She Quit Her Job to Become a Grandmother Babysitter, But Her Daughter Never Asked Her To

in Social Issues

When this 28-year-old mother’s stepmother decided to retire early, she apparently already had a new job in mind: taking care of her grandchildren.

There was just one problem. Nobody had asked her to do it.

The woman’s stepmother, 60, quit her job a few months ago because she wanted to become the regular caregiver for the woman’s children while she and her husband worked. The plan might have sounded generous on paper, but there had never been a conversation about it. No agreement. No request. Not even a casual, “Would you ever want to babysit?”

The parents already had a childcare arrangement that worked beautifully, with the husband’s mother and grandmother helping with the children.

So when the daughter politely said she wasn’t changing that arrangement, her stepmother and father were furious.

And what started as an unsolicited offer quickly turned into a battle over boundaries, grief, and whether grandchildren should ever be expected to fill an emotional void.

'My stepmother (60F) quit her job to take care of my kids without asking me first and now her and my dad (63M) are angry that I (28F) said no?'

The Babysitting Plan Nobody Asked For

The woman explained that her stepmother had been bored after leaving work and believed becoming an extremely involved grandmother would give her a sense of purpose.

Her father agreed.

According to him, his wife had always wanted to be a mother and had suffered devastating losses. Before marrying him, she had a daughter who was stillborn. Later, during her marriage to the woman’s father, she experienced another late pregnancy loss involving a son.

The father already had three children from a previous relationship, including the 28-year-old woman and her two older brothers. However, none of them considered the stepmother a parent or mother figure.

Now, her father believed the woman’s children could give his wife the opportunity she had always wanted.

He repeatedly emphasized how much love she had to give and how meaningful it would be for her to become the kind of grandmother who cared for the children regularly.

The daughter understood that her stepmother had experienced unimaginable grief.

But understanding someone’s pain is not the same as agreeing to reorganize your family around it.

She and her husband already had childcare they trusted. Their children’s grandmother and great-grandmother were happy to help, and the arrangement worked.

There was simply no reason to replace something that wasn’t broken.

“They Are Not Your Therapy”

The daughter also didn’t have the kind of relationship with her stepmother that would make her comfortable handing over regular childcare responsibilities.

That distinction seemed important.

Her stepmother wasn’t asking for an occasional afternoon with the grandchildren. She had quit her job expecting to become a central part of their daily routine.

And because she had already made that decision without consulting the children’s parents, the daughter felt as though she was being pressured to accept a plan she had never agreed to.

Her father, meanwhile, kept returning to his wife’s feelings.

The daughter tried explaining herself, but the conversation kept circling back to the same argument: her stepmother had lost two children, she had time available, and caring for these grandchildren would supposedly make her happy.

Eventually, the daughter began avoiding calls and ending conversations whenever the subject came up.

She didn’t want to damage her relationship with her father, but she also didn’t know how many times she could say no before someone finally accepted the answer.

And that is where the situation became more complicated.

The Boundary Problem

Family therapists often point out that grandparents can become frustrated when they feel excluded from their adult children’s lives, but healthy grandparent relationships still depend on respecting the parents’ boundaries. The Gottman Institute’s guidance on grandparents specifically recommends acknowledging the underlying desire for connection while maintaining clear limits about parenting and childcare.

Psychology Today similarly notes that conflicts between parents and grandparents can become serious when grandparents repeatedly disregard parenting choices. In those situations, parents may reduce contact when their boundaries aren’t respected.

That doesn’t mean the stepmother’s grief is irrelevant.

Her losses are tragic. Wanting a close relationship with her grandchildren is understandable. She may genuinely believe she is offering something wonderful.

But the emotional reason behind an offer doesn’t automatically make the offer something the recipient has to accept.

The children aren’t responsible for repairing their grandmother’s grief, either.

They are their parents’ children first, not replacements for the children their stepmother lost.

Here's what Redditors had to say:

Many commenters couldn’t understand how the stepmother could quit her job without first asking whether her stepdaughter actually wanted her to provide childcare.

Agile_Supermarket710 − Wild to quit her job on the presumption you'd accept her offer without ever mentioning it 🙃 you have nothing to feel bad about or apologise for, they...

intuitive_scorpio − “The losses Stepmother has endured is unfortunate. However, it’s not my or my children’s responsibility to fill a void for her and it’s an unfair expectation that you’re...

Continuing to push this when I have already expressed my feelings about it, will have me re-thinking what role you both play in our lives. ” Or “Buy stepmother a...

” Depends how harsh you want to be.

papapazuzu − Your kids are not therapy tools. They do not exist to make your stepmother feel better. If you don’t trust her with them, then hold strong on that...

Super weird she did that. Super weird your dad doesn’t see the issue. Sounds like one is a narc and one is an enabler to me. You probably know which...

Laquila − You don't want to hurt your relationship with your dad, but he is a big part of the problem.

He is your step-mother's enabler, supporting her unreasonable, overstepping expectation to be your childcare, and joining in on trying to pressure you to give in. This is all gross manipulation...

Yes, she is probably the main instigator, going ahead and quitting her job to guilt you into giving into her, but he should have stopped her and told her it...

It's sad that she never could have children of her own but she doesn't get to use yours as a do-over or emotional support animal. . He wants you to...

Say a final no to this demand, and tell your father and her that if they bring it up again, you will cut them off for 3 months. No communication...

Kwickpick77 − Tell them your children are not a replacement for her lost children and if they don't drop it they can exit your life.

Others pointed out that the mother’s existing arrangement was working, so there was no reason to change it simply to accommodate someone else’s expectations.

Kathrynlena − “Dad, my kids are not stepmom’s consolation prize. I’m sorry for her losses, but her grief is not my or my children’s responsibility to manage.

If she had bothered to ask me before quitting her job, I would have told her to keep working. Going forward, I will not be discussing this further. If you...

If you bring it up around my children, you will no longer be allowed to have a relationship with them. Do you understand? This is issue is closed. ” And...

Give a single warning, if you want: “Dad, you know that I will have to end the conversation if you bring that up.

Would you like to talk about something else? Yes? ” Conversation moves to something else. “No? Ok, bye dad, I love you! ” Click.

Enforcing the boundary will feel harsh at first, but the more you waffle and waiver, the longer it will take for him to learn.

After only a few (kind, but) firm hangups (no text follow-ups or further explanation afterwards,) he’ll catch on that this topic is off limits.

fgmel − Tell your dad if she wants to nurture someone that they should foster children. There’s so many kids in need in the foster system that it would benefit...

magictubesocksofjoy − soooooo. .. she's never actually had to change blownout diapers or deal with colic or teething but she retired early to play with a baby?

Quiet-Hamster6509 − The next time your dad calls you and starts talking about it. . " Dad stop. Stop this nonsense. I'm sick and tired of this manipulative narrative you...

Our children and not your therapy tools. They are not there to make you feel better about yourselves. They are our children and we will arrange the care we want.

We have repeatedly said no and you still continue to pester and harass us about this. We are this close to reducing contact with you as we have had enough....

cocobeans100 − Tell them if they don’t stop then they won’t be allowed to see the kids any more.

The stepmother may have imagined a beautiful future filled with school pickups, snacks, messy crafts, and afternoons with her grandchildren. That’s understandable.

But imagining that future doesn’t give her the right to create it without the parents’ permission.

The daughter doesn’t appear to be denying her stepmother a relationship with the children. She’s simply refusing to hand over responsibility for their care.

Sometimes the most loving family boundary is also the simplest one: I understand why you want this, but it isn’t what we want.

And no amount of guilt should turn a “no” into a “yes.”
