She Brought Desserts to a Party, Then Found Out the Host Was Saving Them for Later

Bringing dessert to a friend’s party seems like an easy way to help. That was what she thought when her close friend hosted an end-of-summer celebration for 32 people at her new home. She volunteered to handle dessert and bought 24 cupcakes, 24 petit fours, and a large flower-themed cheese and fruit tart.

There was only one problem. Four hours into the party, most of the desserts were still hidden away. When she finally put them out, she thought she was simply doing what she had promised. Her friend saw it very differently.

She Brought Desserts to a Party, Then Found Out the Host Was Saving Them for Later

Here’s how it all unfolded.

'AITAH for offering guests food at a party I wasn’t hosting?'

Close friend has a yearly end of summer party, usually at a venue. She recently moved to a new house with a huge yard and so decided to do a...

She decided to do potluck style but all “catered.” Probably the wrong word here but everything was to be pre-made, no one was supposed to cook anything.

There were 32 people attending. I offered to buy desserts. I bought 24 cupcakes and 24 petit fours and a large cheese and fruit tart.

Half-way through the party I noticed she only brought out the tart. I asked and she said she was waiting to bring the other desserts out when most of the...

I honestly forgot about it until I heard someone ask “wasn’t there supposed to be cake?” Because I initially said I would bring cake in the group chat (the group...

People had been going in and out of the kitchen all afternoon but I had stayed mostly outside. Went to check and had to finally look in the butler’s pantry...

The party had been going on for 4 hours by then. Most people were done eating so I took out the cakes, put them on the kitchen island and announced...

She didn’t speak or react but then pulled me aside later before I left and asked where I got the cakes because they were “so good!” I told her it’s...

She then says but “[location] is too far,” which means she already read the card before asking me. She asks if I could buy more and bring it over tomorrow...

Mind you, I live (and the bakery) about 2 and half hours away. I apologized and said I wasn’t able to drive back tomorrow and the store requires large orders...

Thought that was the end but then she messages me later that night that as the host, she really didn’t appreciate me going into her pantry and bringing the cakes...

I read it on my home screen to keep it from showing read and didn’t respond until the next day. I thumbs up her message and said sorry for the...

I am more than ready to accept being the AH here but I think when people bring food to a party, they are bringing it for the party, not the...

To me this isn’t the same situation as giving someone a gift then telling them how and when to use it (she insinuated this in another message).

TLDR - I bought food to a party then put it out and offered it to guests when it seemed the host wouldn’t.

About four hours into the party, the guest heard someone ask whether there was supposed to be cake. She checked the kitchen and discovered that only the tart had been served.

She eventually looked inside the butler’s pantry refrigerator and found the cupcakes and petit fours still there. The host had planned to wait until most of the food was gone before bringing out the other desserts. By then, most people were already finished eating.

So the guest took the cakes out, placed them on the kitchen island, and told everyone they were available. She simply put out the food she had purchased for the party.

Later, before leaving, the host asked where the desserts came from because they were “so good.” The guest pointed to the bakery information taped to the boxes. The host then admitted she had hoped to save some for the children’s party happening the next day because people had gone back for seconds.

Then came the awkward part. She asked the guest to drive back to the bakery and buy more.

The guest lived two and a half hours away, and the bakery required large orders in advance. She declined.

That night, the host sent another message. She said that, as the host, she did not appreciate the guest going into her pantry and putting the desserts out without permission. According to her, the plan had been to serve coffee and cake inside after the backyard portion of the party ended.

The next morning, the guest responded with a thumbs-up and explained that she had fallen asleep after the drive home.

Was she wrong?

Psychologist and University of Toronto researcher Mariana Bockarova, Ph.D., writes that friendships often come with expectations of support, respect, loyalty, honesty, and reciprocity. When those expectations are violated, people can feel betrayed, exploited, or taken for granted, especially when they believe their goodwill is being used without mutual consideration. Psychology Today: Friendship Betrayal

That idea fits this situation. The guest believed her desserts were a contribution to the party. The host apparently viewed at least some of them as something she could control and reserve for another event. Neither expectation was clearly communicated, and that mismatch turned a simple dessert decision into a friendship dispute.

The host has one fair point. A host generally gets to decide how food is served in their own home, and going into a pantry without asking could feel intrusive. But the guest bought the desserts for this gathering, and other guests were already expecting them. Once the host revealed she wanted to save them for another party, her reaction became harder to understand.

The guest could have asked one more time. The host could have explained the coffee-and-cake plan. A quick conversation might have prevented this.

Let's dive into the reactions from Reddit:

Commenters believed the host was holding back the desserts for the children’s party, while others focused on how unreasonable it was to ask someone to make a five-hour round trip for replacements.

SwanCityDominion − Sounds like she wanted to keep the cakes for herself. I wouldn't bring any more food to her parties.

ObjectiveRepulsive18 − Obviously she planned to take advantage of the free cake to use at her party the next day. You just foiled her plan to be cheap. Don’t think...

VallettaR − To be honest, this woman made a LOT of hosting errors and sounds like a chaos agent. A "potluck" is nothing like "catered". And then hiding the guests'...

superdooperdutch − NTA - sounds like she was trying to save the cakes for her next party. I bet she wouldn't have brought them out at all if she could...

Shivs_baby − NTA at all. She was hoping to not serve what you brought so she could recycle it for her kiddie party the next day.

That’s a lot of nerve and I would’ve called her out (but that’s me). And she has a lot of nerve to ask you to bring more when you live...

JMarchPineville − She’s pissed off because she had other plans for those cakes and had no intention to serve them. She’s being a s__t host. You were being generous. NTA.

Several also found the “potluck” arrangement confusing.

tambamspankyoumaam − NTA. She was trying to horde the good stuff - this was her way of having her friends cater for her kids party the next day. You bought...

AnUnexpectedUnicorn − NTA. What the heck? ? She wanted to save back food you brought for a different party you would not even be attending? ? How rude!

sweets4n6 − NTA. She was going to save the cakes for the kids party the next day and had no intention of putting them out.

I know as a host you're not obliged to put out everything someone brings (like wine, etc. ) but you had already let everyone know you were bringing cake and...

If she was really planning a coffee and cake thing later she would have said so.

tiggergirluk76 − NTA. She was planning on keeping the cakes for the event the folliwing day, and she was hoping you'd forget about them. You brought them for the garden...

In the end, this was less about cake than expectations. The guest saw her desserts as a contribution. The host saw them as something she could manage and potentially keep. Neither side made that distinction clear.

Still, asking a friend who lives hours away to replace desserts that had already been bought for the party was a difficult request to defend. The guest may have crossed a small hosting boundary, but the host’s reaction made the situation much bigger than it needed to be.

Sometimes the easiest way to avoid a friendship fight is also the simplest: if you want to save the cupcakes for tomorrow, say so before everyone starts eating today. Otherwise, don’t be surprised when the guests assume the food is actually for the party.
