She Kept Suggesting Restaurants with Metal Detectors, and Her Armed Nephew Finally Asked Why

in Social Issues

Some family conflicts hide behind something much smaller than they actually are. For one woman, that something was a Glock 17 with two spare magazines, worn openly to birthday parties and Sunday brunch by her adult nephew.

On the surface it looked like a disagreement about guns. Underneath, it was about an irrevocable family trust, a family LLC, and a man who wanted a bigger piece of both. She had spent two years quietly steering every meetup toward venues with security guards and metal detectors, hoping to avoid the conversation entirely. Then he asked her to lunch to hand over some paperwork, and everything came to a head at once.

She Kept Suggesting Restaurants with Metal Detectors, and Her Armed Nephew Finally Asked Why

Here is how it all unfolded.

'AITAH for Only Suggesting Locations with Metal Detectors and Security to Meet with My Nephew who Open Carry Firearms?'

I have an adult nephew who visibly carries a Glock 17 and two spare clip on a waist holster system pretty much everywhere he goes.

It's pretty conspicuous and he insists on doing this for things as mundane as Sunday brunch, kids birthday parties, or a barbecue with mixed company.

Early on I've asked him about it, what his safety practices were and he does keep a round chambered at all times when he's carrying.

At best, it draws a lot of unwanted scrutiny to family events and I believe it introduces risk to family functions, kids ask about it and on occasion he'll take...

At worst he's indirectly intimidating family members, there's a lot of financial enmeshment within my extended family and some petty squabbles regarding money, business deals, and money owed, etc...

I've asked him directly if he can leave his guns at home or in the car and not arrive at family functions armed like John Wick.

He responded by saying Houston is a high crime city and open carry is an effective deterrent to gun violence.

I have tried to indirectly mitigate the issue by suggesting places that I know either have a security perimeter (Museums, religious centers, larger event venues, etc...)

or places that have an explicit weapons ban and off-duty HPD officers working security at the entrance. In the absence of that I don't attend family events.

After the third instance of him being denied entry and having to place his weapon in his vehicle he's asking me why I'm always suggesting places that don't allow guns.

My response was why does he need to bring a gun and 50+ rounds to a toddler's birthday party?

In the most recent instance, he asked me out for lunch and requested some physical copies of some documents related to a family trust and LLCs. I told him to...

They denied him entry and he didn't want to leave his firearm in the parking lot so he asked me to meet him somewhere else nearby.

I told him that didn't work for me and to meet me at the cantina or I would be leaving after 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes I paid and got ready to leave but saw through the window that his car was in the parking lot idling

so I left through the rear entrance got called an Uber from a neighboring shop and went home. Once home I sent him digital copies of what he requested.

Later that day he tried to drop by my house but was unable to gain entry into the community I lived in, there's a security guard booth

and it's difficult to sneak behind a car. Afterwards my sister started texting me asking what was up and why I was being weird about her son open carrying and

refusing to meet him. She accused me of making everyone believe he's a dangerous person.

It's gotten to the point where I've gone low contact with that side of the family and have started avoiding events or gatherings altogether where he is likely to be...

So AITAH?. Some additional updates to address recurring comments and questions:

1. Him letting kids/family members handle his gun at events.

To my knowledge and observation he's never actually let minors hold his gun when he has unholstered it.

He does let them touch it on occasion, and there has been at least two instances where kids approached him and touched his holster and/or utility belt while he was...

2. My 50+ ammo comment, my understanding is his Glock holds 17 bullets in the magazine, with two spare magazines and one in the chamber he has 52 rounds on...

3. Like others have mentioned I could have simply mailed, emailed or texted him the documents he wanted, that would have been my preference but he was using the documents...

In hindsight each of the things he wanted to talk about would have been a hard no from me. That other stuff falls into two categories below:

4. **Family Trust:** there is an irrevocable family trust of which I am a co-trustee of, the other trustee is a firm retained to handle the actual administration, bookkeeping, and...

All of the biologicial grandchildren of my parents are beneficiaries, the trust is currently structured so that grandchildren receive unequal shares determined by their branch of the family (per stirpes...

a grandchild who is an only child gets a full share, a grandchild with one sibling gets a half share, a grandchild with two siblings gets a third of a...

He's been advocating to amend the trust so that distributions are split equally among all of the grandkids (per capita shares) which would more than double the amount of money...

What he proposes is possible but would require all beneficiaries to sign off on the amendment which is unlikely but he has gotten almost all of them to commit to...

Part of what he wanted to discuss with me in person about was amending the trust to that effect and also adding him as either co-trustee or successor trustee to...

5. Family LLC: there is a separate family LLC tangent to the trust that's currently active that nephew is not directly involved in but does indirectly benefit from. He's been...

I'm privy to some of the details and receive monthly financial statements and he's been wanting access to those but he is not entitled to them.

Separate from that LLC there are several others that's more narrow in scope and less lucrative but essentially the same thing just earlier in the timeline, he wants in on...

6. Past behavior: Separate from the whole open carry question, which is a pretty recent development (about two years) there are prior reasons as to why I'm wary of my...

He has defrauded members of the extended family in the past, stolen large amounts of cash and jewelry from my parents (his grandparents), and demonstrated compulsive lying (going to college,...

that doesn't hold up to scrutiny. When confronted on these antics he'll utilize denial, guilt, and tell panic lies to shift attention away from his behaviors.

There's been no legal consequence of anything that he's done but as a result I've avoided any one-on-one dealings with him without third parties present as an independent witness.

7. As to whether or not I'm actually concerned about being gunned down by my nephew or getting shot in general? Not particularly, it's just more of a broad anxiety...

I have to keep kids in my peripheral vision, and halfway expecting the sound of a discharge to happen at any second, also you can feel people look at you...

8. Why do I even interact with him if this is the case? If I want to have a relationship with my extended he's part of the picture regardless. If...

There's a lot of recognized enmeshment and co-dependencies within my family and also a lot of estrangement between individuals and entire branches of the family to the extent that certain...

or dates requires two or three separate events that are either staggered to allow family members to attend multiple events or compete directly with each other. I'm not keen on...

but don't see a huge family reunion any time soon.

9. I've contacted the firm(s) that manages the trust and LLC(s) to loop everyone in on the specific requests. They'll be running interference going forward.

We'll probably add a more distant member of the family that lives out of state to serve as either an additional co-trustee or successor.

The woman’s nephew had been open carrying for about two years, insisting it was a reasonable response to living in a high crime city. She saw it differently. Kids at family gatherings would ask about the gun, and on more than one occasion he pulled it out to show them, chambered round and all. She tried talking to him directly, then tried a workaround instead, quietly picking restaurants and venues with weapons bans and off duty police at the door. It worked, sort of. He kept getting turned away at the entrance, kept having to leave his gun in the car, and eventually asked her why she never picked anywhere he could actually carry.

The real flashpoint came when he wanted to meet in person to hand over trust documents. She chose a sports bar with metal detectors again. He got denied entry, refused to leave the gun in his car, and asked her to move the meeting somewhere else. She held firm, gave him thirty minutes, then left out the back when he didn’t show. He later tried showing up at her gated community and couldn’t get past the guard booth either. Her sister texted soon after, accusing her of making the whole family think her son was dangerous.

What the original post left out at first, and what the update filled in, is that the real tension was never really about the firearm. There is an irrevocable family trust that currently pays out unequally based on how many siblings each grandchild has, and the nephew has been quietly lobbying cousins to change it to equal shares, a move that would more than double his own payout while shrinking everyone else’s. He has also been pushing to join a family LLC he currently has no legal claim to. The lunch meeting was never really about paperwork. It was an opening to negotiate both.

Financial therapist Brad Klontz, who first coined the term financial enmeshment, has described what happens when money, family roles, and emotional pressure blur together inside a household. Writing about the pattern, Klontz explained that enmeshment shows up as a breakdown of the ordinary boundaries between what belongs to whom, often leaving one party feeling entitled to access, information, or resources that were never actually theirs to claim.

That framing lines up closely with what was happening here. The nephew was not simply asking to talk business. He was pressing on a boundary that had already been drawn for him, using persistence, guilt, and a documented history of financial dishonesty to try to widen it. Seen that way, the aunt’s insistence on secure, neutral venues was never really about fearing gun violence. It was a low key way of controlling the terms of every interaction with someone who had a track record of not respecting terms at all.

That reframes the whole standoff. The open carry disagreement gave both of them a legible, defensible reason to avoid each other, when the actual issue was a man testing how far he could push into money that was never structured to be his. Once the trust’s outside firm got looped in and agreed to run interference, the aunt finally had backup that did not depend on restaurant floor plans.

Here's what people had to say to OP:

Reddit had plenty to say about this one. Commenters overwhelmingly sided with the aunt, several pointing out that handing a loaded firearm to curious children at a party is disqualifying on its own, regardless of any trust dispute.

Noligarchio − NTA especially if he's dumb enough to be showing it to children without removing the mag and clearing the chamber he's not responsible enough to own a gunmuch...

CatsMom4Ever − NTA.   I love your petty tactics. He's trying to prove what a manly man he is and you're calling him on it.

JohnCalvinSmith − ". ..he'll take his gun out and show it to them with a round chambered. .." Nope.

NOPE and N O P E NTA He has shown again and again his complete lack of concern for the safety of others let alone for their feelings or concerns...

He is nothing but a big middle-finger stuck up in the face of anyone and everyone he encounters.

A few gun owners in the thread went further, arguing that visibly open carrying to a toddler’s birthday says more about ego than personal safety. The general verdict landed somewhere between sympathetic and mildly astonished that this needed to be litigated on Reddit at all.

Street-Substance2548 − Low contact sounds apropos. Your sister is a jerk for questioning your healthy skepticism of a guy with obvious size adequacy issues. Is he a wannabe military or...

My brother is a born again Texan who has the same issues and open carries as well. He also has depression and takes meds but won’t go to therapy. Nice...

RaymondBeaumont − i would not let someone so insecure and scared that he needs his shooty shoot with him wherever he goes near me or my children.

Tacodelmar1 − “She accused me of making everyone believe he’s a dangerous person” You’re not doing that, he’s doing that to himself. He **IS** a dangerous person. What a loser.

FormerlyDK − Hey, I feel special. I’ve lived 77 years without a weapon, I never felt like I needed one, and I’m still alive.

fordag − NTA kids ask about it and on occasion he'll take his gun out and show it to them with a round chambered. This is absolutely inappropriate behavior.

I carry a pistol, everywhere I go, concealed. If someone knows me there is a small chance that they know I carry a gun, specifically family and close friends, who...

If they want to see my pistol they come to the range with me. i do not pull it out in front of others to show it to *anyone*.

I also clear the weapon before handing it to anyone at the range. He responded by saying Houston is a high crime city and open carry is an effective deterrent...

Also incorrect, it makes you a target. There are videos on YouTube of guys open carrying and someone walking up behind them and taking their gun. In Texas permit less...

Permitless Carry: Legal for open or concealed carry if you are 21 or older and legally eligible to own a firearm. Your nephew is deliberately being an i__ot.

Also yes he's almost certainly doing it to intimidate people. Would I conceal carry to a toddler's birthday party? Yes, absolutely and I have on several occasions. However no one...

Equivalent_Lemon_319 − “kids ask about it and on occasion he'll take his gun out and show it to them with a round chambered. “ Oh christ. NTA

MoralityOverLegality − As a full time gun carrier and someone who believes in carrying it almost everywhere I can I say this. ... why tf do you need or even...

Anyone who open carries is likely to be the 1st target of someone committing a crime. O. P. isn't an a__hole for his handling of this specific situation but the...

It turns out the safest place to meet a relative was never really about metal detectors. It was about making sure a room stayed on her terms, with a history of broken trust standing behind every polite decline. Was this a reasonable boundary dressed up as caution, or has an entire family been avoiding the real argument for two years running?

Visual Illustration Prompt: A quiet upscale sports bar interior near closing time, afternoon light slanting through tinted windows, an empty booth with two untouched glasses of water, a folder of documents left neatly on the table, a security guard visible near a metal detector by the entrance, a car idling just outside in a mostly empty parking lot, the mood tense but still, nothing overtly dramatic, just the sense of a conversation that never happened.
