Teen Feels Guilty for Being Relieved After His Girlfriend Loses the Pregnancy He Never Wanted

Two people can experience the same loss in completely different ways, especially when they never agreed on what the pregnancy meant.

According to this Redditor, he and his girlfriend were both 18 when they discovered she was pregnant despite using protection. She quickly became excited about parenthood, while he felt frightened and unprepared but began working harder to provide for the baby. After the pregnancy ended unexpectedly, his girlfriend fell into deep grief.

He, however, felt relieved that a responsibility he never believed they were ready for was no longer approaching. The emotional divide has left him unsure whether staying beside her is compassionate or whether the experience exposed serious incompatibilities between them.

'My GF miscarried. I have never been more relieved'

We are both 18. We've only had s__ 3 times, always used a condom. She got pregnant anyway.

She has been nothing but happy since she found out, and has made it abundantly clear that we would be keeping it.

I tried to make her see some semblance of reason that we just can't suport a kid, but she wouldn't listen.

So I got to work. I did everything in my power to work as much as I could to make as much money as I could before the baby came..

Then at the 25th week, miscarriage.

She's not taking it well at all. She is in the pits of dispare and has been having a good cry at least once a day.

I have never been more relieved in life. We were not ready for this. I was not ready to be a father, I need a solid 5 years at least...

Her behavior was so strange too.

Not the slightest hesitation from day one, she was just so eager to be a parent but had zero plan or discipline to be one. It bordered on delusional.

I don't want to leave her while she is this low, but her automatic assumption I wanted to be a parent along with many other things

she's done/said has really opened my eyes to how immature she is.. That was all so f__king scary. I don't think I'll ever feel as care free as I once...

Sometimes the hardest emotions to admit are the ones that seem impossible to say out loud. A person can feel sadness for someone else’s pain while also feeling relief that a frightening situation has ended. Those two emotions can exist together, especially when the future being mourned and the future being avoided are the same event viewed from different perspectives.

In this situation, the original poster is not simply celebrating a miscarriage. He is describing the overwhelming fear of becoming a parent at eighteen while feeling unprepared financially, emotionally, and personally. His relief comes from escaping a responsibility he believed could change the entire direction of his life.

At the same time, his girlfriend appears to be grieving the loss of a child she had already emotionally accepted. Their pain is moving in opposite directions: one person lost a future they wanted, while the other lost a future they were afraid of.

Many people may see the boyfriend’s reaction as cold, but another perspective is that both partners experienced a major emotional shock. Pregnancy can create an attachment before birth, even when the practical realities are unclear. For his girlfriend, becoming a mother may have represented love, purpose, or a new identity.

For him, it represented pressure, fear, and a loss of freedom. The conflict is not only about the pregnancy; it reveals that they may have had very different expectations about adulthood, responsibility, and their relationship.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists explains that pregnancy loss can involve intense grief, sadness, guilt, anger, and emotional distress, and that these reactions can affect each person differently. Support and compassionate care are important because there is no single “correct” way to experience loss.

Psychologist Jessica Zucker, who specializes in reproductive and maternal mental health, has also discussed how miscarriage can represent the loss of an imagined future, not only the loss of a pregnancy itself.

This does not mean the boyfriend should pretend to feel the same grief. Forced guilt rarely creates genuine empathy. However, understanding his girlfriend’s pain does require recognizing that her sadness is not an overreaction.

At the same time, her assumption that he would automatically embrace parenthood without a serious conversation was a major relationship issue. A child requires two people who are prepared and willing to take on that role.

The most important step now is honesty without cruelty. He should not stay only because he feels guilty, but he also should not dismiss her grief because his emotions are different. They both need space to process what happened and decide whether they can build a relationship based on shared values rather than fear, obligation, or resentment.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters believed the relationship had reached its natural end because the couple wanted fundamentally different futures

whatdowetrynow − I think this relationship has likely reached a natural end point.

I wish you both well, and I'm very glad for you that you won't be raising a child neither of you was prepared to care for.

Kaos_in_a_box − It is completely understandable that you are relieved. It's also completely understandable that she is devastated.

My best friends baby was born at 25 weeks.

That's quite far along into pregnancy. I agree with other people who have said you should reconsider the relationship.

It sounds like you two have separate ideas about what you would like for your life right now,

and now you know if she were to fall pregnant again, you would once again be at a disagreement about what to do.

nomoresweetheart − At 25 weeks it’s a stillbirth, which is devastating. For me that meant giving labouring and giving birth.

It’s fine not to be ready to be a parent, but you feel relieved at one of the worst things she could ever go through.

You’re just not compatible. Make sure she’s got a support network, and leave.

With you feeling like this you can’t really be providing the support she needs, and you leaving when she starts to recover is going to be even harder.

These Redditors stressed that a loss at 25 weeks is a stillbirth and recognized the profound trauma the girlfriend was experiencing

ShimmeringNothing − 25 weeks? That's not a miscarriage, that's a stillbirth.

This must be incredibly traumatic for her and may well have a deep impact on the rest of her life.

UrbanMuffin − At 25 weeks that’s a stillbirth and I can imagine that was very hard for her to go through.

I think you need to talk to her, but not while she’s in the worst part of her grieving.

Give her some time then talk to her and let her know how you feel, that while you feel bad about what happened,

that you have realized you both are too young to jump in to parenthood and not financially ready,

so you want to wait a few years for when you’re more mature and financially stable.

See if she’s in agreement with your point and is understanding first. Then decide if you need to break up or not.

Stormborn170 − At 25 weeks that is no longer a miscarriage, it’s a stillborn. Did she just have had to deliver the baby?

Of course she’s having a “good cry” every day. Her baby just died. A baby she wanted even if you didn’t. It’s no wonder she isn’t taking it well.

She just had a still birth and her boyfriend is on Reddit discussing leaving her with strangers. Poor thing.

This group encouraged OP to wait until emotions settled before making major relationship decisions

[Reddit User] − I don't blame you for wanting to leave, especially due to the circumstances you've recently faced.

First, I'd still like to send my most sincere apologies for your loss as well as hers. I know it's a relief for you but it's a loss nonetheless.

Secondly, I'd like to add that you don't need to be together to be supportive of each other.

You can end this relationship and still be there for her. Will it be awkward? Of course, but rather you tear the bandage off now then later.

Keep your head up and ALWAYS wear contraceptives and practice safe s__. (:

[Reddit User] − As someone who has had a miscarriage including one farther along it's very scary how misinformed many in the comments are.

Like someone else said, that is not a miscarriage. 25 weeks is stillbirth. Someone else was saying she must have tampered with it.

But we don't know that. That's an assumption. The only thing we do know is that hormones are terrible.

As soon as you know you are carrying something sometimes women or even the father's get attached.

And then there are the hormones which turn you into an absolute mess.

She has every right to feel that way and you have every right to feel the way you do as well.

I think now definitely is not a good time to make a decision while BOTH of you are recovering from this and emotional.

Even if you don't realize it. .. it has affected you to some extent in the way it has her because even if you didn't want the baby and she...

You both went through this together and you both have to heal.

You are allowed to make your decision to reconsider the relationship. All your feelings are valid and so are hers. I myself was.

left behind after a miscarriage because my partner didn't understand what it's like to deal with hormones.

The healing process can be hard on a woman's body so I just hope you don't take anything she says personal.

You may have both had different ideas about what you wanted but the baby is gone. Leave it in the past and move forward either on your own or together.

These commenters urged OP to establish firmer boundaries in future relationships and be more careful with contraception

More_Ad1418 − Major bullet dodged here. Use this as a lesson to use your voice to set boundaries for yourself early in future relationships

so this never happens again and you don't end up trapping yourself into going along with stuff you don't want to do.

Wanting kids when you aren't mature enough to care for them or provide for them = I'm not going to risk having s__ with this person.

Forward-Two3846 − Please exit this situation expeditiously and do not sleep with her again.

Always bring your own condoms even with people you trust. Also condoms are not 100% so 2 types of contraceptives are always better.

Do you think it’s possible for two partners to recover from discovering they want fundamentally different things in life? If relief and grief exist side by side after the same event, how should couples navigate those emotions respectfully? Share your thoughts below!
