Woman Begged Her Boyfriend To Let Her Sleep, But He Kept Waking Her Up Every Morning

by Layla Bui
August 3, 2026
in Social Issues

Sleep is one of the most basic needs in any relationship, yet it can become a major source of conflict when one person feels ignored. What seems like a small habit can become exhausting when repeated every day and dismissed instead of addressed.

The original poster (OP) works long restaurant shifts, is recovering from past struggles, and is trying to improve her financial situation. Despite needing rest before early shifts, she says her boyfriend has recently started waking her hours before her alarm by turning on lights, making noise, and refusing to change his routine.

After repeated conversations and emotional pleas, OP began questioning whether the issue was simply inconsideration or something deeper in their relationship. Read on to see how Reddit responded to her concerns about respect, exhaustion, and feeling unheard.

'31M keeps waking me F/27 up hours before my alarm'

Hello! I’m not even 100% sure how to do this. But my boyfriend ( m31) has been waking me up hours before my alarm for over a month now.

I need some advice here. Am I going crazy or is this valid?

A little backstory. I am 27 female, I work in a high volume restaurant that doesn’t close until 11pm most nights and is open again 12 hours later at 11am.

Over this past year I have gotten sober from alcohol and I have gotten REALLY serious about paying off all my debts :)

but this means I’ve been working double after double after double. Normally 12+ hours a shift.

I don’t mind working that much and I do enjoy my job, but I am tired as heck some days and after about a week of doubles my body hurts...

So this is where sleep comes in.

Normally I get home between 11-1am depending on how quickly the restaurant empties out.

I wake up at the exact same time every single day for my morning shift. Which is either 8:47 or 9:15 if I need to snooze my alarm.

But for the past month my boyfriend and I have been getting into arguments over sleep.

He gets off work around 8:30 at night and will play video games or nap until I get off.

Doesn’t help with dinner, doesn’t do any laundry, doesn’t help around the house or even feed our cat.

So it’s my job to do what he hasn’t done when I get home from work, on top of my shower I take after work I can be up for...

But this is where I need the advice. For the past month or so my boyfriend has been waking up really early in the morning. Between 4:30-7:30.

Yes I know 7:30 isn’t that early but when I don’t have to even be awake till 8:50 nearly that’s a lot of extra sleeping time.

But he used to wake up early and be respectful of me sleeping.

Not turning on lights, using his phone light as a flashlight, so it’s not as bright, just basic respect.

But recently he’s been waking up so early turning on every single light in our bathroom in our closet next to the bed, his flashlight on his phone.

He’ll also use the Alexa to turn on all of our lights which is pretty loud and he does ride a motorcycle

so the first thing he does is get ready to ride his motorcycle and he wears these really big heavy boots

and for some reason that’s the first thing he’s been putting on his feet at 4 o’clock in the morning.

I do really enjoy waking up to him, but I have been begging and pleading with him to please try and let me sleep

instead of turning on all the lights yelling at Alexa walking around with heavy boots slamming doors

and he just keeps telling me that I’m getting enough sleep and that it’s not a problem

but I’ve been waking up with a big headache every single morning for the past month by the time I’m closing the restaurant I work at.

I am so tired. I can barely keep my eyes open.

And I have begged and begged for him to please just be quieter and not turn on all the lights like he used to do.

And for this past week, I’ve been woken up hours before my alarm and I have been getting very irrationally angry because the amount of times

I have literally begged with tears in my eyes to just let me sleep an extra two or three hours and just nothing comes from it.

I understand he’s his own person and he wants to do what he wants but he also doesn’t listen or care when I beg him to just be quiet and...

I feel like I’m going crazy from sleep deprivation. I haven’t slept more than seven hours max in the past month.

I feel like an awful person yelling at him and getting angry from being woken up at the b__t crack of dawn,

but it’s nearly impossible for me to fall back asleep due to sleeping problems like insomnia, and he knows this today.

I finally broke down and told him that the UN categorizes sleep deprivation as torture, and he just laughed in my face and started mocking me.

Does this man hate me or is he just truly incapable of being quiet in the mornings, even though he was quiet for the past five years of our relationship.

Update: wow, so unfortunately I was awoken at 3:30am again and I come onto Reddit to see if anyone responded to this post

and the amount of responses blew my mind! I am like in the verge of tears at the moment from all the “support” / “insight” from others.

Hopefully I made sense in my post, but thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’ll give a quick update on how things have gone in the past 4...

Absolutely nothing has changed. 🤗🤗🤗! What did I expect. Well let’s start here.

After I made this post we had a talk about my sleep schedule and how I absolutely need to have my rest

because I am turning more and more evil day after day from not getting good rest, and I hate not feeling normal.

He got a bit defensive and just brushed this off on his medication, which is a possibly, but I’ve been hearing that used as an answer for *a lot* for...

So I just don’t know what to trust. I also see since this post kinda blew up, I should get into the past maybe for a second.

Basically my boyfriend and I were pretty big drinkers and would “party” a lot.

And we got sober earlier this year, and things were going really good for about 5 months or so and then my bf ended up relapsing and my trust got...

But moving on… he said he would try and be more respectful of me and be quieter but nothing has changed at all.

I’ve told him I can’t keep living like this. He’s been a bit better about care for our cat but I’m still doing most of the work.

I feel as if I don’t deserve this one bit and I’m not asking for much.

We’ve been dating for almost 6 years now and we have this big Europe trip planned later this September.

It sucks holding onto hope in relationships, it’s like a constant battle between my heart and my head.

But at this point it’s affecting my own mental health and life

and if this man doesn’t care to respect me and my boundaries and MY mental health then this can’t go on.

I’m sure I’m not the best girlfriend 24/7 but I try my best to make sure we have everything we need and I will work my ass off physically, mentally,

and emotionally for him and myself sometimes. But I feel like I’m just giving and giving and giving anymore with not much in return.

I just hate that I’ve become an angry person who’s easy to snap, or is this is how normal people deal with being woken up early AF every morning.

I’ve read a lot of these comments and I’m just in awe.

I feel like I know what I’ve been needing to do for awhile now and that I shouldn’t be treated the way I’m treated.

But I’m also so optimistic or at least try to be.

But you guys are right, this man obviously must hate me and can’t come to terms with it or something, or the n__cissism runs strong.

I just don’t understand why anyone would purposefully mess with people , especially when they “love them”.

But anyways , it’s 4:54am right now.

My boyfriend woke up at 3:30 asking me who stole his medicine when he literally hid it from himself in his underwear drawer.

(weird? Idk it pissed me off at 3:30 am tho) he turns around and tells me that’s not what he said at all

and that I’m crazy and he’s going to go get a coffee and go to work early.

I begged him to just lay down until his alarm would go off at 5:55 but he insisted on leaving.

He was quieter tho, but still leaving on a motorcycle with an aftermarket exhaust at like 4:15am is just disrespectful to the neighbors living around us.

Maybe that’s just me. I hate being this tired and frustrated and hurt. I love him to death but I can’t keep loving the idea of something that once was.

There’s constant disrespect in other aspects of this relationship and this is just one small drop of water in a f__king moonsoon of a relationship.

The more and more I sit and read these responses over and then think about the way he acts, it hits me.

He really doesn’t give a single f__k about anyone or anything other than this motorcycle and himself.

He waited until after I bought the tickets to this trip to start all these s__tty behaviors.

I just feel blindsided and frustrated that I’m no longer being listened to or valued in a relationship.

I’ll probably update this a couple more times since it’s blown up so much. But this is where we are now.

Looking Into therapy at the overwhelming amount of responses that make me feel as if I’m not a crazy bitchy “old grandma” as I’ve been called this morning.

And at this point I have plans in my head that I’m going to start setting in stone,

but for now I’m just going to keep taking care of myself snd trying to save as much money as I can.

I’m sure I’ll get comments like why not just leave his ass. And I really wish it was that easy for me.

I’m trying my best and my eyes have been opened to all the bs I’ve been putting up with.

One step at a time.. Once again I hope this all makes sense, I’ve been awake since around 3am :/

The surface issue in this story is about lights, boots, and a noisy morning routine. But the deeper conflict is not really about waking up early. It is about whether one partner’s basic needs are being respected after they have clearly communicated them.

Sleep is not a luxury, especially for someone working long restaurant shifts that end late at night. The OP is describing a schedule where she returns home exhausted, still handles household responsibilities, and then struggles to recover because her sleep is repeatedly interrupted.

Being tired can make anyone more emotional, impatient, and reactive. That does not mean she is “crazy” or unreasonable. It means her body is signaling that something is wrong.

A healthy relationship does not require both people to have identical schedules, but it does require consideration.

If one partner wakes up earlier, there are many simple compromises: preparing clothes the night before, using dim lighting, avoiding loud appliances, closing doors gently, or getting ready in another room. These are small adjustments that communicate, “Your rest matters to me.”

What stands out most is that the boyfriend reportedly used to be considerate. He knew how to move quietly for years, which suggests this is not simply a case of being unable to control his noise. The concerning part is the change in behavior and his response after being told repeatedly that it was affecting her health.

Instead of showing concern, he reportedly dismissed the problem, told her she was getting enough sleep, laughed when she compared sleep deprivation to a serious issue, and mocked her frustration.

Research on relationships often shows that the way couples respond to each other’s complaints matters more than the complaint itself. A partner does not have to agree immediately, but they should show curiosity and care. Responding with ridicule or minimizing someone’s distress can slowly damage trust because the person begins to feel alone inside the relationship.

The added context also changes the situation. The OP mentions that both partners struggled with alcohol, that her boyfriend relapsed, and that she feels she has been carrying much of the emotional and practical responsibility. The sleep issue appears to be one example of a larger pattern where she feels she gives more than she receives.

According to the American Psychological Association, chronic sleep disruption can negatively affect mood, concentration, emotional regulation, and overall wellbeing.

A person who is repeatedly losing sleep may naturally experience increased irritability and difficulty coping with stress. This does not excuse harmful behavior, but it explains why the OP feels like she is becoming someone she does not recognize.

The boyfriend’s perspective is worth considering too. If his early waking is connected to medication, work demands, anxiety, or another health issue, that deserves attention. However, a possible explanation does not remove responsibility. Someone can have a legitimate reason for waking early and still make an effort not to disturb their partner.

The larger question is not “Who is right about the morning routine?” The question is whether both people are willing to protect each other’s wellbeing. A relationship cannot function when one person repeatedly says, “This is hurting me,” and the other person responds as if their pain is an inconvenience.

The OP’s exhaustion seems to have revealed something important: the problem is not only that she is losing sleep. She is feeling unheard.

A loving partner may not fix everything immediately, but they should at least care that something is hurting the person beside them. When that concern disappears, the issue becomes much bigger than an alarm clock or a pair of boots.

Check out how the community responded:

These Redditors described the boyfriend’s behavior as abusive and urged OP to leave

QueenofRaccoons − - He doesn't respect you - He doesn't do laundry - He doesn't clean - He doesn't cook - He doesn't even feed A HELPLESS ANIMAL

He doesn't care that you've begged him to stop - He openly mocks you GIRL HOW MANY RED FLAGS DO YOU NEED TO SEE BEFORE YOU LEAVE HIM?!

Obviously he's not only an a__hole but sadistic as he clearly enjoys watching you suffer with sleep deprivation, but at some point it's on you to find your spine &...

plastic_venus − Doesn’t help with dinner, doesn’t do any laundry, doesn’t help around the house or even feed our cat.

So it’s my job to do what he hasn’t done when I get home from work, on top of my shower I take after work I can be up for...

I have literally begged with tears in my eyes to just let me sleep an extra two or three hours and just nothing comes from it.

Does this man hate me Yes. This is abuse, and he hates you.

Poekienijn − I would not even do this to someone I don’t like. He must really, really hate you. Please kick him out.

These commenters believed he was intentionally holding OP back and encouraged creating an exit plan

mt4704 − I would say he hates you. I could only read about 65% of your post before my eyes glazed over.

You're going in a direction he cannot. Maybe you were more easily manipulated when you weren't sober.

Maybe he sees if you're debt free, you can be independent without him. Whatever it is, he is being abusive.

It's a violation of one's human rights to be deprived of sleep. Work in the shadows now that you see him for who he is.

Make your moves as quietly as possible so you can escape.

Because if he acts like this when you're in a relationship, I can't imagine how he'll behave when you're leaving.

Wchijafm − He's doing it on purpose. I dont know why maybe because youve quit drinking and are working to get rid of debt and better yourself?

He's trying to drag you back down to the place he found you at so you dont realize you can do better and have a partner who cares and respects...

Id be finding an exit plan. I would not put up with this nonsense

MOGicantbewitty − He hates you because you got sober. He liked it when you were f**ked up because then he could feel better about himself.

I never had a drinking problem but I did have some mental health problems and I had a husband like this.

My best friend is currently divorcing her husband because of how mean he is to her now that she got sober.

It's time to leave. You have done so much hard work to better yourself, and don't let this a__hole undo it. And you are right.

Sleep deprivation IS torture. You are being abused. Of course, he laughed at you and mocked you when you said that. He enjoys hurting you.

He is angry at you for getting sober and he is hurting you because of it. YOU ARE RIGHT. HE IS HURTING YOU. PLEASE LEAVE.

You deserve a hell of a lot more. PS CONGRATULATIONS on your sobriety and working on paying off your debts!

These commenters strongly advised ending the relationship due to the harmful treatment

ohokreddit − He hates you. Dump him.

rainbowshummingbird − Your boyfriend hates you. Move on and find some peace in your life.

qtqy − He's abusing you

Should she cancel the Europe trip and use the money she can recover to rebuild independently? At what point does repeated inconsideration become deliberate harm?
