Pregnant Woman Refuses To Fund Husband’s House Loan After He Walked Out On Her

Money decisions in a marriage are rarely just about money. Behind every financial choice are questions about trust, security, and whether both partners feel protected if things go wrong.

OP is facing that dilemma while discussing a major housing decision with her husband. Her husband wants to structure the loan in a way that puts the property and debt under his name, while OP contributes her income toward paying it off.

On paper, it may seem like a practical arrangement, but OP feels uncomfortable because she worries about what would happen if their relationship became unstable.

When she explained why she was hesitant, the conversation turned into an argument about trust and past actions. Her husband believes she is holding onto an old conflict, while OP feels that the event revealed something important about how he handles anger and responsibility.

Now she is wondering whether refusing to combine her finances makes her unreasonable. Read on to see what happened.

'AITAH for refusing to use my salary to pay off a future loan because he abandoned me 5 months ago while raising our 9 months old + pregnant?'

My husband 32M and I 34F are looking into housing.

He wants to take the loan out in his name only, pay all daily bills, and have me send him my salary to pay off the housing loan.

We can't put it in both our names. That's the type of loan. We're not in the USA.

I told him I'm not comfortable with the idea because when the loan is paid off the money will be in his name without legal protection.

When he asked why I don't trust him, I brought up what happened in March.

I was pregnant, suffering from morning sickness, and caring for our then 9 month old baby.

After an argument over baby's sleeping routine, I admit did curse something like

"what the f__k are you doing yourself right now at least I'm trying to do something" he left for two days and told me to

"raise the baby alone." I had to contact him and track him down and he demanded an apology first

Now he is "baffled" and acting deeply wounded that I don't trust him. He claims He did not abandon me because he didn't empty our bank accounts.

He says was just "cooling off" because I cursed during the fight.

And he says "I can't imagine how he felt that time, working and coming home to take over with the baby stuff only for me to use F bombs"

Using curse words wasn't OKAY but to be abandoned like that?? I feel like he has no remorse and if he's angry enough, he'll do it again.

His anger trumps all responsibility when he's angry enough.

He’s now guilt-tripping me, saying our financial future is ruined because we haven't saved in years...

AITA for wanting to keep my money separate after he walked out on me 5 months ago?

Trust is rarely destroyed by one argument alone. More often, it changes when someone experiences a moment where they needed support and instead felt abandoned. In this story, the disagreement is framed around money and housing, but the deeper conflict is about whether the OP feels safe relying on her partner when life becomes difficult.

The emotional conflict comes from two competing experiences. The husband appears to view the March incident as a temporary argument where he needed space after feeling hurt by being cursed at. From his perspective, he may believe he was unfairly judged for taking time away rather than leaving permanently.

However, the OP experienced the situation very differently. She was pregnant, caring for an infant, physically exhausted, and suddenly left to manage everything alone. For her, the important question is not whether he intended to abandon the family. It is whether she can trust that he will remain present during future moments of stress.

Money adds another layer because financial decisions are closely connected to security. The OP is not simply refusing to contribute. She is questioning whether it is wise to transfer her income toward an asset that would legally belong only to him, especially after a recent event made her feel vulnerable.

A different perspective is that both partners may be focusing on different forms of pain. The husband is focused on feeling disrespected during the argument, while the OP is focused on feeling unsupported afterward. Both emotions can exist, but they require accountability from both sides.

An apology for using harsh language does not erase the impact of being left alone with a baby. Likewise, feeling abandoned does not mean the original argument never mattered.

Relationship researcher John Gottman has studied how couples repair damage after conflict. His research emphasizes that healthy relationships depend not on avoiding disagreements, but on successful repair attempts: acknowledging harm, taking responsibility, and rebuilding trust after painful moments.

The Gottman Institute’s guide to repairing relationships after conflict explains that partners need to recognize each other’s emotional reality rather than simply defend their own position.

That insight is important here because the housing decision may be happening before the emotional damage has actually been addressed. A mortgage or loan cannot create trust that is missing. If one partner feels financially exposed and emotionally uncertain, combining resources may feel like taking a major risk.

The OP’s desire to keep her salary separate is not necessarily a punishment. It can be a boundary while the couple works through whether trust has truly been repaired.

At the same time, the long-term solution cannot simply be separate finances and unresolved resentment. They need a conversation about conflict rules, especially what happens when one person becomes angry.

A strong partnership is not measured only by how people behave during easy periods. It is revealed when both people are exhausted, frustrated, and under pressure. Before making a major financial commitment, the bigger question may be whether both partners feel confident that the other person will stay on their side when life becomes overwhelming.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters questioned why OP stays in the relationship and warned about a difficult future

TossOffM8 − NTA, but you know this is what the rest of your life will look like with this man. This is such a sad future for your children.

Designer_Thought2907 − NTA, I get why he's with you, but why are you with him?

Dipshitistan − NTA, except for the part where you’re still with him.

These Redditors viewed the husband’s behavior as a manipulative punishment rather than a healthy way to handle conflict

Daskleine − So. Whenever you curse he could walk out and throw a temper tantrum without consideration for you or his own children? To punish you? Nta.

Leftover_tech − Poor baby is 34 years old and can't deal with the foreseeable consequences of his own actions.

He didn't say "I need to cool down, going for a walk" and return in an hour or two.

You had to pretend to be in the wrong in order to get him to come back and act like an adult.

He also wants a gold star for not running off with all the money. He actually used that as evidence that he had not run away.

But NOW you know what he will do when he DOES run away. Don't commit yourself to any financial responsibility with this person.

ETA: OOPS! Definitely NTA, dear lady.

jasemina8487 − NTA you dont abandon your pregnant wife and baby cos your fragile feelings got a booboo cos you heard a curse,

unless you fully plan on getting seperated.

what he did, and is still doing, is manipulative. there is no guarantee he wont s__ew you iver financially. dont do that.

not unless there is legal paperwork filed stating he will pay it back to you or face consequences for it which you can use in court if things go south.

These users advised OP to protect her finances and understand her legal ownership of assets

Ok-Lingonberry3539 − Keep your money separate and start looking for a way out. NTA.

Men want all the benefits without any risk and it’s insane. You stand your ground. Do not ruin your future.

Shambo_Poster − 'He claims he did not abandon me because he didn't empty *our* bank accounts'

Nope, no way, no how is that man ever even remotely getting access to my money.

He frames that like it would have been an acceptable thing to do when you're at home with a baby!

I personally would never get over that comment. You are definitely NTA!

Jeanne_hjk − Please read this! The mortgage and the deed are two separate things.

Make sure your name is definitely on the deed because that’s what shows who OWNS it.

The loan papers only show who is responsible for PAYING for it. Also, NTA.

Katcar2007 − I can’t get past having a 9 month old and being pregnant! Especially with a dude like him.

Do you think the wife was right to keep her salary separate after what happened, or should couples always combine finances when planning a future together? How would you handle a situation where love and financial security collide? Share your thoughts below.
