Woman Demands Exhausted Medical Assistant’s Seat on Nearly Empty Bus Because She Says She’s “Privileged”

Public transportation can be exhausting after a long shift, especially when you have spent the entire day on your feet. Finding an empty seat and finally getting a few quiet minutes to yourself should not be complicated, particularly when there are plenty of other seats available.

The OP was working as a medical assistant at the time and boarded a nearly empty New York bus around 9 p.m. after a particularly exhausting day. They chose a seat in the front, where several priority seats were available for elderly or disabled passengers who might need them.

A woman in her 60s boarded with her husband and immediately pointed at the OP’s seat, insisting that she wanted that specific spot. The OP pointed out that several priority seats nearby were completely empty, but the woman continued lecturing them about respect and giving up seats for the elderly. Scroll down to see how the bizarre confrontation ended.

'They wanted my seat in a half empty bus'

Happened a while ago.

I got out of work, it was late, I’m was a medical assistant at the time and was exhausted from chasing after the provider on a understaffed day (as always)

I got on a bus after work and sat in the first row, and just wanted to melt for the next 10 mins.

It was late around 9pm so the bus was basically empty and usually stays pretty empty.

There was definitely less than 10 people in total for the entirety of my ride.

The bus has about 8 seats for wheelchairs elderly etc.

The other passengers were all sitting near the middle or rear. I was the only one in the front of the bus with the priority seats.

(This is in ny, the priority seats you can sit on but if someone who needs it comes on you give it up. ).

A Couple comes on, they were older maybe 60s?. Women points at me and goes “I’m going to sit there”

Me, confused af cos she wants my seat but there’s literally 30 other empty seats on the bus plus 7 other priority seats,

including the 2 seats next to me. (if the bus was full I woulda gave her my seat but there was PLENTY OF SEATS.

She was elderly looking but walking perfectly fine and able. if she had a walker I woulda gave have scooted over). Convo goes something like :

Me: “there is a seat next to Me”

Her: “no I want this seat” still pointing at my seat”.

Me: “there are empty seats on this bus”. Her: you’re suppose to give that to the elderly -point-.

Me; okay and the seat next to me is also priority. Her: I want your seat. Me: you have can at the priority seat across or next to me? they’re...

Her: starts going off on some tangent about how I’m not respectful. Some gibberish I cant remember much of-.

Her hubby also chimes with some words as well. I do remember at one point she spewed “I am privileged”. Im just staring that them so confused.

I wasn’t aware the MTA let you reserve seats in advance?. Baffled because all the seats around me were ALL EMPTY.

If it was more packed and she wanted my seat sure I’ll go to the back.

But it’s so bizarre how she thought she can demand a seat from me when the bus was basically empty.

I was so exhausted from work being on my feet for 9 hours like why should I have to move on

when I paid my fare and there’s plenty of other seats available and she just wanted to be a *privileged* Karen.

Her hubby also didn’t even pay a fare. Their card only had one ride the bus driver was nice enough to let them in.

They kept yapping nonsense in my face for minutes WHILE THR BUS IS MOVING so clearly if anything they’re okay standing.

After a while (I was halfway home) they finally moved to the middle of the bus and choose among the 30 other available seats.

Edit: they’re “priority seats” not exactly “ADA”

When someone has spent an exhausting day simply trying to get home, even a small confrontation can feel disproportionately irritating. The OP wasn’t refusing to give up a seat to someone who genuinely needed it. She was confused by being ordered out of a priority seat when numerous identical seats were completely empty.

The emotional tension came from the difference between access and entitlement. The OP understood the purpose of priority seating and even said she would have moved if the bus were crowded or the woman had needed additional space for a walker.

What made the encounter bizarre was that the woman appeared to believe that being older entitled her to one particular seat, rather than access to an appropriate seat. When the OP pointed out that several other priority seats were available, the response shifted from a practical request into accusations about respect and privilege.

There is also a psychological phenomenon that helps explain why seemingly trivial conflicts can become so stubborn. People sometimes attach symbolic meaning to a particular choice, so alternatives that are objectively equivalent no longer feel equivalent.

Once the woman decided that that specific seat represented what she deserved, being offered another seat could feel to her like being denied recognition rather than simply being offered a different place to sit.

Social psychologist Robert Cialdini’s research on social influence provides a useful framework here. His work describes how people respond to perceived social norms and expectations, particularly when they believe a certain behavior is required of others. His discussion of social influence and norms is summarized through Influence at Work.

That helps explain the strange insistence that the OP was being disrespectful. The woman appeared to have a mental rule that an older passenger should receive the specific front priority seat.

Once she believed the OP was violating that rule, the existence of empty alternatives became almost irrelevant. The disagreement stopped being about where anyone could sit and became about whether the OP was behaving according to the woman’s expectations.

There is another important distinction: priority seating is not the same as personal reservation. The OP was already permitted to sit there. The relevant obligation is generally to yield when someone who needs the priority accommodation boards, not to vacate it simply because another passenger prefers that particular location.

And because the bus was largely empty, moving the OP would not meaningfully improve access for the older passenger anyway.

The OP’s exhaustion matters too, although it doesn’t determine who was right. After nine hours on her feet, she reasonably wanted the short remainder of her commute to be quiet.

Asking someone to move is not inherently unreasonable, but continuing to argue for several minutes after being offered multiple equivalent seats is where the interaction became unnecessary.

Interestingly, the couple eventually demonstrated that those alternatives were perfectly adequate. They moved toward the middle and found one of the many empty seats that had been available from the beginning.

The healthiest takeaway isn’t that older passengers should never ask younger passengers to move. Courtesy works both ways, and genuine mobility needs deserve consideration. The better principle is that accessibility should be based on need, not ownership of a particular seat.

The OP wasn’t refusing reasonable accommodation. She was questioning why accommodation had to mean surrendering one specific seat when the bus had plenty of others available.

Sometimes entitlement is most visible not when someone asks for something reasonable, but when they reject every reasonable alternative because they have already decided exactly what they are owed.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors saw the seat demand as pure entitlement and a needless power trip

Oldsoldierbear − "I want never gets"

sweetplantveal − She was clearly trying to power trip

Dragon_Queen_666 − "I want this seat. " "And I want a silent ride home, but we can't always have what we want. "

hazelpocket − how entitled do you have to be to think you can demand someone else's seat when there are tons of other options?

These commenters favored ignoring unreasonable passengers when plenty of other seats were available

jimmywhereareya − I was on an empty train one night, it was around 10pm.

A woman ( I'm also a woman) sat in the seat opposite me and glared at my bag which was on the seat next to me, then glared at me.

The entire carriage was empty. I just ignored her and carried on reading my book.

And honestly, if the train was running during peak time and the carriage had been busy

I wouldn't have put my bag on the empty seat next to me because I'm not an entitled arsehole

Medusa_7898 − I’d stay in my seat and pretend I don’t hear them.

These users argued that age alone does not automatically justify demanding special treatment

Ree1954 − There are many disabilities that are invisible: fibromyalgia, vision problems, joint replacements, balance issues etc.

Being “elderly” is not a disability in and off itself and neither is demanding elite services.

RogueGunny − I'm sorry, I'm almost 62 and I do not consider myself "elderly". She was def power tripping.

Dimitar_Todarchev − A loud, wet sounding, very stinky fart would have solved this.

This commenter wondered whether dementia might explain the woman’s strange behavior

metatus − maybe she had dementia....

Was refusing to move perfectly reasonable, or should courtesy toward an older passenger have ended the argument immediately? And would anyone have handled the “I am privileged” declaration without laughing?
