Their Baby Was Due Just Months Before a Destination Wedding, Then the Bride Said They “Shouldn’t Have Gotten Pregnant”

Planning a wedding often comes with high expectations, carefully crafted timelines, and dreams of the perfect day. But life rarely follows a schedule, especially when babies enter the picture.

One expectant couple found themselves caught between celebrating a family milestone and preparing for one of their own. The husband’s sister-in-law had planned a destination wedding for the following summer, but by then, the couple would be caring for a four-month-old baby. Knowing how difficult cross-country travel and time away from an infant could be, they immediately began brainstorming compromises.

Instead of appreciating their efforts, however, the bride became increasingly upset. What started as a disagreement over a child-free wedding soon escalated into accusations, guilt trips, and one comment that left the expectant mother questioning whether she should have become pregnant at all.

Here’s how a family celebration turned into a painful conflict.

'AITA for my wife and I potentially bringing our newborn to my SIL’s wedding?'

Long time reader, first time poster!

My SIL gets married next summer, at which time we’ll have a four month old.

It’s a destination wedding across the US from where we live, and rightly so, my wife doesn’t feel comfortable leaving our baby at home,

even with me and/or my parents helping. My SIL is treating this as an affront to her wedding day, even though we’ve made every effort to try and minimize baby’s...

including me standing at the back of the ceremony with baby, me staying home at the rental place with baby, etc.

As a result she is treating my wife HORRIBLY and she now feels guilty for being pregnant in the first place

even though we both know it’s not fair at all to put our family planning on hold just because she is getting married and chose to plan her wedding in...

She has claimed that we don’t understand “her vision” for the day, which includes no kids.

We feel that since we’ve made every effort to reach a compromise, we are definitely not in the wrong, and I’m trying to stick up for my wife,

but we figured more opinions would help us to either reach a decision or stand up for ourselves. So Reddit, are we the assholes?

Edit, forgot to include this: the main complication is that my wife is the Matron of Honor. In a horrible phone call today she all but said we shouldn’t have...

A Baby Changed the Wedding Plans

The couple explained that the wedding would require traveling across the United States, making it impossible to simply attend for a few hours before returning home.

Their baby would only be four months old at the time.

The mother wasn’t comfortable leaving such a young infant behind for several days, even with her husband or grandparents available to help. For her, the issue wasn’t about trusting family members. It was about being separated from a newborn during a period when feeding schedules, sleep routines, and constant care are still overwhelming.

Understanding that the wedding was intended to be child-free, the couple didn’t demand special treatment.

Instead, they proposed several compromises.

The husband offered to remain at the back of the ceremony with the baby so he could quietly leave if the infant made any noise.

He also suggested skipping the ceremony altogether and staying back at their rental property with the baby while his wife attended alone in her role as Matron of Honor.

From their perspective, they were trying to protect both the bride’s vision and their child’s needs.

Unfortunately, none of those options seemed acceptable.

“You Shouldn’t Have Gotten Pregnant”

According to the husband, the bride reacted as though the pregnancy itself was a personal offense.

She repeatedly insisted they didn’t understand her vision for a child-free wedding.

During one particularly difficult phone conversation, she went even further, implying that the couple simply shouldn’t have planned to have a baby before her wedding.

That comment hit especially hard.

Instead of looking forward to welcoming their first child, the expectant mother found herself feeling guilty for becoming pregnant at all.

Her husband watched as someone who should have been celebrating this new chapter instead felt ashamed because of circumstances that weren’t planned around a wedding date.

For him, defending his wife became more important than attending the ceremony.

When Expectations Collide With Reality

Conflicts like this often arise because weddings and new babies both represent major life transitions, each carrying enormous emotional significance.

Family therapist Dr. Susan Krauss Whitbourne has written in Pycholosgy Today that family conflicts often intensify when expectations become rigid and people begin viewing compromises as personal defeats rather than collaborative solutions. Healthy relationships require flexibility, especially during significant life events that naturally involve competing priorities.

That perspective fits this situation remarkably well.

The bride was completely entitled to envision a child-free wedding.

Guests, however, are equally entitled to decline invitations when attending would require choices that don’t work for their families.

Neither decision is inherently wrong.

The problem begins when someone expects others to rearrange deeply personal life decisions, including pregnancy and childcare, to preserve a single day’s plans.

Parenthood inevitably changes priorities. Weddings celebrate the beginning of one family, while newborns represent the beginning of another. Ideally, those milestones should coexist with understanding rather than resentment.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

Commenters emphasized that child-free weddings are perfectly reasonable, but so is declining an invitation when traveling with a very young baby isn’t practical.

LostPrincess32 − Dude, I would honestly just not even go. She's going to find some reason to find fault with your wife, just let your SIL live in her little...

SummitJunkie7 − This is really simple. Is the baby invited? If yes, then obviously it's fine to bring them. If not, then obviously you should not bring them. If the...

fifty9inth − You know what would make you not an a__hole? Staying home. Everybody wins!

KrofftSurvivor − You would be if you actually did this because people are allowed to decide that they do not want children at their wedding. But the real problem here...

ApartmentHot5376 − NTA tell her y'all will definitely make the next one 😉

Several readers noted that the husband’s offer to stay behind with the baby while his wife fulfilled her Matron of Honor duties seemed like an exceptionally generous compromise.

AbbreviationsOdd4941 − You can’t even stay at the rental with the baby? That’s unreasonable and nonsensical. NTA

Old-Paleontologist-1 − I would not go. Your baby is the priority. It's fine for people to have child free weddings, but they have to understand that that means some people...

Chi_Law − Updated to NTA INFO: What's SIL's problem with the "you stay back at the rental place with the baby" option? At first glance, that seems like an option...

And people who invite new parents to things just have to accept that sometimes those parents will have to choose between bringing the baby or not coming at all. If...

SIL would be perfectly within her rights to not want a small baby at a wedding ceremony, but she crosses a line if she's singling you out or trying to...

EDIT: OP's comments and edit seem to indicate that SIL's problem is, in fact, that she's demanding both parents come to the ceremony and have someone else watch thr baby....

What truly shifted opinion, though, was the bride’s reported comment suggesting the couple shouldn’t have gotten pregnant. For many, that crossed the line from wedding stress into needless cruelty.

Vast-Swimmer5844 − Your baby won't have their full workup of vaccines by that age, and who knows what they'll be exposed to while traveling. It would be awful if that...

Let your sister-in-law have her vision of a child-free wedding, which is apparently more important to her than peaceful long-term relations with her sister and her sister's family, send a...

YMBFKM − NTA -- There's no valid reason for SIL to be upset if you stay at the rental with the baby while your wife attends the wedding. There's no...

No couple should feel guilty for welcoming a child because it happens to overlap with someone else’s wedding.

At the same time, no bride is obligated to change a child-free celebration if that’s genuinely important to her.

Sometimes there simply isn’t a perfect solution.

But compassion usually goes much further than demands ever will. If preserving a wedding vision requires making an expectant mother feel ashamed of her pregnancy, perhaps it’s worth asking whether the vision has become more important than the family it’s supposed to celebrate.

What do you think? Should new parents make every effort to attend important family weddings, or was this bride asking far too much?
