Stranger Asks for One Friendly Conversation, Then Starts Calling Constantly and Insisting She Visit Her Home

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Kindness to a stranger can sometimes create an unexpected connection, especially when that person is lonely and grieving.

But when friendly contact suddenly becomes constant and starts pushing past normal boundaries, it is understandable to feel uneasy even if the person seems harmless.

One 35-year-old woman found herself in that situation after an elderly stranger approached her in a restaurant and asked to talk.

The two spent hours discussing grief, isolation, and family problems, and the poster later walked the 84-year-old safely home.

She also agreed to share her phone number in case the woman needed someone to speak with.

What followed was far more intense than expected, with repeated calls, invitations to her home, and reluctance to meet anywhere public.

Scroll down to see why the poster began wondering whether compassion and caution were starting to collide.

A woman grows uneasy after a lonely elderly stranger she befriended begins calling her constantly

'Elderly woman approached me in a restaurant and I think I’m in a weird situation now…?'

Hi everyone.

I'm a 35 year old female and last Friday I was approached in a restaurant by

an 84 year old woman who asked me if she could sit and talk with me a

while as she was heading out the exit . I said that was fine as I was by

myself too and she looked kind of upset. We spent about 2 hours talking

and she was telling me her husband had died a few months ago and she

can't process the loss and that she thinks she needs psychiatric help. She

said she has a daughter but daughters husband is a very controlling man

who limits the contact they have so very rarely sees her. When we were

leaving the restaurant, it was quite dark at that point so she asked me if I

wouldn't mind walking her back to her home for safety. She only lived a

few streets away so I made sure she was back safely. Then right away she

asked me if I wanted to come in for a drink and cake. I declined because I

have children I needed to be getting back to. Then she asked me if she

could have my number to contact me if she desperately needed someone

to talk to for a while. I agreed and went ahead and put my number in her

phone. I headed back home and literally 15 minutes later , she started

calling me. I didn't answer because I just needed to get home. Then she

rang again 40 mins later . I answered and she just wanted to thank me for

talking and walking her home. Very quick call. Then she phoned me again

an hour later to let me know she's going to bed and to wish me goodnight.

Following day .. called me 8 times in the space of 2 hours . I didn't even

have my phone with me because I was busy with my children. But I called

her back at 7pm to make sure she was alright. She was, but wanted to

make arrangements with me for me to visit her at her home for a drink and

food. I said I couldn't give her a time or date because I'm so busy with my

children and working from home but that I would give her a call when I

could slot her in somewhere this week for a hour or so. She said "that's

fine. I'll wait for you to contact me" . Following day .. constant calls. .. 12 missed calls.

She wants to see me tomorrow at her home and seems quite reluctant to

meet in the same restaurant we first met in, or anywhere else aside from

her home as she says she has very painful legs and also has a lot of anxiety

about leaving her house because of her age and how frail she is.

Like, I know a 4ft 9 , 84 year old woman is very unlikely to be a serial k__ler

lol .. but do you guys think I have good reason to be really cautious here? Or

and I completely blowing this out of proportion and she's a struggling,

lonely woman trying to reach out to someone? She said she'd bake a cake

for when I come over so I'd be eating something that a complete stranger

has offered me. I feel crazy being on edge about this situation given her

age but I do just have this weird niggling gut feeling that something is just

off about it all and she is quite overbearing on me with her calls when she

knows I'm so busy . What do you guys think? Any advice?. Thank you for reading :)

The strongest warning signs in this situation are not necessarily that the woman is dangerous, but that the relationship became intensely dependent almost immediately.

A stranger approached the OP, shared deeply personal grief, received comfort, and within hours began calling repeatedly.

By the next day, there were twelve missed calls. Her loneliness may be genuine, but genuine loneliness does not automatically make every request appropriate.

The OP’s discomfort is therefore worth respecting rather than dismissing as paranoia.

There is also an interesting psychological dynamic here. Someone experiencing bereavement and isolation may attach quickly to the first person who provides warmth and attention.

The OP may have unintentionally become associated with safety and companionship at a moment when the woman was emotionally vulnerable.

That could explain the rapid escalation without requiring any sinister motive. At the same time, intensity itself can become a boundary problem, regardless of why it happens.

A person can be lonely, vulnerable, and well-intentioned while still placing unreasonable demands on someone else’s time.

Her age does not make her automatically trustworthy, but neither does her desire to meet at home prove malicious intent.

The bigger issue is that she has already demonstrated difficulty respecting the OP’s availability.

The OP said she was busy with children and work and would contact her when she had time. Twelve calls afterward suggest that message did not fully register.

A sensible response would be to slow everything down. There is no reason to visit her house simply because she wants the meeting there.

If the OP remains interested in helping, meeting somewhere public during daylight would provide a comfortable middle ground.

Someone trusted could also be told where she is going and when she expects to return.

Most importantly, she should not feel guilty about declining food, entering the home, sharing additional personal information, or reducing contact if the situation continues to feel uncomfortable.

The woman’s grief deserves compassion, but compassion does not require access. The OP can acknowledge that she may be profoundly lonely while still deciding that this level of contact is too much.

In fact, setting a calm boundary now may be kinder to both of them than allowing an intense attachment to develop and then abruptly cutting it off later.

Her gut feeling does not need to predict danger to be valid. Sometimes discomfort is simply the mind noticing that a relationship is moving much faster than the circumstances justify.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters agreed that the elderly woman may genuinely be lonely but that OP should not become her sole source of companionship

Poppypie77 − I would look into any services in your area that are designed

to help lonely elderly people. In the UK,I think Age UK has like a telephone

befriending scheme where they match you up with a volunteer who will call

them say once week to check on them and have a chat etc and that may be helpful for her.

Theres also some other charities that sometimes have befrienders who go

to their house for a cuppa and a chat, or go out for coffee if they are able to etc.

I'd probably look into what services may be available in your area and try

and set her up with them so she has other people to talk to, or someone

who can visit etc so it's not all on you. There's also some paid services too if she is able to pay for some visits too.

I'd probably be the same as you being happy to keep an old lady company

and have a chat to her and make sure she's OK etc, but the multiple calls every day is not a good sign.

Despite saying she would wait for your call to arrange a chat, she

immediately called you like 20 times the next day in a short space of time,

and for the last several days since you met her. This is where it moves into

over baring behaviours and also unhealthy ones.

It seems you're the only person she knows now and she's become latched

on to you to be her constant daily companion. And that's just not feasible

when you work and have kids etc. I think in this situation I'd suggest getting

her in touch with some of the services in her area, and then step back.

Either ignore her calls and only choose to call her when it suits you, or if its too much, just block her unfortunately.

You could also enquire about her drs surgery, and notify them that you

think she needs checking up on to see if she's OK living alone, if she's

physically able to look after herself etc, and it just puts her on their radar too.

But yeah it's definitely not good being her one and only person she can talk

to, and its not right to hound you so many times every day. It's sad that

she's so lonely and isolated and desperate to talk to people, but at the same time she's become too over baring.

You can also look to see if there's any social groups or day centers she

could go to for the elderly where she'll have others to talk to as well.

Obviously you don't have to do all the research for places if you don't have

time, but I'd at least find one agency that you can put her in contact with,or

speak to your local adult care services and see if they can come out and talk

to her about any services in her area she may be able to access like the day centers.

Then she'll be on the social services radar too as a single lonely elderly lady.

They can sort out putting her in touch with the other organisations and services etc.

mbw70 − If there is any way you can figure out if she has a religion, get in

touch with a church or temple that could send someone out to see her. She needs some help, and you can’t do it.

she_makes_a_mess − You could call adult services to come check on her, like a welfare check

Kar1shkaKATmeowmeow − Do not go to her house under any circumstance

You have your children to worry about She is needy and will only get

needier. Id ask her to call her primary doctor and let them know the

situation they can get involved and possibly prescribe her something low dose for anxiety or provide a referral for a psychiatrist.

Even if this is all real, this is not your problem and you even just being kind

and listening to her is enough. But now she is treating you like her kid, her therapist and best friend all in one.

You are not going to benefit from this type of dynamic nor will your

children benefit from their mom focusing on this quite possibly innocent

stranger. Yes it's sad and you did what you could but going further into this

is enabling her inappropriate behavior. If she's like this now imagine what will happen if you have zero boundaries.

I wouldn't be surprised if her kid is avoiding her because she has some sort

of personality disorder. You can be nice but know your time will be best

spent with your children than this person who I'm sorry but you have no

idea who she is and her mental health background. Old doesn't mean safe/sane. Id be very careful if I were you.

Go9d luck.

Their main concern was personal safety

Ok_Sand_7902 − I think you have been kind but I personally would feel

harassed by her now. All these phone calls and invites to her home don’t

feel right. It may be because she is lonely but you don’t know anything

about her ( you don’t know if what she says is true) …. Going into a

stranger’s home is putting yourself in a vulnerable position…. . don’t do it.

PeachFar5156 − It's good to have empathy it is not good to not listen to

your gut. LISTEN to your gut please. You can have someone do a wellness

check if you are truly worried but I would not go into any strangers home

and eat food doesn't matter how old. Her husband could also be very much alive.

It's also unusual to push a single woman this much for companionship even

if she's an older woman. I empathize if she's truthful but it's not worth it if she's not.

skeletop − My first thought is she could have someone at home waiting for

you. What if she's the ruse? ! I've seen too many law and order and criminal

minds episodes 😭 Anyway, trust your gut. You don't know this woman and

don't owe her anything. You don't have to sacrifice your safety to be kind

and there are resources that can help women like her.

Even wellness checks. Good luck figuring it out!

LAthrowaway_25Lata − Wow, i’d feel weird about this situation too. There

is nothing wrong with you being worried that it could be some sort of trap.

Evil people come in all ages and sexes. I wonder if there is some sort of

elderly support resource that you can reach out to for guidance or maybe even to stop by her house with you.

If you do go, I suggest you being the one to bring a cake and insist on only

sitting outside with her. I’d probably also drop by unannounced, tbh.

But if you foresee yourself not wanting to commit to being her friend long

term, i’d just focus on finding some resources of people to help her out

through official channels, and not meet up with her and definitely continue to limit phone contact as well.

Also, if you got her name, google it followed by the word “obituary” and

see if you find any obits that match her husband in the time period that

corresponds with when she said he died and say her name in the Survived By section.

Actually, it’d be best to google his name plus “obituary” but if you dont

have his name, you can probably still find his obituary with her name. Edit-

also maybe ask about her at the restaurant you met her at. Maybe the staff know more about her

These commenters suggested meeting in public as a middle ground

ecfik − Agreeing to meet in public is a great compromise. Maybe offer to

buy her a coffee or meet at a local library. A bingo hall perhaps? I would try

to find somewhere she could meet other people closer to her age and find

a community. It may be innocent but if your spidey senses be tinglin, pay attention and trust your gut. Good luck!

Frolicking-Fox − She is 84 years old, probably only had her husband to talk

to, and now he's dead. Old people commonly get lonely, and she is dealing

with the loss of her husband. She has now attached to you for the kindness you showed her by talking to her.

That being said, the calls are excessive, and I, too, would be wondering if

some good intentions might have had been a mistake. And, it depends on

your feeling about this. It would be easy to block and ghost her, or just tell

her this is too much for you at this moment with your kids.

If you actually do like spending time with her and not just doing it out of

pity, then I think meeting her at the restaurant would be fine. If her vibes

give you the "nopes" then you should nope out. But if you want to be a

friend, you can meet at a public place and get a better idea of her.

The constant phone calls need to stop though. You can explain that in firm

language, saying if they don't stop, you will cut off all communication. You

also don't have to feel bad with ghosting her. She is someone you met once

and are just not feeling it anymore. Anyone who has lived 84 years knows how relationships go.

Use your discretion, and don't feel bad about the choice either way.

What began as a kind conversation with a grieving stranger quickly turned into constant calls and pressure to visit her home, so the poster’s unease makes sense.

The woman may simply be deeply lonely, vulnerable, and desperate for connection, but compassion doesn’t require ignoring personal boundaries or gut instincts.

Keeping any future contact public, limited, and on the poster’s terms would be reasonable.

Do you think she should step back completely, or continue helping with firmer boundaries? Would you ever visit a stranger’s home in this situation?
