She Left Her Husband While He Slept After His Family Threatened Her, Then They Blamed Her for the Marriage Falling Apart

in Social Issues

Two months after her wedding, a young woman found herself questioning whether she had somehow become the villain in her own marriage.

She had moved halfway across the country for her husband, leaving behind the only family and home she had ever known. She expected the difficult adjustment of newlywed life. What she did not expect was to discover that her husband had lied about major parts of their future together.

First came the hidden truth about his past alcohol use. Then she discovered that he had invited a former romantic partner to their wedding and continued communicating with her throughout their relationship.

But the biggest shock was still coming. The home and family arrangement she had explicitly rejected before marriage was apparently never what her husband intended to honor.

'Am I wrong for staying in my room while my in-laws were over and later leaving “behind my husband’s back” after being threatened?'

I married my husband two months ago after being together for almost two years. After our wedding, we went on a week long honeymoon.

After that, I moved halfway across the country to his state to start our life together. I had never lived away from my family before.

I had spent my entire life living with them, so suddenly being so far away from everyone I knew was an enormous adjustment for me.

A few days after we got married, I found out that he had lied about his past alcohol use.

I also discovered that he had invited someone he had previously been romantically involved with to our wedding without telling me and had stayed in contact with her throughout our...

He asked for my forgiveness, and promised there would be no more lies.

Before we ever got married, one of the biggest dealbreakers I made clear to my husband from the very beginning was that I did not want to live in a...

This had nothing to do with him or his parents specifically. It was something I had always known I did not want for my marriage, long before I ever met...

He knew how important this was to me and assured me that we would have our own apartment or home and would not be living with his parents.

A few days after moving, I found out that wasn’t actually true. My husband never came to me and told me that the plan had changed or even discussed the...

I found out through his family that they were planning to move into the house with us within a couple of months.

They lived only about 15 minutes away, but they were coming over every single day. I felt heartbroken because my trust had been shattered again.

I had just left everyone I’d ever known, moved halfway across the country, and suddenly realized my husband had spent the past two years lying to my face.

On top of everything, I was incredibly homesick. I had never lived without my family before in my entire life,

and I was struggling emotionally with being so far away from them while trying to adjust to being newly married and living in a completely different state.

Feeling completely o__rwhelmed and homesick, I spent one evening in my room because I needed some time alone to process everything.

His parents were over at our house that evening, as they were every day, and I didn’t come out of the room to spend time with them.

No one came in to check on me that entire evening, not even my husband. According to my husband, me staying in the room while his parents were over was...

He believes that if his parents are over, I should not be sitting in my room and should instead be spending time with them.

The next day, I asked him why he had told me before marriage that we wouldn’t live in a joint family when he knew his family was going to move...

He admitted that he had told me what I wanted to hear because he was afraid he would lose me otherwise.

He apologized and promised me that he would try to delay his parents moving in for a few months so we could have some time to adjust to married life...

Then, the very next day after our private conversation, he went to his parents and told them that I didn’t want to live with them, essentially throwing me under the...

Instead of presenting it as something we had discussed together or mentioning what he had promised me before marriage, the issue became that I was the one who didn’t want...

That led to a huge confrontation where his parents criticized me for staying in my room the previous evening, and for trying to steal their son.

After that confrontation, my MIL called my mother and screamed at her over the phone, saying my parents hadn’t raised me properly,

and started threatening me with divorce, and said my parents are disrespectful because they didn’t call my in-laws after the wedding.

The following week, worried sick about what was going on, my father called my husband and told him that he needed to stand up for his wife.

He also told him that if he my husband didn’t want me and couldn’t protect me, he should tell my father, and my father would come pick me up. My...

About a week later, things escalated even further. My FIL called my father and told him that he either needed to come pick me up or they were going to...

My FIL then told me directly that I needed to leave and threatened that if I didn’t, he would do something “very bad” to me.

My FIL also referred to me as a “used car,” this hurt me so much because my husband is the first man I have ever been with and I waited...

Then my husband also told me I need to go back to my parents place asap.

A day later, I packed my belongings, and my father drove halfway across the country to come get me.

I lied to my husband about the time my father was going to pick me up and ended up leaving the house early morning while my husband was asleep.

Because of everything that had been said to me and because I was afraid the situation could escalate if I tried to leave while he was awake, I called the...

My husband now blames me for leaving “behind his back” and while he was asleep, saying I “broke his trust.”

The last phone call we had, he spent the entire phone call screaming at me, cursing at me, and telling me that my behavior is what turned him into this,...

I found out he filed for divorce a few days after I left with my father. He says I’m incredibly ungrateful because he paid half of my “dream wedding” and...

He believes staying in my room for one evening while his parents were over, being upset about moving away from my family, and struggling with the joint-family arrangement showed that...

I found out through others, that he had fought his parents to marry me. Apparently his parents hate people of my ethnicity because people from my ethnicity are the reason...

Even though we live in the U.S., there is still a very heavy stigma around divorced women in our cultural community, and my husband and his family are using that...

He’s saying that if I want any chance of “reconciliation,” my parents and I need to kneel before them, beg for forgiveness, and pay back the $10k he claims we...

My family spent roughly three times what my husband did on the wedding, but apparently that doesn’t count because, according to him, he gets to decide which expenses count.

At this point, I feel like I’ve been gaslit so much that somehow everything has become my fault. I’m being told that my homesickness was wrong, staying in my room...

my father standing up for me was wrong, and even leaving after I was explicitly told and threatened to leave was wrong.

I keep replaying everything in my head wondering what I could have done differently, because according to him my “reactions and behaviors” are what caused our entire marriage to fall...

Am I wrong for staying in my room for one evening while his parents were over and later leaving my marital home while my husband was asleep after being threatened?

The Promise That Disappeared After the Wedding

Before getting married, the woman had made one thing particularly clear. She did not want to live in a joint-family household.

It wasn’t a criticism of her future in-laws. She simply knew that sharing a home with parents was not the kind of marriage she wanted. Her husband understood that and assured her they would have their own home.

A few days after she moved to his state, she discovered that his parents planned to move in with them within a couple of months.

The revelation devastated her.

His parents already lived nearby, yet they were visiting almost every day. She was also deeply homesick after suddenly moving so far from her own family.

One evening, while her in-laws were visiting, she stayed in her bedroom because she felt overwhelmed and needed space.

Her husband later told her that this was one of the worst things she could have done. In his view, if his parents were in the house, she should have been socializing with them.

The next day, she confronted him about the broken promise.

His explanation was even more painful. He admitted that he had told her what she wanted to hear because he was afraid she would leave him otherwise.

He promised to delay his parents’ move for a few months.

Then he immediately went to his parents and told them that his wife didn’t want them living with them.

Instead of taking responsibility for the promise he had made, he placed the conflict squarely on her shoulders.

The Situation Quickly Became Hostile

His parents confronted her, accusing her of trying to separate their son from them.

Then her mother-in-law called the woman’s mother and screamed at her, criticizing the way she had raised her daughter. She also threatened divorce and complained that the woman’s parents had not properly contacted the in-laws after the wedding.

The woman’s father eventually called her husband and told him that he needed to protect his wife. If he didn’t want her, her father said he would come and get her.

Her husband interpreted that as a threat.

A week later, the situation became much more serious.

Her father-in-law called her father and told him to either come pick her up or they would throw her out.

Then he directly threatened the woman, telling her she needed to leave and warning that something “very bad” could happen if she didn’t.

He also insulted her by calling her a “used car.”

Her husband was sitting beside him.

He said nothing.

Soon afterward, her husband also told her to return to her parents’ home.

At that point, she made a decision.

Leaving Wasn’t About Revenge

The woman arranged for her father to drive across the country to collect her belongings.

She deliberately lied about the pickup time because she was afraid the situation could become worse if her husband was awake when she left.

Early that morning, while he was sleeping, she packed her things and left.

She even contacted the sheriff for an escort while retrieving her belongings.

Afterward, her husband accused her of betraying him by leaving “behind his back.”

He claimed she had broken his trust.

He also blamed her for the collapse of the marriage, arguing that she was ungrateful because he had contributed to her wedding and bought a house for her, even though the property was apparently owned by his parents.

Meanwhile, the family demanded that she and her parents apologize, kneel before them, and repay $10,000 connected to the wedding.

The woman began questioning herself. Had staying in her bedroom been wrong? Had she been unreasonable about living with her in-laws? Was leaving while her husband slept actually a betrayal?

The Reddit commenters overwhelmingly thought the answer was no.

Here's what people had to say to OP:

Several pointed out that her husband had repeatedly lied about important issues, including their living arrangements.

zxylady − You've only been married 2 months, annulment, move back to your hometown and block this douchebag liar. Not wrong

smcivor1982 − YNW, and I’m glad you left before you became a statistic.

wombatIsAngry − Good lord. Get as far away from these people as you can. It might even be possible to get an annulment, since he lied to you so much...

But if not, just get a divorce as soon as possible. You are very wise to involve the Sheriff; these people have threatened violence against you already.

I would recommend that you be very careful; try not to give them info on where you are. Notify the local police where you are; maybe get a restraining order.

Others emphasized that she had been directly threatened, making her decision to involve the sheriff completely understandable.

LittlestEcho − Girl, file no fault divorce. I'd do so ASAP. I'd recommend getting a lawyer. Like now.

I know it seems awful and everything is so fast and you're in the thick of it. But be so very thankful they showed you their colors NOW. His whole...

You know that, deep down, that none of this was your fault either. If your bff had gone through this, prior to meeting you stbx, you know you would've have...

This ISNT a miscommunication issue. HE LIED. DELIBERATELY. OFTEN. HE MANIPULATED YOU.

And your dad, who's is ALSO part of this community, knew this was going to escalate and came to get you. That means you aren't ruined. You're not part of...

Stay gone, mute him for evidence but don't block, and get a lawyer to see about divorce and sign NOTHING until it's been reviewed by your lawyer. Agree to pay...

Several_Leather_9500 − Not wrong. Please see if you can get the marriage annulled as he lied to you. Then you can say you're not divorced, you weren't married.

Another advised her to speak with a lawyer immediately, preserve evidence, and avoid signing or agreeing to anything involving money without legal advice.

AdeptNectarine8704 − You know the answer to this already but sometimes you just need a few hundred strangers to tell you what you already feel in your gut

Staying in your room was the most normal reaction to being lied to about the entire foundation of your marriage. The leaving part wasn't sneaky, it was survival.

You called a sheriff, that's not what someone does when they're being dramatic, that's what someone does when they feel unsafe

The $10k demand and the kneeling request tells you everything you need to know about what kind of family this is. Let the divorce happen and don't look back

g3l33m − Just be glad you don't have any kids with these people. . Let him pay for the divorce and go live your better life somewhere else. .

Dear_Parsnip_6802 − Your husband is not ready for marriage and has no respect for you. I’m glad you escaped.

Tell everyone who will listen that your husband lied to you and is a mommas boy not ready to be an independent man. You were right to leave and your...

I’d rather be single for the rest of my life than be with a man like your husband. Can you look into getting the married annulled instead of divorced because...

ConvivialKat − You are not wrong. And, please, give your Dad a BIG hug from me! !! He is one great father! I don't care what your cultural background is....

Stop worrying about what anyone else thinks. This is your life we're talking about, not some silly soap opera. He lied and his father threatened you. End of marriage.

And please be honest if anyone asks why you left and tell them that he lied to you about pretty much everything and you aren't going to put up with...

You might want to investigate if you can get an annulment instead of a divorce!

chambergambit − YNW. What a *nightmare*.

The hardest part of this story may be how quickly the woman started blaming herself.

When someone is repeatedly told that their reactions caused other people’s behavior, it’s easy to lose perspective. But being homesick isn’t betrayal. Wanting a private home isn’t selfish. Staying in your bedroom for one evening isn’t an attack on your in-laws.

And leaving quietly after being threatened doesn’t automatically make someone dishonest.

Sometimes the safest decision is also the one that looks the most dramatic from the outside.

In this case, the woman had only been married for two months when she discovered that the future she had agreed to was never actually the future her husband intended to give her.

The Reddit community’s message was remarkably consistent: she didn’t destroy the marriage by leaving. She finally stopped allowing other people to decide how much mistreatment she was supposed to tolerate.
