Previous Owner Wanted Another Year Of Plums, The New Owner Had Other Plans

Buying a new home often means taking on someone else’s memories, but that does not always mean inheriting their traditions too. A place can hold sentimental value for previous owners while still becoming a new chapter for the people who live there now.

The original poster bought a house with a large plum tree in the backyard. Shortly after moving in, the previous owner reached out with a request connected to her late mother’s memory.

Wanting to be kind, the poster agreed, but the visit did not go quite as expected. Now, a year later, she has decided to keep the harvest for herself, causing tension with the former owner. Read on to find out whether she crossed a line.

A homeowner refused to let the previous owner continue harvesting fruit from a tree now on her property

'AITJ for telling the previous owner of my house she cant come pick fruit from my tree anymore?'

I bought my house last summer and theres a big plum tree in the backyard.

A few weeks after moving in, the previous owner messaged me saying her late mother planted it and asked if she could collect some plums when they were ready.

I said sure because I understood the sentimental part.

When she came over she brought her husband, two buckets and a ladder.

They picked nearly every ripe plum, including branches hanging over my patio, and left a bunch of broken twigs and fruit on the ground.

I barely got any myself. Apparently her family has used those plums to make jam every year for almost 20 years.

She contacted me again asking what weekend she can come this year.

I told her I planned on keeping the fruit this time since the tree is on my property and I actually want to make something with it.

She got pretty upset and said I knew the tree had meaning to her family. She even offered me a few jars of jam, but that isnt really the point.

I spent a lot of money fixing up this yard and I dont want people treating part of it like it still belongs to them.

My sister thinks I should let her take one bucket because its a family tradition and costs me nothing.

I feel bad about the connection to her mom, but I also dont think buying a house means the old owners get yearly access to whatever they miss. AITJ?

Sometimes the hardest part of moving forward is accepting that meaningful memories and legal ownership are not the same thing. A home can hold decades of family history, favorite traditions, and emotional attachment, but once it changes hands, those memories do not automatically become shared responsibilities for the new owner.

That reality can feel painful for the seller and uncomfortable for the buyer, especially when both people are trying to honor something they value for very different reasons.

From a third-person perspective, the OP’s hesitation was not really about a bucket of plums. It was about trust and expectations. During the first visit, the previous owner asked for “some” fruit, which sounded like a modest sentimental request.

Instead, she arrived prepared to harvest nearly the entire crop, brought equipment to do so, and left behind broken branches and fallen fruit. Whether intentional or not, that experience changed the nature of the arrangement.

The OP was left feeling less like a generous homeowner and more like someone who had temporarily surrendered control over part of his own property. It is understandable that he no longer wanted to repeat an experience that had already left him disappointed.

A different perspective is that both people are grieving different losses. The previous owner may genuinely associate the plum tree with her late mother and a tradition that lasted nearly twenty years. Returning each season probably feels like maintaining a connection to someone she loved.

At the same time, the OP is building his own memories in a home he worked hard to purchase. Psychological research suggests that people often develop a strong sense of attachment to places because they become part of personal identity.

Those attachments are real, but they cannot exist equally for two owners at the same time. Eventually, one family’s memories must make room for another family’s future.

Environmental psychologist Professor Susan Clayton explains that place attachment is a normal emotional bond people develop with meaningful locations, particularly homes connected to family history and important life events. Those attachments can remain powerful long after someone has moved away.

However, healthy adjustment also involves recognizing that places continue to evolve and take on new meaning for the people who live there now. Respecting that transition allows memories to be preserved without expecting continued ownership or control.

That perspective helps explain why emotions ran so high. The previous owner was not simply asking for fruit; she was trying to continue a family ritual.

The OP, meanwhile, was protecting his ability to begin traditions of his own. Her offer of homemade jam showed that she likely viewed the exchange as mutually generous, but it did not address the issue that mattered most to him: the feeling that his hospitality had been stretched beyond what he originally agreed to.

Kindness does not require repeating an arrangement that no longer feels comfortable. If the OP ever chooses to share fruit again, it should be on terms that respect his property, his harvest, and his boundaries.

Equally, if he decides not to, that choice does not erase the previous owner’s memories. The tree can remain part of her family’s story while fully belonging to the family that now calls the house home.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These Redditors said OP should clearly communicate boundaries because the previous owner abused their generosity

Aromatic_Recipe1749 − If you hear from her again, tell her that truth. You were shocked that they came and greedily picked virtually ALL the fruit last year.

To top it off they left a mess behind for you to clean up.

Perhaps if they had shown a little class and consideration you’d be more generous but they blew it.

Big_Year_526 − Put it in writing, be polite but firm.   "Dear x, I want to clarify that I have not agreed to you having access to my property every year.

Last year I was not happy with the fact that you took almost every piece of fruit, not the state you left my property in after picking.

In order to avoid further confusion, I do not give you permission to come on my property or harvest plums this year. "

Queen_V_1 − So she offered a few jars after you cut her off? ?? Last year it was zero. OMG, the lack of basic social skills from this woman.

Including taking all the plums and leaving a messy yard.

OP, tell her your insurance won't cover strangers coming to your property, climbing trees and breaking branches. Lawsuit waiting to happen.

Med9876 − NTJ You own the house, property and tree. The previous owners have no right to the fruit and abused your previous graciousness.

This group emphasized that ownership transferred with the property, so the fruit tree now belongs to OP

AnIcyReception − NTJ If that tree was so important, she shouldn't have sold it

Similar_Corner8081 − NTJ My goodness if she had just picked a few off the tree it would have been better. She picked them all. Your tree your fruit.

jax2love − She lost her rights to the fruit tree when she sold the house. It’s your tree now. NTJ.

biggest-damn-potato − It really hurt, leaving my little fruit orchard and asparagus bed when I sold my first house to some real f**kwits

who cut the trees and tilled up the asparagus for more lawn. You know what I did about it? Nothing, because it was no longer my house.

These commenters warned about possible trespassing and property damage, recommending stronger protection measures

MargotFenring − You are going to come home to find your fruit gone. Time to set up a camera.

Due-Yoghurt4916 − We had a woman clipping her old roses off our bush at 2 am.

When we finally called the police after repeatedly asking her to stop she came back and ripped up a few bushes to take home.

9 thousand in damages after she tore up the yard in her truck. They were never her trees.

She can carry on her family traditions with fruit from the local farmers market.

Nip this in the bud now or dont be surprised when her grand daughter has her wedding gazebo delivered to your orchard for her wedding tomorrow.

This level of entitlement will grow and fester. She ended up with three years probation and paid us 25000 for damages and emotional distress

If you bought a home with a meaningful family tree in the yard, would you continue the tradition or would one disappointing visit be enough to close the gate for good? Share your thoughts below.
