Self-Proclaimed Loner Calls His Blind Date “Too Ugly,” Then Complains About Dating Double Standards

in Social Issues

Online dating already requires a certain amount of courage, especially for people who have struggled with confidence or rejection. When two people connect over similar experiences, it can feel refreshing to meet someone who might understand those insecurities instead of judging them.

The original poster responded to a personal ad from a self-described loner who said dating had been difficult because of his appearance. They discovered shared interests, exchanged supportive messages, and agreed to meet without seeing each other first.

At the beginning, the date felt relaxed and surprisingly normal. Then, once the meal was over, the man made a blunt comment about her appearance that completely changed the tone.

What followed was not just a rejection, but an uncomfortable speech about dating standards and double standards. Read on to see why she quickly realized she had avoided a much bigger problem.

not the actual photo

'I went on a date with a self described ‘loner.’ I’m never doing that again'

He posted an ad on the ‘forever alone’ subreddit. He lived relatively close, we had similar interests and like me, struggles in dating.

I responded to his post and we hit it off through text. He said he struggles to date because he is ugly.

I told him ‘same here,’ but I don’t care about looks, just hygiene and being a decent person is enough for me.

He told me he isn’t picky either and asked me out on a date.

I was excited but I didn’t want to get my hopes up because we hadn’t seen each other yet

and I was 100% sure he wouldn’t want to date me after seeing me.

He said we should go on a blind date for the same reason I had.

I told him he was more likely to have a problem with me and not the other way round (from experience)

but he said I don’t have anything to worry about.

Well the date came and it went well at first, just like a normal friendly get together.

When we were done eating, he said (in front of me) that “I’m sorry if this comes off as rude

but you are too ugly for me and I have standards but you have a great personality.”

I was shocked because it came out of nowhere.

There was no indication to me that he was an a__hole, that’s why I agreed to go on a date.

Anyways, I took it like a champ told him okay.

He said ‘good, because men can’t reject women for their looks

but women can and I think that’s a double standard,’ and kept on rambling random internet sayings.

I don’t know what he wanted me to even say to that… I was bummed at first but it became obvious I dodged a bullet.

No, I don’t think all loner guys are like this.. Yes, I’m not meeting people from this site again

Edit: Please stop DMing or asking to see how ugly I am. How is that relevant.

Thank you to those who took the time to leave nice comments

Few experiences sting more than approaching someone with openness, only to have that vulnerability used as an opportunity for humiliation. Rejection is painful on its own, but unnecessary cruelty can make a person question whether their kindness was mistaken for weakness.

In this situation, the OP did not assume that mutual loneliness guaranteed romantic compatibility. She understood that either person might feel no attraction after meeting. What shocked her was the way the man delivered his rejection.

Rather than politely saying that he felt no connection, he insulted her appearance, announced that he had “standards,” and then turned the moment into a speech about supposed unfairness toward men.

The emotional injury came not from being declined, but from realizing that someone who had described himself as misunderstood was willing to make another person feel inferior.

A fresh perspective is that his behavior may have been less about OP’s appearance than about protecting his own fragile self-image. He had already framed himself as undesirable and repeatedly rejected.

By rejecting her first—and doing so harshly—he temporarily moved from the vulnerable position into the powerful one. He could become the judge instead of risking being judged.

That does not excuse his conduct, but it helps explain why people who desperately want acceptance can sometimes behave in ways that guarantee further isolation. Loneliness does not automatically produce empathy; without self-reflection, it can harden into resentment and entitlement.

The American Psychological Association explains that loneliness is often sustained by negative beliefs, mistrust, fear of rejection, and assumptions that one does not belong. Evidence suggests that simply giving lonely people more opportunities to socialize may have limited value unless those underlying thought patterns are also addressed.

Interventions that challenge distorted social beliefs and build emotional skills tend to be more useful. Psychology Today similarly notes that rejection-sensitive people may isolate themselves preemptively, react with hostility to perceived slights, or base their self-worth heavily on other people’s approval.

That insight fits this date closely. The man appeared to carry a ready-made narrative in which women unfairly reject men, and he interpreted the encounter through that grievance before OP had even rejected him.

His insulting comments may have offered momentary control, but they also demonstrated the social behavior that likely contributes to his dating difficulties. His looks were probably not the most concerning issue; contempt, poor emotional regulation, and a need to punish a stranger were.

OP was right to recognize that she had avoided a damaging relationship. Still, the lesson is not that every self-described loner is dangerous or bitter. The more useful warning is to notice whether someone speaks about loneliness with self-awareness or treats it as evidence that an entire group owes them affection.

Rejection can be delivered honestly without degrading anyone. The inability to show that basic kindness says far more about a person than their relationship history ever could.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters called the man cruel, hypocritical, and deeply unattractive inside

frizzybunny − Seems like his real issue is that he's ugly inside and out.

Responsible_Buy5472 − He is a h__ocrite. Don't even worry about it

CraftsArtsVodka − Being a loner wasn't the problem. He was just an a__hole.

fruityiam333 − What a rude pig

These Redditors said lacking attraction is valid, but deliberately humiliating someone is unacceptable

EdwardBigby − I mean it's okay to not want to date someone due to their looks but you feel them

"there wasn't any romantic interest" or "a spark" or at the most blunt "I'm not attracted enough to you"

To say "You're too ugly" is just needlessly cruel. It kind of sounds like this dude just wants to feel sorry for himself

red-sur − This wasn’t about you being too ugly. That was just the excuse he used to tear you down.

It sounds like he wanted to feel powerful by humiliating someone who showed up with honesty and kindness. That’s not r__ection.

That’s cruelty. You definitely dodged a bullet. Well done for giving it a shot, OP.

Strange-Region6370 − This was definitely felt. I used to play a lot of league, met a guy on there.

We played together constantly and flirted quite a bit over text and voice.

Then the pic begging starts, assures me over and over that it'd be fine (despite trying to warn him myself.)

I was feeling confident the next day and sent him a pic while we were in a call together. ..

oh man the silence was defeaning and I still remember the feeling of that. He awkwardly ended the call and we never spoke or played again.

While it's taken quite a bit of time to get my confidence back and being sure I'd never find anyone to love me,

I had finally found the love of my life who compliments me even when I feel at my lowest.

Love comes when you learn to love yourself. Compliment yourself and try avoid giving in to a negative inner voice.

Sorry that lame guy put you through that, take time to build yourself back up but don't be afraid of trying to make a new connection. Good luck out there!

These commenters shared experiences showing why exchanging photos can prevent painful surprises

Famous_Mortgage_697 − As an ugly person, I'm not sure why anyone who thinks they are ugly would ever want to go on a blind date for this reason lol.

I met someone online, a long time ago, and we talked for a year before meeting up.

We still shared pics beforehand though because then you know whether it might be romantic or just friendly.

the-ish-i-say − You know what? F__k that guy. He’s ugly, not you. That really pissed me off.

Who f__king does that? Like my mom used to say, “if you don’t have anything nice to say then shut the f__k up”.

Some people have never heard that apparently.

Aware_Economics4980 − Honestly doubt that you’re that ugly, sounds like a red pilled incel that thinks he’s going to end up with a model.

Was his comment merely clumsy honesty, or did the extra lecture reveal an intentional power play? Should blind dates always exchange photos first, or should basic courtesy make appearance irrelevant to safety? Share the hottest takes below.
