Summary:

  • Despite his talent and extensive contributions, the acting legend from Shōgun has long been overlooked for recognition.
  • However, with his recent role in the acclaimed series and growing praise from fans and critics, it’s clear that he is finally receiving the acknowledgment he deserves.

Earning the title of ‘cinematic legend’ is a significant accomplishment. In the competitive world of showbiz, only a few manage to reach the top and gain widespread acclaim.

Among those deserving recognition are individuals overflowing with talent, yet not receiving the spotlight they deserve. Hiroyuki Sanada, the iconic actor currently starring in the captivating FX and Disney Plus TV series Shōgun, is one of them.

Shōgun is based on James Clavell’s 1970s novel, previously adapted into a popular mini-series in the 1980s.

In the newest version of the story, Sanada portrays the powerful Lord Yoshii Toranaga, inspired by the real-life figure Tokugawa Ieyasu, who influenced Japan’s history in the 17th-century feudal era.

Since its premiere in February, Shōgun has been highly praised by both audiences and critics, accumulating millions of views.

On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts an exceptional 99% approval rating from critics and an audience score of 93% – a remarkable achievement.

The series, hailed as a ‘masterpiece,’ drew in nine million views worldwide on various streaming platforms in its first six days, outperforming the highly popular second season of Jeremy Allen White’s The Bear.

It’s been praised for its epic fight scenes, intense drama, and stellar performances, particularly by Sanada.

Fans and industry insiders have long admired the 63-year-old actor. So, why did it take so long for him to land a major Hollywood role and producer credit in a big-budget blockbuster?

It’s a puzzling question that leaves us scratching our heads.

Since the 1960s, Sanada has been acting, starting as a child. He trained in martial arts from a young age and starred in the Japanese film Shogun’s Samurai in 1978.

In the 1980s, he became known in action cinema in Japan and Hong Kong. He gained international attention with his role in the 1998 film Ring, a supernatural horror that became a cult classic.

He later joined the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of King Lear and received an honorary MBE in 2002 for spreading British culture in Japan.

Over the years, Sanada has become a familiar face on both TV and in movies.

In The Wolverine, he went head-to-head with Hugh Jackman, showcased his impressive skills in John Wick 4, faced off against Jeremy Renner in Avengers: Endgame, and recently joined the stellar cast of the action-packed Bullet Train.

His credits also include roles in Lost, Westworld, Rush Hour 3, Mortal Kombat, The Last Samurai, and more.

Despite his extensive resume and undeniable charisma, many fans are puzzled by his continued status as ‘criminally underrated’ in the industry.

One user on X, @spoooonngggeee, labeled him as one of the most underrated actors and insisted he deserves an Emmy for his role in Shōgun.

Entertainment journalist Shah Shahid criticized the tendency to reduce Sanada to mere cameos in Hollywood blockbusters, emphasizing that he is finally receiving the acclaim he deserves for his role as Toranaga.

Another user, @GLKnightWrite, expressed joy in seeing younger audiences appreciate Sanada’s talents in Shōgun, describing the feeling as indescribable and profound.

As a producer and lead actor in Shōgun, Sanada was dedicated to presenting Japanese culture authentically. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between Japanese and Western crews to avoid stereotypes.

In an interview with USA Today, Sanada expressed how meaningful it was to play such a significant role in Shōgun, now with the title of producer. He felt empowered to contribute more to the project than ever before.

Despite his talent, it’s unfortunate that Sanada’s recognition has been delayed. We believe he deserves more acknowledgment.

If you haven’t seen Shōgun yet, we highly recommend it. It showcases Sanada’s skill and dedication, making it clear why he’s such a respected figure.
