Wife Once Tipped Lawnmower Into Lake, Husband Hires Goat To Do The Job Instead

in Social Issues

A husband loathes yard work with a passion. The roaring mower aggravates his old shoulder injury and the gasoline stench turns his stomach. So when grass overgrows under strict neighborhood rules, he cleverly rents a goat that munches everything down perfectly without breaking any policies.

The goat solution worked like magic, but neighbors caught sight of the unusual worker and burst into laughter over the odd sight. Furious at the sudden attention and whispers of them seeming eccentric, she fired back with biting sarcasm, mocking him for dodging “manly” duties by suggesting horses for shopping or chickens for cleaning.

A husband rented a goat to mow his lawn, sparking a marital spat over neighborhood perceptions.

'AITA for renting a goat?'

So I (30M) hate cutting grass. Hate it, hate it, hate it. The sound of the lawn mower makes me wish I could take my ears off like Mr. Potato...

It hurts my shoulder (I got injured in HS and it never healed right) and I might be the only person in the world who doesn’t like the smell of...

This week was the very first week this year that I would need to cut the grass. We live in a fairly warm state, and the HOA is very strict...

We even have little flags at the front of the yard that the grass isn’t allowed to get taller then.

So the point is. The lawn needs to be mowed. I don’t want to do it. My wife can’t because the last time she mowed a lawn she tipped into...

Just so happens I know a guy who owns a goat, and I offer him $20 to bring it over to eat the grass for me.

The goat eats the grass, we keep her away from the neighbors yards, goat goes home. It was great! Way better than mowing.

Except now my wife is mad because some of the neighbors saw the goat and think it’s hysterical that we had a goat doing yard work for us.

She’s p__sed that I made us look like ‘weird hicks’ in front of all of her friends.

I don’t care if they think we’re a little weird, I’m happy to be laughed at if it means saving myself from the headache inducing sound of a lawn mower.

But now she’s making weird comments around the house about getting a horse to carry groceries, or a chicken to clean the windows since there’s no man in the house...

I didn’t expect her to react so negatively to a goat, but maybe I’m missing something? So was an I an a__hole?

Edit: the goat does not violate HOAs (bs) policies! They have strict rules against raising farm animals,

but if, say, the HOA presidents daughter wants a pony at her birthday party for a few hours, that’s a-okay.

Swapping a noisy mower for a hungry goat? It’s like turning yard work into a mini farm adventure – adorable, efficient, and way kinder to the planet.

The core issue here boils down to differing priorities in a marriage: the husband values comfort, health, and ingenuity (his shoulder injury makes mowing painful, and the goat nailed the job without drama), while the wife feels embarrassed by the attention, worried it paints them as oddballs in the eyes of neighbors and friends.

Both sides make sense. One’s protecting physical well-being and embracing a fun solution, the other’s guarding social image. But her pointed jabs about “no man in the house” cross into unfair territory, poking at traditional roles in a way that stings.

This highlights a broader trend in relationships: how much weight do we give to outsiders’ opinions? Many couples navigate similar bumps, from unconventional hobbies to home choices. Interestingly, goat grazing isn’t some wild outlier, it’s a growing eco-trend. Companies and cities rent herds for vegetation control, and it’s proven popular for clearing brush without chemicals or fuel.

On the environmental side, traditional gas mowers pack a punch: according to the EPA, one gas lawn mower emits 89 pounds of CO₂ each year, and refueling gas-powered lawn equipment results in 17 million gallons of spilled gasoline a year.

What about goats? Zero emissions while they work, natural fertilizer dropped on-site, and no roaring engines disturbing the peace. It’s a quiet, green win that also spares the mower’s shoulder strain.

Psychologist Thomas Gilovich highlights the social pressures through the concept of the “spotlight effect,” our tendency to overestimate how closely others notice what we do or how we look. He explains that when worrying about appearances, “Many fewer people than you think are likely to notice it in the first place.”

This applies perfectly here. The neighbors found it hilarious and endearing, not judgmental, but the fear of scrutiny escalated the tension.

Neutral advice? Open chats about boundaries and respect go far. The husband could acknowledge her feelings of embarrassment, while she might ease up on the sarcasm. Teamwork makes the dream (and the lawn) work. Compromise ideas: next time, opt for a pro service if visibility’s an issue, or lean into the fun together.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

Some people say NTA because renting a goat is environmentally friendly, practical, and a clever alternative to mowing.

[Reddit User] − NTA. You picked the more environmentally friendly (and adorable) option.

Your wife needs to stop caring what the neighbors think. And maybe be less extra, too.

Edit: JFC, I was referring to the goat being more environmentally friendly for the lawn, not the world. Do y'all nitpick everything like this? You must be fun at parties.

If you want to do an analysis of emissions from a goat truck vs. a lawnmower, you be my guest.

Also, renting a goat to handle your lawn isn't "extra". This is not new, it's been an alternative option for a while.

Hell, Anacostia (near DC) used a whole herd of goats to manage overgrown lots and other properties years ago (I read an article about it, don't ask me where).

The wife, however, is absolutely being extra because rather than just admit mild embarrassment, she's making it a whole production, and mocking her husband in the process.

Another commenter said she's straight up being a toxic a__hole, and they aren't wrong.

But since I was asked to pass judgement on OP, and not his over-the-top spouse, I went with a more low-key "extra" instead.

Material-Profit5923 − NTA. And your wife is wrong anyway. It's not a h__k thing. There are entire businesses built around renting goats for yard care (especially to clear out brush),...

Abject-Technician558 − NTA The goat is Eco-friendly! It does not make noise like machines.

It does not use fossil fuels, and its poop can be composted by the owner.

Tell Mrs. that you're a step ahead with environmental awareness. Or she can mow it herself, lake and all.

theladymorganna − I have a neighbor with goats and I was just thinking today about asking to rent them. Your wife is overreacting. NTA

Some people find the situation hilarious, especially the wife tipping the mower into a lake.

Megmelons55 − Your wife tipped your mower into a lake so you rented a goat to chew your grass. Holy f__k I love you both.

Nta. Tell me there's video of the goat hard at work hahahaha

LastPlaceStar − Why is no one commenting on the fact that his wife can't mow the lawn because the last time she did she "tipped into a lake..?"

spectre893 − She... tipped into a lake? What! ? Gonna need to elaborate on that one.

Moving on to the subject at hand, having a goat moan your loan is an absolutely genius move and I applaud you for it.

You had a problem and came up with a solution that evidently works. If your wife doesn't like it she can do something about it. NTA

Some people say NTA because the wife is toxic for mocking OP’s masculinity and overreacting.

Significant_Speaker9 − NTA. Funny how your wife went straight to attacking your masculinity. That's straight-up abusive and toxic as hell.

Lex-tailonis − So the person who can’t mow a lawn because they ended up in a lake is making fun of you??? NTA

We use goats. Minimum 2 acre zoning. There’s a waiting list in my town for goats. If anyone give you a hard time tell them to p__s off.

Thediciplematt − NTA I’d pay the goat too. If she has a problem with it she can bring in the goat for questioning.

In the end, this goat rental saga reminds us that creative solutions can spark unexpected family friction, especially when one partner’s relief clashes with the other’s worry over appearances. Was the Redditor’s clever fix fair, considering his pain and the perfect results, or did it overlook her valid discomfort?

How would you balance practicality with partnership in a similar spot? Drop your thoughts below, we’re all ears. And no mowers required!
