She Kept Her Best Friend’s Email Logged In for a Year, Then Reddit Told Her How Creepy It Was

There are some secrets people keep because they are ashamed of them. Then there are the ones they barely realize are secrets until someone else says them out loud.

That was the uncomfortable realization facing a woman who discovered she had kept her best friend’s email account logged into her phone for roughly a year. It had started innocently enough. Her friend had needed access to the account when she did not have her own phone, so the woman logged in to help her. She promised she would log out afterward.

She forgot.

The problem was that she eventually noticed the notifications and, instead of immediately removing the account, started enjoying the accidental window into her friend’s life. She knew about shopping orders, food deliveries, calendar events, and other everyday details.

Then she admitted something even more uncomfortable: she liked it.

Not the actual photo

'I've had my best friends email logged into my phone for a year?'

So as the time suggests, I have her email logged into my phone from when she needed it on my phone during a time she didn't have her phone or...

I told her I'd log out but honestly I completely forgot and wasn't even aware until I started getting notifications.

Idk why I haven't removed her email but I just want to keep tabs on what she's doing I suppose? Like I see her shein orders coming through, food she's...

I don't explicitly explore her account but it's just there on my phone. At times it's messed up with my calendars like I've had her events on my dates and...

I know I should remove it but it's a guilty pleasure of mine I suppose? It's fun to see what she's up to

UPDATE: I realized that's actually pretty weird and I didn't even know it at first, I betrayed her trust and that's horrible to do. I would apologize to her but...

It Started as Forgetfulness, Then Became a Guilty Pleasure

There was even evidence that the two accounts were becoming tangled. Her friend’s calendar events sometimes appeared alongside her own, and some contacts had started showing up on the friend’s phone too.

That should have been enough to make the situation obvious. The account was not hers, the access was no longer necessary, and the original reason for keeping it had disappeared long ago.

Instead, she described the situation as a guilty pleasure. She liked having this strange little window into her friend’s life, even though she knew she should remove it.

That distinction matters. Forgetting to log out is one thing. Realizing months later that you still have access, noticing private information arrive, and choosing to keep the account because you enjoy the information is something else entirely.

The woman seemed to recognize that only after writing the situation out and seeing how it sounded from the outside.

Reddit Had a Very Quick Reality Check

The comments were not exactly gentle, but most were clear about why the behavior crossed a line.

One commenter pointed out that the friend had trusted her twice: first by allowing her to log into the account, and then by trusting her promise to log out. Another simply told her to stop before the situation became something she could not easily undo.

Several people called the behavior creepy or controlling. One commenter offered a more forgiving interpretation, suggesting that she could simply log out, give a brief apology if necessary, and move forward, assuming there was no deeper pattern of monitoring or controlling her friend.

That was probably the most important distinction in the entire discussion. The question was not whether accidentally seeing a notification makes someone a terrible friend. It was what she chose to do after realizing the account was still there.

Psychologist Eileen Kennedy-Moore, Ph.D., writes in Psychology Today that trust is a central part of friendship and includes confidence that a friend will keep private information private. She also notes that people inevitably disappoint one another, and that healthy friendships often survive mistakes when the people involved acknowledge what happened and work through it.

That idea fits this situation surprisingly well. The original mistake was forgetting to log out. The more serious problem was recognizing the accidental access and treating it as entertainment. Privacy does not disappear simply because information happens to arrive conveniently on someone’s screen.

The woman eventually reached that conclusion herself. In an update, she admitted that what she had done was weird and that she had betrayed her friend’s trust. She also said something telling: she wanted to apologize, but did not want her friend to ever find out.

That is where the situation becomes uncomfortable. Wanting to avoid hurting someone is understandable. Wanting to avoid consequences for something you know was wrong is different.

She Finally Logged Out

The good news is that she did eventually do the obvious thing. She logged out.

It does not erase the year of unauthorized access, and it does not guarantee that her friend would be comfortable if she knew. But recognizing the problem and ending it is still better than continuing simply because the information was interesting.

Friendship depends on a strange balance. People can be incredibly close while still having parts of their lives that belong only to them. Being someone’s best friend does not automatically make their email, purchases, calendar, contacts, or private messages communal property.

And maybe that was the biggest lesson Reddit gave her. Curiosity is human. Boundaries are what you do with it.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

Appropriate-Law-9643 − Yeah she trusted you as her friend to log in on your phone. And she trusted you to log her out.

But you didnt. And you're not only still not doing it but finding it a guilty pleasure even though you know you should remove it? I feel sorry for her...

scifichick119 − Stop. You are playing a dangerous game mentally that you will lose. Log out. Stop.

Careless_Stretch4797 − Yikes. A friend who does this to me is no longer a friend.

evolving_desires − FWIW , just log her out. Tell her you forgot about it until one day it starting messing with your calendar. As long as this isn’t some weird...

brattylilgynger − Honestly creepy as hell

EmergencyAd1253 − You're pretty controlling and I don't think you realize yet

senorfresco − Yeah, this is very weird. Log out of it and take it to the grave.

Substantial-Radish88 − That’s so creepy

wishingforarainyday − This is totally creepy behavior.

Jealous-Road527 − This is very creepy and strange

Final Thoughts

Was this a creepy betrayal? Most Redditors clearly thought so. But there is also something encouraging in the update. The woman did not double down or invent excuses once people pointed out what was wrong. She admitted it, logged out, and recognized that her friend’s trust had been mishandled.

The real test now is simple. She can respect the boundary she should have respected a year ago and leave her friend’s private life alone.

Sometimes growing up means realizing that just because you can see something does not mean you are entitled to know it.
