She Asked Her Husband to Stay Out of the Bedroom During Work Hours, and Reddit Had Her Back

Working from home sounds ideal until your home stops feeling like a workplace.

For one woman, that became reality after a family friend moved into her home and took over the room she normally used as an office. What started as a temporary arrangement stretched into several months, forcing her to work wherever she could find a quiet corner. Then her husband lost his job, the friend quit his, and suddenly the house was full of people with nowhere specific to be during the day.

Eventually, she moved her desk into the primary bedroom. It seemed like the obvious solution, until her husband started wandering in and out while she was working. With meetings, distractions, and ADHD making interruptions especially difficult, she finally asked him to stay out during work hours.

Her husband wasn’t thrilled. But was the request really unreasonable?

'AITAH for asking my husband to stay out of our room?'

Our family friend Bob (35M) has been staying with my husband (34M) and I (32F) for over 3 months as he figures out his big move overseas.

He has been staying and working in our guest room / study. I normally WFH full time in that study but for the last few months I have used various...

My husband had a hybrid job, and normally spent 3 days at the office, but was laid off about a month ago. Bob quit his job two weeks ago.

I am now the only person working full time, and we decided to setup a desk in our primary bedroom as my husband & Bob are spending more time in...

Here is where I might be the a__hole — I told my husband that it has been a really tough few months without having my study to work in, and...

Sometimes he will walk in and out during meetings, or start talking to me while I am not muted. I do not want to limit him from his bedroom, but...

I have been diagnosed with ADHD since I was a kid, and I desperately miss my study as its setup in a way that limits distractions for me.

We decided that during lunch & any short breaks I take I will open the door so he can come in and get anything he needs, but I am now...

A Clarification: My husband has only been out of work for a month and it is a tough job market. He spends his days cleaning, cooking, exercising, taking care of...

He is not a lazy man. The company gave him severance so we are not in immediate distress. He is applying to just about anything & everything in his field..

An Update: Bob is moving out in the next two weeks.

She Lost Her Office, and Her Bedroom Became Her Workplace

The woman explained that a family friend, Bob, had been staying with her and her husband for more than three months while preparing for a move overseas. Bob was using their guest room and study, which had normally been her full-time home office.

Instead of having a dedicated workspace, she had spent months moving around the house trying to find somewhere she could work.

Her husband had previously worked a hybrid schedule, but he had been laid off about a month earlier. Bob had also quit his job two weeks before the post. That left her as the only person in the household working full time.

The couple eventually decided to move her desk into their bedroom.

That solved one problem but created another.

Her husband was now home most days, and he would frequently walk into the bedroom while she was working. Sometimes he would start talking to her while she was in a meeting and hadn’t muted her microphone.

For someone with ADHD, those interruptions weren’t simply annoying. They could completely derail her concentration.

She finally explained that she desperately missed having her study and needed somewhere she could work without constant distractions.

Her request was simple: during working hours, she wanted the bedroom to function as her office.

She wasn’t trying to ban her husband from the room completely. She suggested keeping the door open during lunch and short breaks so he could come in and grab anything he needed.

Still, she wondered whether she was being unfair.

Her Husband Wasn’t Actually Sitting Around Doing Nothing

The woman was careful to clarify that her husband wasn’t some unemployed couch potato.

He had only been out of work for about a month and was actively searching in a difficult job market. He was also doing plenty around the house, including cooking, cleaning, exercising, working on projects, taking online classes, gaming, and caring for their children.

The couple also had some financial breathing room because his former employer had provided severance.

So the issue wasn’t really his unemployment.

It was that her job still required her to concentrate for eight hours a day.

And the person currently bringing in the household income needed to be able to do that job effectively.

Bob’s situation was also nearing its end. He was expected to move out within two weeks, which would hopefully restore some of the household’s normal rhythm.

The Psychology of Needing a Clear Work Boundary

Work-from-home boundaries can be surprisingly difficult because the physical environment constantly sends mixed signals. Organizational psychologist Adam Grant has written extensively about the importance of separating work and personal life, particularly when working remotely. Creating deliberate boundaries can help people switch between roles rather than feeling as though they are permanently “at work.”

That idea fits this situation particularly well. The woman wasn’t asking her husband to disappear from her life. She was trying to create a predictable period in which her brain could focus on one task.

For someone with ADHD, that consistency can matter even more. A quick interruption may take only seconds, but getting concentration back can take considerably longer.

The important distinction is that a boundary isn’t necessarily a rejection. Sometimes it’s simply a way of saying, “I need this space so I can function.”

And in this case, she wasn’t asking for the entire house. She was asking for one room during her working hours.

Here's the comments of Reddit users:

Most commenters thought the request was completely reasonable.

Snowbirdy − NTA. You need to be functional for work and Bob needs to move out.

Disastrous_Honey_240 − NTA and he should know better than to bother you while you’re working.

Awkward_Material − NTA Someone needs to pay the bills, and you need to keep your sanity to do it.

Turtle_rocks_19 − Friend needs to move out and leech on others. Husband need to find a job. Edit and take ur study room back to work n lock the door....

Impressive_Moment786 − NTA-as the only working person in the house, I think you can take the bedroom to work in.

KeyAdministration569 − The part I don’t understand is why you gave up working from your office. Does Bob need to sleep in the bed all day?

I have stayed as a guest in many people’s homes where the guest room is also the home office, and I think it’s very common for your guest to spend...

only using the office/guestroom for sleeping at night. I’m confused why you can’t use the office during your work hours.

Several pointed out that she was currently the only person working full time, meaning protecting her ability to earn money should be a household priority.

AubergineForestGreen − What are these two grown men doing about getting a job? They better be taking over the cooking and cleaning. OP be careful. Please make sure you have...

shyfidelity − Of course you’re NTA. It doesn’t sound like anyone is accusing you of being unreasonable

gregaustex − NTA. Very reasonable expectation. No ADHD required.

RealHoney4486 − You are at work! NTA. He wouldn't just walk into your office for a chat, why on earth would he think it's ok to do that when you...

Final Thoughts

This doesn’t sound like a wife trying to control her unemployed husband. It sounds like a temporary housing arrangement created a permanent workspace problem, and she finally needed to draw a line.

Her husband can walk into the bedroom whenever he wants outside working hours. During meetings, though, “I need quiet” is a pretty reasonable request.

Sometimes the least dramatic boundary is simply the one that lets everyone else get on with their day.
