Single Mom Says She’s Out of Options After Her Teen Daughter Stops Caring About Every Consequence

in Social Issues

Sometimes the hardest parenting battles are not loud arguments, but silent standoffs where neither side gives in.

According to this Redditor, she removed her daughter’s phone after repeated refusals to complete chores, expecting the loss of the privilege to encourage better behavior. Instead, her daughter appeared to give up entirely, showing no interest in earning the phone back or responding to additional punishments.

The home has become increasingly chaotic, with the mother taking on all of the household responsibilities while feeling powerless to change the situation. Frustrated and isolated as a single parent, she is searching for advice on how to handle a child who no longer seems motivated by consequences.

'I’ve completely given up on raising my daughter'

I (30F) have completely given up on raising my teenage daughter.

As a single parent, things are already difficult, but this entire situation started with small requests. I asked her to do the dishes, and she refused.

In response, I took her phone away. When she refused to clean her room, I decided to keep the phone until further notice.

The problem is, instead of using the loss of her phone as motivation to complete her tasks and earn it back, she has stopped doing anything at all.

When I asked her why, she simply said, "What’s the point of doing anything?

I don’t have my phone, and taking it isn’t going to make me want to do my chores."

I told her the point is that she needs to learn I won't reward bad behavior.

When she does the right thing, she gets rewarded—in this case, getting her phone back.

But now, things have gotten completely out of hand, and I don't know what to do.

Her room is filthy, looking like something straight out of the show *Hoarders*.

I actually had to clean her bathroom myself because it was so disgusting.

That is the one place I need her to keep clean, since she uses it daily.

If I hadn't stepped in, it would be just as filthy as her bedroom, probably crawling with bugs.

I also have to do all the dishes myself, which is exhausting after coming home from work every single day.

I even canceled her phone plan entirely, and she still won't budge.

I can’t kick her out because she is a minor, but I am completely out of options.

I have tried every form of discipline, and she just doesn’t care.

No matter what consequence I throw at her, she rolls with the punches.

It doesn't matter how much it costs her personally or how it affects her life; she won't listen to anyone.

Even physical discipline doesn't work.

It is exhausting to face this cycle every single day.

My relationship with her father isn't great, so I don't have anyone else to turn to for backup.

I truly feel like I can't keep doing this. What do I do?

Sometimes the moment a parent says, “I have given up,” is not the moment they stop caring. It is the moment exhaustion has swallowed their hope.

A single parent carrying work, household responsibilities, and daily conflict may reach a point where every unfinished chore feels like proof that they have lost control.

That frustration is understandable. However, the teenager’s behavior also suggests something more complicated than simple laziness.

In this situation, the mother and daughter appear trapped in a struggle built around power. The mother sees the phone as a privilege that should encourage responsibility. Her daughter experiences its removal as a reason to stop cooperating entirely.

Once the punishment became indefinite, the original issue, dishes and a dirty room, was overshadowed by a larger contest over who would surrender first. The mother’s anger grew because every consequence failed.

The teenager may now see refusing chores as the only control she has left. Neither is winning, but both may be using resistance to protect themselves from feeling powerless.

Many readers may focus on the daughter’s defiance, yet her statement, “What’s the point of doing anything?”, deserves careful attention. It could be teenage stubbornness, but it may also reflect emotional shutdown, depression, anxiety, executive-function difficulties, or resentment that has become entrenched.

Severe neglect of personal spaces and responsibilities can sometimes indicate that a young person is struggling to function, not merely refusing to obey. Physical punishment may then worsen the conflict because it turns the household into a place of fear and retaliation rather than accountability.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises parents not to hit or spank children. Its guidance explains that physical punishment does not reliably teach responsibility or self-control and may instead increase anger, aggression, and negative behavior.

The Child Mind Institute also notes that apparent defiance can sometimes come from anxiety, depression, trauma, attention difficulties, or other conditions that make ordinary tasks feel overwhelming.

When a teenager’s mood, energy, behavior, or daily functioning changes significantly, professional assessment may be appropriate.

This means the mother’s next step should not be a harsher consequence. She should stop physical discipline immediately and shift from punishment escalation to investigation.

The daughter needs an appointment with a pediatrician or adolescent mental-health professional, especially if she has withdrawn, stopped caring about hygiene, or lost interest in other parts of life.

At home, the family may need a simpler structure: one small daily responsibility, a clear deadline, predictable consequences, and no endless punishments. The mother may also need support from a counselor or parenting service because burnout is making the situation harder to manage.

The deeper question is not who wins the phone argument. It is whether both can step out of the conflict before resentment becomes the foundation of their relationship.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters recommended individual and family therapy to uncover the cause of the conflict

Farris_Edna − Family therapy might be worth a shot before things get worse

DevilishLovers − It sounds like you both aren't communicating outside of arguing over this as well.

Definitely seconding family therapy and also trying to meet your daughter where she's at.

Do you know why she's actually not cleaning or do you think she's just lazy/doesn't want to?

Physical punishment won't do anything besides make her trust you even less.

MalevolentSnail − You all need family therapy to find out what’s going on with her

and also to give you the parenting tools to guide her and find out what lead to this behaviour in the first place.

If you’re striking your child and pondering kicking her out, it sounds like you’ve lacked appropriate parenting tools for a very long time.

MonochromeMaru − She is utterly depressed.

Depressed people struggle with executive disfunction, so of course she isn't responding to punishment or requests to do anything.

She needs therapy and you need family conselling.

I remember being this age and being furious my mother set me up with therapy.

I was terribly depressed and didn't even know it. I didn't feel like I needed to be there!

It ended up being the thing that got my life put back together. I'm almost 30 now, and I'm very grateful.

These Redditors suspected depression and urged the parent to offer emotional support instead of punishment

Gold_Sun_1002 − Is she depressed or just defiant? I wonder where this lack of care comes from.

Do you take an interest in her outside of just asking her to do things?

Do you make an effort to have any sort of fun bonding time together?

Respect and care go both ways, sometimes giving a little will get you a lot in the end…

You mention trying physical punishment… that alone can cause irreparable damage to a child’s trust.

I would prioritize salvaging the relationship long before worrying about getting a chore routine established.

Appleofmyeye444 − I'm a parent of a 2 year old but I know what it's like to be a teenager.

Your daughter sounds depressed. Do what my parents should've done with me and

1. Be emotionally available 2. Get her some therapy Absolutely do not hit your daughter.

If you hit your kids that just teaches them that hitting is fair and they can hit you back (as well as other people).

These users suggested positive reinforcement, shared cleaning, and gradually teaching better habits

lotusblossom60 − Good morning I worked with teenagers for 41 years.

I also had a teenage child at one point that I struggled with. Rewards work better than punishment.

You have dug her this big hole but now she doesn’t care to get out.

When my son was not doing well in school, I told him if he passed all his classes

he would get a reward and we pick something that he wanted that was reasonable.

There are so many ways to approach this that can be nice instead of this argumentative opposition that you are having now.

TheMightyGrimm − Ummm - you’re considering kicking her out? Physical discipline?

I think this post says a lot more about you than it does your daughter.

I have 3 teenage sons and they are slobs but I keep going and keep trying every day.

You kind of have to keep doing this because you’re a parent and giving up isn’t an option.

This_Street6595 − Maybe start by cleaning with her. Slowly build up her skills and you can slowly pull back.

Ok-Lynx-6002 − Based on your post I'm honestly not surprised that she is acting that way

How would you handle a teenager who seems completely indifferent to punishment? At what point should parents shift from discipline to seeking professional support?
