Rude Hotel Guests Complain Through Check-In, Then Accidentally Talk Themselves Out of an Upgrade

Hotel check-ins can get hectic fast, especially on a packed summer weekend when nearly every room is occupied and dozens of guests arrive within a few hours. Most people understand that a busy front desk comes with a few procedures. Others somehow manage to turn routine questions into a personal battle.

OP was working a Friday night at a 130-room hotel when one family arrived with two reservations and an attitude almost immediately.

The mother objected to providing two IDs, complained about filling out paperwork, and became increasingly irritated when OP explained that their third-party booking had not supplied all the needed information. Her husband stayed mostly silent, while the tension kept building at the desk.

Then she made a comment about contacting management, apparently unaware of one important detail about the employee standing in front of her. What happened next gave OP a very satisfying way to respond. Read on to see how the check-in ended.

A hotel manager quietly turns a rude family’s potential upgrade into two rooms as far apart as possible

'Sometimes I use my powers for evil'

Sometimes I use the power given to me for evil. But usually it’s justified.

It’s Friday night in the capital city of my state. In the summer. That means an automatic full house for the next 48 hours.

We have 130 rooms total and tonight was special. Out of the 49 check ins we had, everyone was SO kind and patient. Well…almost everyone.

Check ins start. The first hour is coordinated chaos like usual. Long line but moving quickly.

Everyone is cheery and in a great mood! Then the second hour begins.

Almost on the hour, we have a family come in. Father, mother and daughter.

The mother and daughter immediately have an attitude. Why? Not sure. I’m friendly to everyone until they give me a reason not to be.

They have two rooms. I ask for two IDs. One for the adult in each room. IMMEDIATELY they have a problem.

“If I booked both rooms under my name why should we have to give TWO IDs?!”

Because hotel policy maam. She huffs and puffs as she pulls out her id and makes her husband do the same. Then I pull out the paperwork.

We’re a bit behind the times so we make guests fill out physical paperwork.

You would have thought that I asked them to strip buck n__ed in the lobby from their reactions..

“PAPERWORK!? you should have all our information from the reservation we made!!”

So I casually look at how they booked. Of course. Spexedia.

Spexedia doesn’t send us phone numbers or email for reservations. Not sure if that’s normal everywhere but here we don’t get jack.

After telling them they booked with a 3rd party and that they don’t send us the information,

and another two minutes of huffing and puffing, the paperwork is signed.

Mind you the husband has been standing off to the side the entire time not saying a word.

As the wife is handing me the paperwork she makes a quip about contacting the manager to tell them this check in process is unacceptable.

(I’m the manager LOL)

That’s the point that I assigned both rooms as far apart from each other as possible. As I hand them the card to the room I get a f__king EARFUL.

“These rooms aren’t together!? We booked these rooms expecting them to be next to each other!!!”

I look at her deadpan and say, “If you need anything else I’ll be up here until midnight! Thanks for choosing to stay with us!”

Crazy part is that I had one upgrade to give tonight and they were the perfect candidate for a two bedroom.

Instead of an upgrade they bitched their way to a downgrade. F__king people.

Being treated rudely while still being expected to smile can create a peculiar kind of resentment. Frontline workers often have to absorb frustration they did not cause, follow policies they did not create, and remain pleasant while someone treats ordinary procedures like personal insults.

In this hotel manager’s story, one difficult check-in eventually produced a tiny opportunity to push back, and the temptation proved too satisfying to resist.

The family’s frustration began with routine requirements. The mother objected to providing identification for two rooms and complained about completing paperwork after booking through a third party. Neither request appears to have been invented simply to inconvenience her.

What seems to have irritated the manager was the assumption that every inconvenience reflected incompetence, particularly when she threatened to complain to management without realizing she was already speaking to the manager. After dealing pleasantly with dozens of other guests, that hostility probably felt even sharper by comparison.

Still, there is an interesting distinction between understanding the manager’s reaction and declaring it completely justified. Assigning the two rooms far apart was not necessary to enforce hotel policy. It was retaliation, although admittedly a fairly mild and almost comical form of it.

The guest’s behavior did not entitle her to an upgrade, but deliberately worsening her room arrangement transformed the employee from someone enforcing rules into someone quietly settling a personal score.

That temptation makes more sense through the psychology of emotional labor. Sociologist Arlie Hochschild originally used the term to describe jobs requiring workers to regulate or suppress their emotions as part of their professional role.

Verywell Mind explains that customer-facing employees may be expected to remain pleasant even when customers mistreat them, and that continuously managing those reactions can contribute to emotional exhaustion and lower job satisfaction.

Psychology Today similarly notes that dealing with rude or selfish people can be draining and recommends maintaining boundaries and realistic expectations rather than becoming consumed by their behavior.

That helps explain why moving two room assignments probably felt disproportionately rewarding. The manager had little freedom to tell the guest exactly what he thought, but he controlled one small resource: room placement. Exercising that authority restored a sense of agency after an interaction in which he had been expected to tolerate repeated hostility.

The better long-term solution, however, is not necessarily finding increasingly creative ways to punish unpleasant guests. Clear policies should protect employees from abuse while also limiting decisions driven by anger.

Managers can refuse inappropriate demands, document aggressive behavior, and withhold discretionary perks without intentionally creating additional inconvenience.

Perhaps that is the funniest detail here: the guests apparently talked themselves out of the best available outcome. Courtesy would not have guaranteed an upgrade, but hostility certainly gave the manager no reason to offer one.

Service workers may have professional obligations, yet generosity remains discretionary, and people sometimes forget how much smoother life becomes when they treat the person behind the counter like a person.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters praised using discretion to reward decent people and push back on rude guests

ZerTharsus − Correction : you used your power for good.

BunnySlayer64 − You're a rock star. Sometimes you get to give people what they deserve.

BonanzaBert − Excellent way to use your powers. I fail to see how people can react towards other human beings doing their job.

These Redditors agreed that polite customers often receive better treatment than difficult ones

exposed_silver − People don't seem to understand that nice people get treated better than assholes, some people just like to make their lives more difficult.

I try not to please the bad guests too much because I don't want them to come back.

HotelDisastrous288 − It shocks me that people haven't learned to be nice to people that can make your life more difficult through indifference.

I rolled into a hotel at 08:30 after an overnight flight. I figured I would ask about the room but planned on asking to just ditch our bags.

The "guest" in front of me was a giant a__hole having lied on the reservation and actively arguing about policy. After that my request was a dream.

Checked into the room at 08:40. Half day early just for being a normal human.

NocturnalMisanthrope − With that attitude, I'd be temped to cancel the rooms altogether and tell them to hit the road.

And they could have fun trying to deal with the 3rd party as well as try and find another room for the night last minute.

People just can't stop getting in the way of themselves.

These commenters explained why third-party bookings may hide or omit guest contact information

SkwrlTail − Oxpoodia and some of the others have been removing guest information like address and phone number because they keep getting hacked

and hackers will pretend to be the hotel or OTA and say "hey, your payment didn't go through, can we get your card again. .?"

sdrawkcabstiho − Spexedia doesn’t send us phone numbers or email for reservations. Not sure if that’s normal everywhere but here we don’t get jack.

Wait, you mean there isn't a giant commune with 30,000 people living in it at 10190 COVINGTON CROSS RD, LAS VEGAS - 89144 NV , US, Phone 1111111111?

These Redditors compared hotel etiquette to treating service workers well because attitude matters

Borbbb − The equivalent of " dont p__s of the people that cook your food"

Nearby-Yak-4496 − I'm sure that the husband gleefully suggested that the "ladies" share a room. If so you did him a real solid!

Was the manager justified in withholding the upgrade? And was separating the rooms harmless poetic justice, or did that move take the retaliation one step too far?
