Woman Discovers Her Cousin Secretly Mocked Her, Then Cuts Off the Family Member She Trusted Most

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

The people we trust the most are often the ones who can hurt us the deepest.

One young woman thought she had finally found a safe place after leaving a difficult home situation, but the person who offered her support ended up becoming the source of her biggest betrayal.

After moving in with her cousin, she believed she had someone in her corner.

She helped with expenses, trusted him with her personal life, and considered him family.

But one night, while waiting outside his apartment, she heard words that completely shattered everything she thought she knew.

Young woman discovers her trusted cousin has been secretly humiliating her and must decide how to respond

'AITA for cutting off my cousin after catching him call me his ‘wallet with legs’ and laughing about how pathetic I am?'

So this has been eating me alive, and I need an outside perspective.

My cousin (21M) has always been like my best friend. I (19F) moved out

of my mom’s place a while ago because she’s toxic (story for another

time), and my cousin offered me a place to stay. For the first month,

everything seemed fine — I helped with rent, bought food, and we got along.

Then a few nights ago, I was hanging out with my boyfriend late at night.

I didn’t have the apartment key because my cousin had it. I called him,

and he told me to come pick it up. He sent me his location. I asked him to

come outside with it, but he texted me saying he was “too drunk” and I

should just come in myself.

When I arrived, I could hear him inside talking with some people —

including some of my ex-friends. I stayed outside and listened for almost

an hour. What I heard completely broke me. He was mocking me, saying:

•“She’s just my wallet with legs.”

•“She’s pathetic and naive, so easy to use.”

•”Nobody actually likes her, she’s just a burden.”

•“Even her own mom doesn’t want her, why would anyone else?”

•“She’s stupid, worthless, nothing.”. And they all laughed. My cousin —

the person I trusted most — was leading the whole thing.

I recorded it. I texted my boyfriend, who told me to grab the key and

leave. So I pretended I had just arrived, turned on my flashlight, walked

in, and asked where the key was. He didn’t even look at me and just said,

“On the table.” I grabbed it and told him, “I heard everything.”. Back at

the apartment, I packed all my things in under an hour and left.

The next morning, he texted asking if I had really moved out. I told him

yes, and that he’s no longer my family. He tried gaslighting me, saying I

“must’ve misheard,” but I told him I had the recording. He never responded after that.

Now some people are saying I should forgive him because he’s “family.”

But I honestly don’t think I should. He betrayed me, humiliated me,

never admitted it, never apologized. To me, family isn’t blood — it’s

trust.. So, AITA for cutting him off completely?

Update 1:

First of all, thank you so much for all your responses. Reading your

comments and advice really helped me process this. Honestly, I didn't

expect such support, and it means a lot to me.

Update: This all happened today and I just learned a lot of new details.

It turns out that when all this was happening, there were more people

there than I initially thought. Besides my cousin, my boyfriend's cousin

and his girlfriend were also there—and even my own brother and his

girlfriend. I didn't see them because they were inside, but I found out

later thanks to my sister. She texted my cousin directly asking what had

happened, and that's how I found out who was really there.

My boyfriend is furious with his cousin and has completely cut him off—

and with good reason. Not only did my cousin talk about me behind my

back, but my boyfriend's cousin also joined in, mocking and insulting me,

which made the situation even worse. My boyfriend couldn't stand it and

decided to break up with him immediately. I also cut off contact with my brother.

We found out about all this because my boyfriend texted my cousin

asking for an explanation—why he said those terrible things and why he

did it. My cousin simply denied everything and said, "I misheard." My

boyfriend also contacted his cousin for an explanation, but he never responded.

The good news is that I've blocked both my cousin and my brother. I

don't want either of them in my life. I have the support of my partner,

and honestly, that's enough for now.

I also need to clarify something important: I've had massive trust issues

for a long time. I don't have close friends with whom I feel safe sharing

personal things, which is why I mentioned in my original post that there

were "friends" out there—but I never really trusted them deeply. Same

thing with my brother: I never really trusted him because he'd lied to me

and done similar shit in the past. That's why we were never close, and

that's why the betrayal hurt so much.

My family doesn't know what happened, except for my sister. She's very

close to me and has always been my safe space. She knows how much it

hurt me and was there for me when I broke down, crying over what my

cousin did and said. Honestly, her presence was the only thing that kept

me from completely breaking down.

One more thing I forgot to mention in my first post: I had a piggy bank at

my cousin's. There was about $230 in it. When I was packing my things, I

counted them and realized about $70 was missing. So yes—he stole

from me too. My boyfriend confronted him about the money, but of

course, my cousin denied it. I have no proof he took it, but the only

people who had access to the apartment were him, my boyfriend's

cousin, and his cousin's girlfriend.

So now I'm not only betrayed, humiliated, and lied to, but also robbed by

someone I trusted most. At this point, I feel like completely cutting them

all out of my life was the only choice—and honestly, I feel liberated,

finally taking back control of my own life.

Thank you for your support and I will let you know if anything happens.

Update 2

I went to pick up the rest of my stuff... my cousin, his friends, and more lies.

So I went back to my apartment today to grab the rest of my stuff. My

cousin was home, but I still had a key, so I let myself in.

I just wanted to grab my things and leave, but he wouldn't let me.

Instead, he told me to sit down because he "wanted to talk." He started

saying that "none of this happened" and that "I must have misheard

everything." When I played him the recording, he simply denied that it

was him talking at all. He actually tried to convince me that I was

"making it up in my head." Classic gaslighting.

I told him I didn't want to hear any more lies—I'd heard enough already. I

just wanted the rest of my things so I could leave for good. Instead, he

suddenly became angry, ordered me out of the apartment, and refused to give me my things back.

And then, to make matters worse, my boyfriend's cousin and his

girlfriend showed up. They immediately backed him up, ordered me to

hand over my key, and demanded I leave. I was completely alone—I had

no one with me because my boyfriend was at work, and I didn't want to

drag anyone else into this mess. Honestly, I felt like they were ganging

up on me, three against one, trying to intimidate me into leaving without my own things.

I left because I didn't feel safe, but now I'm furious. My stuff is still there,

and they're holding it hostage. I don't even know if I should go back

there alone, because they clearly aren't going to give it up without a

major upset. At this point, I'm seriously considering getting the police involved to get my stuff back.

Update 3

Thank you all so much for your advice and suggestions. The support I’ve

gotten here has honestly meant the world to me.

Now for the update:

About two hours after they forced me out of the apartment, I decided I

was done playing games and went to the police. By complete chance,

one of the officers on duty that night was actually a friend of my toxic

mother (yeah, ironic as hell), but unlike her, he was surprisingly kind and decided to help me out.

I explained everything in detail, showed him receipts and proof that the

items I needed to collect from the apartment were mine, and he agreed to come with me.

We went back to the apartment. My cousin let us in, and the officer

immediately demanded that he return my belongings. Of course, my

cousin tried to lie and say those things were his and that I had “no right”

to take them. But the officer shut him down instantly, pointing out that I

had receipts and proof that everything was mine. At that point, my

cousin had no choice but to hand my things over.

And here’s the kicker: while handing me my stuff, he actually said he

didn’t regret anything he had said about me. No apology. No remorse. Just more cruelty.

I told him right then that I was glad I had blocked him, glad I cut him out

of my life, because I deserve so much better than the way he treated me.

After that, I left the apartment with the officer and moved everything

into my new place — far away from my cousin and the rest of my toxic family.

One more thing: I sent the recording of what he said to everyone in my

family and my friends. Anyone who still defended him even after hearing

it got blocked immediately. No excuses anymore.

So that’s it. That’s where this story ends. I have my things back, I have my

peace, and I’ve cut out the people who never truly cared about me. And

again — thank you all so much for your support. You guys made me feel

less alone in this mess, and I’m really grateful for that.

On top of all that, my boyfriend has been amazing through all of this. He

didn’t want me to feel alone after cutting off so much family, so he

surprised me with a puppy as a gift. He also told me he’s moving in with

me to the new apartment, because he wants to build a safe, supportive

life together. Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a better partner — and

having him by my side makes me feel like I finally have the family I always needed.

The people we trust most are often the ones we expect to protect us, not the ones we expect to hurt us.

When someone outside our circle treats us badly, it is painful.

But when someone who offered us a home, support, and the title of “family” secretly tears us down, it can completely change the way we see relationships.

For OP, the heartbreak was not just hearing cruel words.

It was realizing that the person she believed was her safe place had been presenting a completely different version of himself behind her back.

Her cousin was not a stranger making an insensitive comment; he was someone who invited her into his home, accepted her help, and benefited from her trust.

Hearing him describe her as a “wallet with legs” transformed their relationship from one built on family loyalty into one that felt transactional and exploitative.

A different way to view OP’s decision is that cutting contact was not simply an angry reaction.

Many people believe family connections should survive anything, but healthy relationships are not maintained by blood alone.

They survive through respect, accountability, and genuine care. OP had already experienced abandonment and instability in her life, which made the betrayal especially painful.

The person who was supposed to prove that family could be safe instead reinforced the fear that people close to her could use her kindness against her.

This perspective explains why OP’s choice to leave was understandable.

She was not cutting someone off because of one rude comment. She was responding to a pattern: humiliation, denial, refusal to apologize, and eventually difficulty retrieving her own belongings.

The repeated attempts to convince her that she “misheard” also created another layer of harm because it dismissed her reality instead of acknowledging the damage caused.

At the same time, situations involving family conflict can be emotionally complicated.

People often feel pressure to forgive because of shared history, but forgiveness does not automatically mean restoring access to someone’s life.

A person can let go of anger while still deciding that distance is necessary.

OP’s story shows that family is not only defined by who shares your DNA.

Sometimes family is the person who believes you, supports you, and helps you rebuild after others tear you down.

Protecting yourself from people who repeatedly choose cruelty is not selfish.

It is an act of recognizing your own worth and refusing to accept a relationship where love only exists when you are useful.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters supported cutting contact because family ties do not excuse cruelty, disrespect, or humiliation

leslieramon − NTA- Stay away from that person. Being family doesn't

give your cousin the right to hurt you and mock you. If it costs you your

peace, walk away! I am sorry you are going through that.

romyceleste09 − Heck no you're NTA! Cut off his cruel backstabbing

b__t. I don't agree with the argument that you should forgive someone

"because they're family. " If anything that makes it so much worse.

Family is supposed to have your back and love you, if a stranger said that

stuff it'd be much easier to dismiss family should be held to a higher

standard for how they treat you. It's not wrong to expect family to love

you and care for you. Forget him.

SportySue60 − NTA - you stay very far away from people like that. What

he said was mean as well as disrespectful… I would maybe be more

willing to forgive him IF and thats a big IF he had apologized but he

doubled down and tried to say you hadn’t understood him correctly.

I noticed his silence when you told him you hadn’t misunderstood - you

have the recording… Family isn’t everything when they call you a wallet with legs!

Mr-CuriousL − "Family" does not excuse anyone from insulting other

family members. What he said was extremely rude. And if you clearly

heard that he is talking about you, there is no reason for you to keep

contact with such a rude person. So clearly you're NTA.

This group argued that true family is built on love and trust, not simply shared blood

ClevelandWomble − He can't be family because that's not how family behaves.

ShopGirl1974 − I'm sorry but blood does not make you family. Family is

what you build that you love & trust!

ChampionshipBetter91 − You know what blood family is? The result of

coincidence. True family takes time & trust. You can trust that this guy is not your true family.

Ok_Feedback514 − I hate that saying he/she is family you should forgive

them. That’s utter b__lshit. Family doesn’t disrespect you family doesn’t

belittle you, family doesn’t humiliate you and here’s a big one FAMILY

DOESNT USE YOU. You know what you have to do and that’s go NC and

if anyone tells you otherwise go LC with them.

NTA and I sorry your family is a bunch of funky buttholes

These users believed the cousin viewed OP as a source of money rather than someone he genuinely respected

Jillio_NH − NTA. Tell them you are not family to him. You are just a wallet with legs to him.

okileggs1992 − NTA, you don't have to forgive him for being abusive

towards you and using you for money. Now he can grow up. Block the

people stating you should forgive him because he's family. You don't

need to forgive him, but he does need to apologize for his behavior.

OP spent years believing her cousin was one of the few people she could trust, only to discover that the person offering her a home was secretly humiliating her and taking advantage of her kindness.

Cutting him off was not an overreaction, it was a response to betrayal, cruelty, and the refusal to take accountability.

True family is built through respect and loyalty, not simply shared blood.

Do you think OP was right to walk away completely, or should she have given her cousin a chance to apologize and repair the relationship? Share your thoughts below.
