She Shared Her 180-Pound Weight-Loss Story on Facebook Dating, Then Matched With a Man Who Kept Trying to Prove Her Wrong

When a 21-year-old woman put “losing 180 pounds naturally” on her Facebook Dating profile, she expected it to be a conversation starter. Instead, the man who matched with her immediately began questioning how she had done it.

At first, she tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he was genuinely curious. Maybe his interest in nutrition explained the questions. But the more they talked, the more she felt like he was not trying to understand her achievement. He seemed determined to find something inaccurate about her story.

She eventually decided she was done with the conversation. Still, she wondered whether she had been too sensitive. Reddit, however, had a very different reaction.

Not the actual photo

'Matched on FB dating. Was I being too sensitive?'

So for one of my prompts I added that my greatest achievement was losing 180lbs naturally. That was his first message to me.

I don’t know why but I was kinda put off from the beginning when he didn’t include a simple congratulations or you look great.

He went into asking me questions. I wasn’t bothered by that because I also love learning and hearing about people’s experiences.

I could have been being sensitive but I felt like by his tone he would have argued anything I said about how it wasn’t natural or actual clean eating and...

The last part is only how I feel and I could easily be wrong about his intentions

I want to add this up here because it was lost in the comments I’m 21 and I lost the 180lbs in 2 years.

I added that because some said maybe he just didn’t believe I was telling the truth about it being natural.

Update:. I truly appreciate all the kind words and helpful feedback 💕. His response was simply. “You really missed out this weekend.

We went and looked at some big rocks”. I came to the conclusion he was disrespectful regardless of his intentions and didn’t deserve my time

I was done with him before making this post. I only wanted to see if I was also being disrespectful. I have since deleted my account.

I have nothing against dating sites. I just need to focus on my next steps for my future with it being the end of the semester

Her Weight Loss Was Meant to Be a Proud Achievement

OP had included one major accomplishment on her dating profile: she had lost 180 pounds naturally.

She was only 21 and had accomplished the transformation over roughly two years. It was something she was clearly proud of, and understandably so.

The man she matched with opened the conversation by asking about it.

What bothered her was not necessarily the question itself. She enjoys learning about other people’s experiences and was happy to explain how she had lost the weight.

What felt strange was the tone.

Instead of something simple like “That’s incredible, congratulations,” he immediately started digging into the details. He questioned what she meant by “naturally” and brought up clean eating.

OP began to feel as though he was looking for a contradiction.

She even wondered if his studies in nutrition were influencing the conversation. Maybe, she thought, he wanted to establish himself as the expert and correct her about her own experience.

She admitted that she could have been wrong about his intentions.

That uncertainty was part of what made the situation frustrating.

She did not want to accuse someone of being disrespectful if he was simply curious.

But then his wording made her uncomfortable.

The Conversation Started Feeling More Like a Test

Instead of simply asking questions about her experience, the man seemed increasingly focused on whether her description of her weight loss was technically correct.

OP explained that she had not used medication or surgery and had changed her eating and lifestyle habits.

Rather than accepting her answer, he continued questioning her understanding of nutrition.

At one point, he referred to her as a “silly girl.”

That changed the feeling of the conversation.

What might have initially been interpreted as curiosity now sounded condescending.

One Reddit commenter compared the interaction to the classic situation where someone says they like a particular band and the other person immediately demands that they “name three songs.” The point is no longer learning about the person’s interest. It becomes an attempt to establish superiority.

That seemed to be exactly what OP was worried about.

She started wondering whether he was genuinely interested in her or simply looking for an opportunity to prove that he knew more.

Eventually, she stopped engaging.

She later updated the post, explaining that his response to everything was essentially casual and dismissive. He told her she had “missed out” that weekend because he had gone to look at some “big rocks.”

At that point, OP had made up her mind.

She did not think he deserved any more of her time.

Was It Negging, or Just an Awkward Conversation?

Psychology Today has described “negging” as a form of low-level insult or put-down that can be disguised as humor or casual conversation and may be used to undermine someone’s confidence. More recent guidance on dating red flags also warns that repeated criticism, dismissive remarks, or speaking down to someone can be worth paying attention to early in a relationship.

That does not prove this man was deliberately negging OP.

There simply is not enough information to know what was happening inside his head.

Maybe he genuinely believed he was having an intelligent conversation about nutrition. Maybe he was trying to test whether OP’s weight-loss story was accurate. Or maybe he really was attempting to establish himself as the knowledgeable one.

But OP did not need to solve that mystery before deciding she disliked the interaction.

That is an important part of dating that people sometimes forget. You do not need courtroom-level evidence that someone has bad intentions before deciding you are not interested.

If someone’s communication consistently makes you feel belittled, questioned, or talked down to, you are allowed to walk away.

And OP had already accomplished something significant. Losing 180 pounds over two years required consistency and commitment. She did not need a stranger on a dating app to certify that achievement.

The healthiest response was probably the one she ultimately chose: stop arguing, stop explaining, and move on.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

Several commenters immediately recognized the conversation as potential “negging,” especially because of the man’s repeated questioning and his use of “silly girl.”

_VibeWithHer_ − Nahhhh he was definitely coming off in a weird way. Like he’s questioning you - not because he’s interested but because he wants to catch you in a...

Bitter-Taste-3333 − This is a negging a__hole if I’ve ever seen one. He just wants to “well actually” you…

Dagr0nScaler − This feels like the nutrition equivalent of “oh you like this band? Name three songs”.

And it was the combo of “silly girl” that was diminutive and patronizing, and also his line of questioning would have me asking him the same thing.

Others compared his behavior to someone intentionally trying to catch another person in a contradiction rather than actually listening to them.

pyxis-carinae − just stop talking to anyone who says something disrespectful like "silly girl"

gmr548 − “What’s clean eating? ” “It was disrespect for you to assume I don’t know what clean eating means. ” ? ??

You’re being trolled by a loser. Move on. Don’t use Facebook dating lmao. Didn’t even know that existed.

Laughing_Fenneko − he's negging you, do not engage any further.

Capable_Surround_960 − He was ABSOLUTELY looking for anything he could use as a justification in to telling you that you are wrong. He even put your word “naturally” in to...

Shows his mindset. He was disappointed with your first answer so doubled down by questioning the clean eating aspect, looking for any possible trigger to start teaching you or minimizing...

Party-Veterinarian60 − This guys a complete moron. My only advice - next time after he says, "Silly girl" never respond again. You lower yourself to his level when you engage...

WolverineMental9101 − "I study natural nutrition" could easily mean "I spent time online about this", and I have to wonder if that's the reality of what he means based on...

and I absolutely abhor that he called you "silly girl" like a f__king villain in a Disney movie. Bro can f__k all the way off.

On another note, you did something incredible for yourself and I hope you're really proud.

caitcartwright − Block him right this second if you haven’t already. Dont keep talking to him, for real. I repeat, do not keep talking to him.

Final Thoughts

Dating apps already require enough patience without turning every conversation into an oral exam.

OP may never know whether this man was deliberately disrespectful or simply socially awkward and overly eager to show off what he knows about nutrition. But ultimately, that distinction does not matter much.

She felt uncomfortable. His communication style did not appeal to her. And when she decided she was done, she moved on.

That is not being overly sensitive. Sometimes the biggest dating red flag is simply realizing, very early, “I don’t like how this person makes me feel.”

And honestly, after losing 180 pounds naturally, OP probably has better things to do than defend her achievement to a guy whose best response was a story about looking at big rocks.
