She Refused to Babysit Again After Her Sister Lied, Now She’s Being Called Selfish

Helping family is usually a given. You step in, you adjust your schedule, you make it work, because that’s what people do for each other.

But what happens when that help gets taken for granted?

For one woman, what started as a favor turned into a breach of trust she hasn’t been able to shake. Now, when her sister needs help again, she’s saying no, and facing backlash for it.

Here’s the original post:

'AITA for refusing to babysit because my sister took advantage of me the last time I did?'

Towards the end of last year my sister reached out to me to help babysit her 4 year old because she was going to be out of state for work.

I’ve helped her many times before but it’s usually a few hours or sometimes morning till night but this was unusual because she never had to travel out for work

before as she mostly works from home right now and she never accepts jobs from out of state because of her child but I didn’t think much of it at...

just thought she believed it was worth it and I had to help her.(she’s a MUA) I accepted even tho it came at a personal cost because I had to...

Now she was supposed to be back by Sunday evening but she called me in the morning to say she won’t be back until Tuesday morning and apologized that she...

This was another inconvenience for me but because I believed she was working I accepted.

I only found out when she got back and came straight to pick her girl, I looked through her bag and none of the stuffs showed any signs of someone...

When I confronted her, she laughed about it and said there really was no difference where she went to

and “aren’t you happy you got to spend days with your niece like you always wanted”. I tried to explain to her it wasn’t about that but she just left.

I didn’t make a big fuss over it again after then and we’ve been good, I still visit them but the problem is last week she told me she got...

not out of state tho and I have said No to her because of what she did the last time.

She showed me that this is real and not what happened before but I still said No she should start looking for a babysitter now that she still has time...

She says I’m being petty and selfish and would rather she turned down a job than help but I think my reaction is valid or am I the a__hole?.

A Favor That Came at a Cost

It started late last year with what sounded like a reasonable request.

Her sister, a makeup artist who mostly works from home, said she needed to travel out of state for work. It was unusual, but not impossible. Opportunities come up, and sometimes you have to take them.

So she agreed to babysit her four-year-old niece.

This wasn’t a small favor. It meant canceling two work appointments, rearranging her schedule, and committing to several days of childcare instead of the usual few hours she was used to helping with.

Still, she stepped up.

Because she trusted her sister.

When Plans Quietly Shift

The agreement was simple.

Her sister would be back by Sunday evening.

But Sunday morning came with a phone call. She wouldn’t be back until Tuesday.

There were “reasons,” apologies, and explanations that sounded urgent enough to accept, even if they caused more inconvenience.

So again, she adjusted.

She stayed longer. She handled the extra days. She kept things going, assuming it was all necessary.

Until the truth came out.

A Joke That Broke Trust

When her sister finally returned, something felt off.

Out of curiosity, she checked her bag. There was no sign of a work trip. No tools, no supplies, nothing that suggested she had actually been working.

When confronted, her sister didn’t deny it.

She laughed.

Said it didn’t really matter where she had gone. Framed it like a harmless switch. Even tried to spin it positively, saying she got to spend time with her niece, something she always wanted anyway.

That response landed badly.

Because it wasn’t about the child.

It was about the lie.

Moving On, But Not Forgetting

She didn’t escalate things.

There was no major argument, no long-term fallout. They stayed on good terms, continued seeing each other, and life moved forward.

But something had changed.

Trust, once broken, doesn’t just reset.

So when her sister came back with another request, this time just one day, not even out of state, the answer was different.

She said no.

When “No” Becomes the Problem

Her sister tried to reassure her.

This time it was real. She even showed proof of the job. It wouldn’t be like before.

But the answer didn’t change.

She suggested her sister find a babysitter instead, especially since she had time to arrange one.

That’s when the tone shifted.

Now she was being called petty. Selfish. Accused of not caring enough to help when it mattered.

But from her perspective, it wasn’t about the day.

It was about what happened before.

The Real Issue Isn’t Babysitting

At its core, this situation isn’t about watching a child for a few hours.

It’s about reliability.

The first time, she wasn’t just inconvenienced. She was misled. She rearranged her work, gave up income, and extended her time based on information that wasn’t true.

And when the truth came out, it wasn’t met with an apology.

It was brushed off.

That changes how future requests are received.

Because trust isn’t just about what someone asks. It’s about whether you believe what they’re telling you.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

Most people were firmly on her side.

The common thread was simple. Her sister lied, extended the arrangement unnecessarily, and showed no real accountability afterward. That kind of behavior has consequences.

n2oc10h12c8h10n402 − Her poor planning (and lies) is not your problem.

People who easily take advantage of others, manipulate, and then cry when they don't get their way should not be counting on favors. NTA.

Stranger0nReddit − NTA. she flat out lied to you about her trip, and then went on to extend it last minute.

She broke your trust, disrespected you, and then tried to play it off like it was no big deal. Like your time doesn't matter. She took advantage of your kindness...

You're not being petty, she's minimizing what she did and trying to dodge accountability. Also, pretty f__king wild to call *the person you are asking for help* petty.

Key-Canary-2513 − NTA. I feel like your initial choice of not babysitting again is the correct one. Your sister being upfront and honest with you is the bare minimum.

Many pointed out that this isn’t pettiness, it’s a boundary. Once trust is broken, it’s reasonable to be cautious about putting yourself in the same position again.

LoveBeach8 − NTA Just like the old story of the boy who cried wolf, you have reason not to believe her and you don't trust her.

It has nothing to do with how much you love your niece and how you want to spend time with her.

You were wrong to go through her things, though, but if you hadn't, you wouldn't have found out the truth.

Don't cave. She is old enough to know that she shouldn't have lied to you then she overstayed her original plan, thus continuing the lie.

You cancelled your previous obligations for her and she took advantage of you. She has a child and it's time for her to grow up and be more responsible.

SafetyFluid8535 − NTA she took advantage of you twice over, putting you out when she didn't really need to and lied about that.

And then again when she extended it last minute, which obviously wasn't necessary since we wasn't working. She's used up all favors she gets

SetIcy438 − NTA. She lied to you about the purpose of the last trip. She lied about when she was returning. In the mean time you had to rearrange your...

You are not petty. She is acting entitled and frankly it would be a cold day in H3ll before I would sit for her again.

Others emphasized that childcare is a responsibility, not a favor to be manipulated. If her sister needs consistent help, she should arrange proper childcare instead of relying on someone she’s already taken advantage of.

Jadeisland − NTA. She took advantage of you and doesn't see a problem with that. It won't be the last time.

miss_chapstick − NTA. You can spend time with your niece without it costing you work, and without having to babysit for your lying sister.

bythebrook88 − Tell her to read her daughter the story of the Boy who cried Wolf.

Top-Put2038 − The trust is broken. A consequence of her own actions. NTA

She helped when it mattered. She adjusted when things changed. And she was met with dishonesty.

Now she’s choosing not to repeat that experience.

So what do you think, is this holding a reasonable boundary, or letting one bad experience define future decisions?
