Woman Uses a “Complaints Book” to Serve a Smug Clerk Some Cold, Hard Justice

There are few things more satisfying than watching someone in a position of power, who is being a total jerk, realize they messed with the wrong person. This story, coming all the way from Portugal, is one of those moments.

A woman was just trying to buy a pack of cigarettes when a kiosk worker got creepy with her credit card, refused a simple request, and then broke the law multiple times.

He thought he had all the power. He had no idea he was dealing with someone who knew the system inside and out.

What happened next was a slow-burn revenge that ended in a perfect mic-drop moment:

Refuse service when legally you can't? hope you enjoy the fine 🤣?

I live in Portugal. Here when something happens at a comercial space you write in the complaints book.

My parents own a business which mean I am fairly well informed about how these things work.

I had recently had an encounter at this kiosk with this man and he lingered at my card checking numbers names flipped it over looking at the CVV it was...

Onto the exchange: Me: " Good morning I would like two packs of Winston 100's 26 cigarettes". Him: "It's 12 ,20" ( hand gesture).

Me: "I would prefer to insert the card myself". Him: " You can't do that!".

Me: " I won't touch the machine at all, only insert the card". Him: throws the machine down in disbelief. " I can't let you do that".

Me: "Are you refusing service?". Him: "Yes" I ask for the complaints book, he refused (which legally he can't)

but it was just me and him, I wait until another client shows up and ask for it again.

He relents and gives it to me. As I open it I realize I didn't have a pen (you have to write out your complaint) I ask for one he...

As soon as I open the book I see something wrong. The first complaint is completely ripped out all three pages are.

Under no circumstance is the third page to disappear. Seeing as I had no pen I start the process online.

Take the info and start snapping pictures of the missing pages. As soon as he saw me taking pictures he does a b-line from around the counter to me and...

I said I have every right to keep this book until I'm done with my complaint. He gets huffy and more clients show up. He goes back behind the counter.

The thing about these complaints book is that you write it in ink but then you have to follow through and submit them online to the proper authority.

But I bypassed the ink format and immediately submitted online mentioning the weird analysis of my card, the refusal of service and as the last middle finger...

I also mentioned the missing pages with pictures. After an hour of nicotine withdrawal, of looking the business up the pictures and writing the complaint itself

I hand the book in with no written complaint. He opens it chuckles to himself and smugly says. "Did you give up because you didn't have a pen?"

I say no because I didn't have a pen I decided to submit it directly online and as my last mic drop moment I said I didn't feel comfortable writing...

as the first complaint had magically disappeared. The colour drained from his face because we both knew what would happen.

Even if they don't take the complaint seriously tampering with the book is absolutely taken seriously and

that absolutely will be followed up and fined accordingly. Then I smiled and said I wish I had a pen and left.

You can just feel the smug satisfaction radiating from that final line, can’t you? This wasn’t just about bad customer service. It started with a legitimately creepy moment, the clerk lingering over her credit card details. That alone is enough to set anyone on edge.

But his refusal to let her simply insert her own card escalated the situation from awkward to confrontational. The real power play, however, was his refusal to provide the legally mandated “complaints book.” He was betting on her not knowing the rules. He bet wrong.

When You Know the Rules, You Hold the Power

This story is a fascinating glimpse into a consumer protection system that many of us have never heard of. The “Livro de Reclamações,” or complaints book, is a real and legally binding thing in Portugal. According to the official ePortugal government portal, all providers of goods and services are required by law to have one. Refusing to provide it, or tampering with it, comes with hefty fines.

The OP’s calm, methodical approach was brilliant. She didn’t yell or argue. She just quietly gathered her evidence. The clerk thought he was winning every little battle, the pen, the book, her supposed “giving up.” He had no idea he was just handing her more ammunition for the war he was about to lose.

The initial moment with the credit card was more than just weird; it was a major security red flag. As financial experts at Forbes Advisor warn, any time a clerk is overly interested in the physical details of your card, it could be a sign that they are trying to capture your information for fraudulent purposes. The OP’s instinct to take back control was spot on.

Here’s what the Reddit community had to say:

The entire internet was basically giving this woman a standing ovation.

Unable-Quarter2215 - Hell hath no fury like an addict scorned. Don’t get between me and my nicotine lmao

National_Pension_110 - What an obnoxious person. Glad you were able to exact some petty revenge.

HoneyWyne - I love that your country does this!

blissthismess - That’s so creepy, he definitely wanted to do something shady with your card.

Many users, especially from the US, were fascinated by the concept of a legally-mandated complaints book.

Crafty-Shape2743 - Is this complaint book just a Portugal requirement or is it more widespread? I’ve never heard of anything like it, it sounds interesting.

ANTICONSPIRATORIAL - God I wish we had complaints books in the USA!!!

lumpysale5702 - I just learned way more about the way business is done in Portugal... This book thing is cool -

I wonder how it would play out in NYC… ‘Your bodega cat can’t be on top of the baked goods, give me your book’ ‘F--k off’

Possible_Spinach7227 - 😂wtf a complaints book in businesses? That is tracked by a legal authority? That would never work in America lol every business would be shut down

Other users shared similar systems in their own countries.

[Reddit User] - I was consulting to a hotel in Russia a few years ago. They have the same book with the same rules in Russia.

slackerassftw - I just got back from the Philippines. They had police traffic checkpoint on the road leading into the airport.

They were stopping all of the taxis and the police were handing taxi complaint forms to the passengers.

How to Handle a Situation Like This

While most of us don’t have access to a magical, legally-binding complaints book, the OP’s strategy is universal: stay calm and document everything.

If you are dealing with a hostile or rule-breaking employee, the worst thing you can do is escalate the argument in the moment. Instead, use the one tool you always have on you: your phone. Take photos, record videos (if legal in your area), and make detailed notes of what happened, including the date, time, and names of anyone involved.

Then, go over their head. A well-written, evidence-backed email to a corporate head office or a complaint filed with the Better Business Bureau is far more effective than a screaming match with a clerk who clearly doesn’t care.

In The End…

This clerk thought he was dealing with a powerless customer he could bully. He learned a very expensive lesson: never underestimate someone who knows their rights. That smug little chuckle as he saw the blank book probably cost his employer a fortune.

What do you think? Is the “complaints book” a system other countries should adopt?
