She Wore a Bikini to a “Swimwear” Pool Party, Then the Host Told Her It Was Inappropriate

A pool party with a dress code of “swimwear” seems about as straightforward as invitations get. Bring a swimsuit, enjoy the water, eat some food, and have a good time.

That was exactly what one 31-year-old woman thought when she arrived at a family friend’s pool party wearing a perfectly ordinary bikini.

The weather had been beautiful, the host had a large house and swimming pool, and guests of all ages were invited. Nothing about the invitation suggested that certain types of swimwear were off-limits.

So she wore a bikini. Not a thong, not an unusually revealing two-piece, and not anything she considered inappropriate for swimming. Just a standard bikini that covered what it was supposed to cover.

She spent the party having fun and, as far as she could tell, nobody had a problem with it.

Then, as she was leaving, the host pulled her aside.

Not the actual photo

AITA for wearing a bikini to a pool party with the dress code 'swimwear'

For context I am a 31 year old woman. A family friend has large house with a swimming pool and recently hosted a pool party because we have had such...

I was one of the people invited and the dress code was specified as 'swimwear'.

People would be attending of all ages. I attended wearing a bikini.

I was just a normal bikini, nothing skimpy or anything. It covered everything up, including my b_t. It wasn't a thong bottom.

The party was really fun and everyone seemed to have a great time.

Nobody gave any indication of having a problem with my outfit, although all the other women were wearing one-pieces rather than a bikini.

When I was leaving, the host took my aside and told me that my outfit was completely unacceptable.

I was totally taken aback because I didn't think there was anything wrong with it and nobody seemed to have a problem.

She said I should have known it was unacceptable to weat a bikini because there were teenage boys there and a woman in a bikini is 'distracting' and 'teasing'.

I was really shocked because at no point did I feel like my ourfit was causing any issues

The Bikini Apparently Crossed a Line

According to the woman, the host told her that her outfit had been “completely unacceptable.”

She was stunned.

There had been no warning when she arrived. Nobody had asked her to cover up. No one had made a comment during the party. She hadn’t noticed uncomfortable looks or awkward reactions.

Most importantly, the dress code had simply said “swimwear.”

The host explained that the problem was the teenage boys who had attended the party.

Apparently, she believed the woman should have known that wearing a bikini around teenage boys was inappropriate because, in her words, a woman wearing one could be “distracting” and “teasing.”

That explanation left the woman even more confused.

She hadn’t been trying to attract anyone’s attention. She was at a swimming pool. She wore a swimsuit designed to be worn at a swimming pool.

And now she was somehow being told that her clothing had created a problem simply because teenage boys might notice that she was wearing it.

The situation also raised a much bigger question: why was the responsibility for controlling someone else’s reaction being placed on her?

Was She Supposed to Know the Unwritten Rules?

There is certainly room for hosts to have specific expectations about clothing.

If the host had wanted guests to wear one-piece swimsuits, modest swimwear, or something more conservative, she could have simply said so on the invitation.

“Swimwear” generally covers a wide range of clothing, including bikinis.

The woman also pointed out that the bikini she wore wasn’t particularly revealing. It covered her body appropriately, and she had chosen something she considered completely normal for a pool setting.

The fact that other women at the party happened to wear one-piece swimsuits didn’t necessarily establish a rule.

People have different preferences when it comes to swimwear. Some prefer bikinis. Others prefer one-pieces. Some wear swim shorts, rash guards, tankinis, or other combinations.

Unless guests were explicitly told otherwise, it would be difficult to know that one particular style was secretly considered unacceptable.

What seemed to bother the woman most was the suggestion that she was somehow “teasing” teenage boys simply by wearing a normal swimsuit.

That turned a clothing preference into something much more uncomfortable.

The Real Responsibility Wasn’t Hers

The Reddit commenters were overwhelmingly on her side.

Several pointed out the obvious contradiction: if the dress code was “swimwear,” then a bikini is quite literally swimwear.

One commenter joked that perhaps the host should have specified “prude swimwear” if that was what she actually wanted.

Others focused on the teenage boys.

Their argument was simple. Teenagers are capable of seeing people in normal clothing without that person becoming responsible for their thoughts or behavior. If someone stares or behaves inappropriately, that behavior belongs to the person doing it.

A few commenters suggested that the host’s concern might not actually have been about the teenagers at all.

One person jokingly speculated that perhaps the host was more worried about her own husband noticing the woman.

Whether that was true is impossible to know, but the speculation reflected how strange some commenters found the host’s explanation.

Why This Kind of Expectation Feels So Unfair

The deeper issue here isn’t really about bikinis.

It’s about the expectation that women should anticipate and manage other people’s reactions to their bodies.

The woman wasn’t attending a formal dinner or a religious ceremony with a clearly defined dress code. She was at a pool party where guests were specifically told to wear swimwear.

She followed the instruction.

If the host had a particular standard of modesty, communicating that beforehand would have prevented the entire situation.

Instead, the woman only learned about the supposed rule after spending the entire party unaware that she had done anything wrong.

That puts her in an impossible position. She was expected to understand an expectation that had never actually been communicated.

Here's the comments of Reddit users:

Most commenters considered the woman NTA, pointing out that a bikini is completely normal swimwear and that the host should have been clearer if she wanted something different.

stickbugszz − NTA, they should have specified prude swimwear.

Strong_District_5894 − It was an issue because all she felt insecure about her body. That’s it.   NTA

Barsk-Brunkage − Ehm. ..if a bikini is not swimwear - what the heck is it then? ?.?

Several people objected strongly to the idea that teenage boys needed women to dress differently because they might find them attractive.

Frankensteins_Kid − NTA. Maybe teach the teenage boys not to stare? They also "should've known" that oggling women is "unacceptable".

**ETA**: Reading this back, she was probably worried about her husband or something 😭😭 But it would be less embarrassing to accuse the boys.

SpecialistAuthor4897 − Come on. My oh my, different cultures i guess. . NTA. The "teenage boys", like all people, can deal with exposed skin.

gbroon − NTA. They specified swimwear you turned up in swimwear.

vbandbeer − Nta. At all That’s a pretty disgusting take that women have to cover up so they don’t arouse the boys.

Others took the issue even further, suggesting that the teenagers should simply be taught appropriate behavior rather than being used as a reason to police what women wear.

RepulsiveDig9091 − NTA, her "teenage" brained husband was distracted.

Diligent_Yak1105 − NTA. Women and girls are not responsible for the lustful thoughts of teenage boys and men. A sensible bikini is not inappropriate.

If they are her sons, grandsons, or nephews, your friend needs to teach those boys to behave better.

Otherwise, she can mind her own business about your swimwear. It’s just so gross when women perpetuate internalized misogyny!

TRQ711 − NTA. A bikini is completely valid swimwear. The host sounds like a creep if she thinks her friend was teasing the literal children.

The woman didn’t walk into a business meeting wearing a bikini. She didn’t ignore a clearly stated dress code. She went to a pool party, saw the words “swimwear” on the invitation, and wore a normal bikini.

If the host wanted one-piece swimsuits or more conservative clothing, she had every right to make that preference known.

But expecting guests to read her mind isn’t reasonable.

And blaming a woman’s swimsuit for the possibility that teenage boys might be distracted sends a strange message about who should be responsible for their behavior.

At the very least, this seems like a lesson in the importance of being specific when you’re hosting a party.

“Swimwear” apparently wasn’t specific enough.
