Teen Keeps Seeing a White Van Sitting in Her Driveway, Then It Starts Passing Her House While She Walks Her Dog

in Social Issues

Feeling safe at home matters even more when someone spends most of the day there alone.

When the same unfamiliar vehicle keeps appearing without explanation, it can be hard to know whether the concern is reasonable or simply anxiety taking over.

One 16-year-old girl says she began noticing a white van with tinted windows repeatedly pulling into her rural driveway and sitting there for several minutes.

The first time she approached the door, the driver quickly left, but the van continued returning and later began passing the house while she walked her dog.

Her parents initially dismissed it as a possible delivery vehicle and told her not to involve police unless there was an emergency.

Eventually, she contacted the local sheriff herself.

Scroll down to see why the response from her parents left her almost as unsettled as the van itself.

A teenage girl grows frightened when a mysterious white van repeatedly appears outside her isolated home

'I think I'm in danger?'

So I'm 16F and I'm usually alone at home by myself all day because both my

parents work until very late at night and I'm online school but lately I've

been seeing this white van with tinted windows pull in my driveway and

just sit there for 15 mins. I opened the door and moved my hands like "is

there something you need "but they took off really quick... I didnt tell

anyone except some friends but 1 day later and I hear a car outside ( since

I'm in the country I hear everything) so I look and there it is again just

sitting there. I got scared so I called my parents and they said it might be

the delivery people but i dont think that's normal. My parents told me to

not call the cops unless it's an emergency but now when I'm outside

walking my dog I see this van frequently pass my house all the time. It's

making me very paranoid and scared, I have the picture of the van as well.

Update

I saw the van again earlier this morning. I contacted my local

towns sheriff's department and they contacted my parents, they want me

to send a picture of the van and they will be on the lookout. My mom is mad

because she said its probably a dumb delivery person and now the police

are gonna be in " our family's business " and my dad told me to start

carrying his gun with me while outside. ( those were their reactions)

Sometimes fear is not irrational just because you cannot yet prove what is causing it.

The OP is 16, home alone for long stretches, and repeatedly noticing the same white van entering her driveway, remaining there, leaving quickly when acknowledged, and later passing the house while she walks her dog.

None of that proves criminal intent. But it is enough to justify taking the pattern seriously.

What matters here is repetition and context. A delivery driver making one confusing stop would be easy to explain.

Returning to the same isolated home, sitting in the driveway without making a delivery, and repeatedly passing afterward is different.

The Stalking Prevention, Awareness & Resource Center notes that concerning behavior is often best understood as a pattern rather than as one dramatic incident, and that individual acts may seem harmless until viewed together.

That is why the OP’s decision to photograph the van and contact the sheriff was sensible.

SPARC specifically recommends documenting suspicious or stalking-related incidents because records can help establish a pattern, assess risk, and give law enforcement clearer information if behavior continues.

Her parents’ reactions are more complicated.

Her mother may genuinely believe the van belongs to a confused delivery driver, but dismissing the concern because involving police feels embarrassing puts social comfort ahead of verification.

The sheriff apparently considered the report reasonable enough to request the photograph and watch for the vehicle.

That does not mean officers have concluded something dangerous is happening. It simply means the situation deserves observation.

The father’s suggestion that his 16-year-old daughter carry his gun is much more concerning.

A frightened teenager should not be made responsible for confronting an unknown person.

Safety planning should focus first on distance, locked doors, charged phones, trusted adults, avoiding approaching the vehicle, and contacting emergency services if someone attempts to enter or directly threatens her.

RAINN similarly recommends telling trusted people or police, keeping communication available, and making a personalized safety plan when someone may be following or monitoring a person.

Most importantly, the OP should stop opening the door or approaching the van to ask what its occupants want.

Curiosity is understandable, but information is less important than distance.

Maybe there is an innocent explanation.

But safety decisions do not require certainty first.

When the same unexplained vehicle repeatedly appears around a minor who is routinely home alone, documenting it and asking adults in authority to investigate is not being dramatic. It is exactly what caution is for.

See what others had to share with OP:

These Redditors urged OP to contact the police, using the non-emergency line unless immediate danger arises

Pyrogen83 − Call your local non-emergency police line. You can talk to one

of the operators and/or have an officer swing by to talk to you. But if you

feel like you are in danger, call the emergency number and give any and all

descriptions possible about the van and occupants inside that you see.

[Reddit User] − If you can, get the license plate. Only if it's safe to do so.

Either by picture or memory. Call your police district and report everything.

SparrowFate − I used to work with the police as a sort of intern. Calls like

this are normal and perfectly ok. People call in for less. If you feel unsafe

the police will try to help. Call the non emergency line (unless it becomes

an emergency. Then call 911) and tell them the situation. They will

probably dispatch an officer in a low priority call.

Meaning it could be a bit. But they're on their way. They will talk to you

about it. Then most likely they will set up a patrol through your

neighborhood and keep their eyes out for the van. You got this.

itsonlyascratch − I think there’s no harm in calling the police and reporting these incidents.

These commenters emphasized staying indoors, locking doors and windows, and avoiding the van while walking the dog

bzngabazooka − Hey, First of all if you see the van again don't open the

door at all in any circumstance. Make sure that you take precautions and

make sure everything is locked every time you get home. Have a phone

close to you at all times. Its great that you took a picture(I'm assuming from your cell phone)!

Call the non emergency line and let them know whats going on and show

them the picture when they come. Also talk with your parents and show

them the picture. Be very serious and let them know your concern(if it's

something you can talk with your parents about). Even so, every time the

van comes up try to take a picture from inside your place.

If its 2 days in a row you do it both days. ...but do it from inside your house.

Try to do it as best as you can without them noticing it. Your cellphone will

have the date and time of the picture. If it happens 3 times max, call the

cops(unless its truly an emergency then call them immediately).

Show them through those pictures that they have indeed been coming all

this time. Don't risk going outside to get any licence plate info. You stay in

your house with the phone ready. With those pictures the cops will know

the date and the time to really track these guys down. Just in case have a plan.

If they where to break in what would you do? Do you have a place you can

lock yourself in or hide(as you call and wait for the cops)? It's scary to think

about, but mentally having a plan will make you feel a little more confident if something serious where to happen.

Hope this helps, but I'm sure the emergency line will tell you what to do better then I can. Keep us updated!

binkynewhead − If I were your parents, I'd be worried. Sounds like they are

watching your house. Call the non emergency line and ask them what you

should do. Agree with other posters, keep the doors locked and stay close

to the house when walking the dog. If you see the van try to get the plate number while keeping yourself safe.

If your parents get mad at you for calling the cops, they need to adjust their priorities.

FitChickFourTwennie − Don’t walk near the van alone, ever. If they go in

your driveway again, call the cops. Better to be safe.

These Redditors encouraged OP to trust her instincts and take suspicious behavior seriously rather than dismissing her fears

MrsJ88 − I had a stalker when I was 14, but no one believed me so I thought

I was crazy. He would park near my bus stop every morning and just watch me. I was the only student at that stop.

I really thought I was paranoid until my bus driver--bless her\--asked me

about it and I told her what was going on (the first adult I talked to about

it). The bus was met at school by one of the counselors and I was escorted into the office where police were waiting.

It turns out the guy was a pedo, but this was before s__ offenders had to

register. In his car, they found notes detailing each day of the week with

what time I arrived at the bus stop and what time the bus arrived, noting the two to five minutes between.

He also noted my habit of carrying my backpack on one shoulder, which

days I wore sneakers, etc. Even creepier was that he noted how much

longer he could watch me and how much closer he could get before I made direct eye contact with him.

I'm NOT trying to scare you, but I AM trying to let you know it's okay to

trust your gut and call the cops if you're scared. I'm married to a former

LEO (Law Enforcement Officer--cop) who always told us to call the police if something was suspicious and/or if we were afraid.

LEOs would rather take calls where it turns out to be nothing than to

answer a call where a disaster could have been avoided. Call the non-

emergency number and tell them what's going on. As my husband still says,

"Stay safe and be a good witness--don't get reckless and be a good victim. " So show the police the picture of the van.

Please keep us updated, OP.

NomenNesci0 − Trust your instinct. A lot of young women's lives would be

saved if their instincts were not dismissed or shamed. If no one else will

listen call the police. But also don't trust them either. Keep making noise until your concerns are heard and addressed.

sharkbait1981 − Please, follow YOUR intuition. Not anyone else's. Better safe than sorry.

These users warned that the situation could potentially involve serious criminal activity and urged OP to involve authorities

Teagan01 − This sounds hella sketchy to me. I don't know why your parents

aren't more freaked out about this, maybe they've never watched Dateline.

Seriously though, as others have said, call your local non emergency police

number and explain the situation with as much detail as you can and tell

them about not wanting your parents to get upset with you/not wanting to get in trouble.

Also be sure to give them all pictures that you have, and try to take as many

as you can. Never go outside without your cell phone, even if you're just

getting the mail. You need to stay very calm and alert at all times. Make

sure all of the windows and doors in your house are always locked, especially at night.

Be very, very careful and do not let your guard down. And if, heaven forbid,

they manage to somehow kid nap you, your BEST chance is making sure the

police are already aware of all of this so that they know where to start looking for you from the get go.

[Reddit User] − Call the police. Even if these creeps don't kidnap you, they

could be trying to kidnap someone else. You could be saving someone else.

[Reddit User] − Hey - as someone who was almost kidnapped call it in. Non

emergency or the emergency one. Human trafficking is real so burglars. It’s

not worth it. Cops don’t mind it’s their job. Stay safe.

Her fear is understandable because the van has appeared repeatedly, entered the driveway, and driven off quickly when she acknowledged it.

Contacting the sheriff and sharing the photo was a reasonable safety step, especially since she is often home alone.

The most troubling part is that her parents seem more concerned about embarrassment than why their daughter feels unsafe.

She should keep documenting what happens and avoid approaching the vehicle herself.

Do you think her parents are underreacting, or is the sheriff’s involvement enough for now?
