped me at the wrong place at a hospital- but only because he was deeply panicking about me being okay and misread a sign.

If I was in pain and my husband yelled at me , calling me lazy- the absolute hellfire I would reign down on him.

Paindepiceaubeurre − It really saddens me when women settle with men who so obviously despise them.

Your husband is a p__ck and doesn’t care about you. Never in a million years would my husband have treated me like that during my pregnancy.

loranlily − Does he shout at you often?

axley58678 − NTA. Doesn’t sound like he likes you much.

Should a partner always go the extra mile during pregnancy, or was this conflict about deeper relationship issues? How would you handle a similar situation? Share your thoughts below!
