Woman Falls in Love With Gifted Wedding Dress, Until Aunt Reveals Her Hidden Plan

A wedding dress is not just a piece of fabric.

For many people, it represents a dream, a memory, and something they get to keep from one of the biggest days of their lives.

That is why it can hurt deeply when someone treats it like an item that can simply be passed around.

The original poster (OP) was grateful when her aunt offered her a beautiful wedding gown that had never been worn.

Since OP and her fiancé were paying for their wedding themselves, owning a dress felt like a special gift she never thought she could have.

However, just days before her wedding, her aunt made an unexpected request that changed the way OP felt about the dress.

Read on to find out why a generous gesture suddenly left OP feeling heartbroken.

Bride receives a wedding dress as a gift, only to learn days before her wedding that her aunt expects her to give it back

not the actual photo

'Aita for refusing to give up my wedding dress the day after the wedding?'

So first some context I'm getting married this Saturday and my fiance and I

are paying the wedding ourselves well, most of it, there's been some

presents here and there, like the liquor from my parents (they insisted) and

in from my aunt (whom I have a bit of a tense relationship with) she gave

me my wedding gown the thing about the wedding gown is, it used to

belong to my cousin (which is one of my bridesmaids) she was about to get

married but they broke things off because he was cheating, but that's another story.

My aunt bought this wedding dress for her and it was brand new, it was

never used and they had it sitting on their closet for about a year or two,

when she found out I was getting married She got as excited as if I was her

daughter as well and told about the dress asking me if i wanted it. It's not

the dress I invisioned to but since we are paying the wedding ourselves and

my fiance said that I was going to have to rent a dress because we don't

have the money to buy one and I was really sad about that because I

wanted to own my own dress I said yes and once I tried it on I fell in love with it.

She gave me that dress as a gift and to alter as I saw fit, but like I said I fell

in love with it as it was, but I should've known that dress came with strings,

yesterday I was coming back from a trip visiting my parents and when I got

off of plane I found a voicemail from my aunt she told me that another of

my cousins is getting married and she was asking if I could give her my

dress the day after the wedding so she could tear it apart and take the lace

of it and do with the dress as she wanted for her wedding and it broke me.

This cousin in particular is the favorite of everyone sometimes even of my

own parents when we were younger, mostly because she is really

charismatic and also she's white and blonde and I'm a little on the darker

side, you can imagine, I don't have any rivalry with her, I adore her and I

knew she wouldn't want this wedding dress because I already talked to her

about the style of the wedding that she wanted and how shewanted

something more Bohemian on the beach so I know she wasn't the one to

ask for this it was just my aunt.

Still my wedding is this Saturday and I feel like it's the worst timing for my

aunt to say this, because I wouldn't be against sharing my wedding dress I

was dreaming of maybe someday I can give it to one of my cousins or

maybe to my goddaughter someone that like me wasn't able to buy their

own wedding dress and they can have this one, and to have that option

taken away from me and to feel like I was given something just to be taken

away even before I could use it, I don't know if I'm being irrational here but

this has given me a lot of sadness now when I think about the wedding

dress and when I think of my wedding and I'm trying really hard to be

happy and be excited this is my wedding week for god sakes, oh and on top

of that my cousin lives in another country and will beI leaving like three

days after the wedding so my aunt wanted me to give it to her the day

after I get married and I think that also affects me because I don't get to

have my wedding dress the day after the wedding, i just wanted to be able

to take my wedding dress back to my home and have it in my closet and I

know it's stupid but I've always wanted to have my wedding dress and be

able to decide what to do with it so, what do y'all think.

Many people understand that meaningful objects are rarely just objects. A wedding dress is not only fabric, lace, and alterations.

For many brides, it represents a personal milestone, a physical reminder of a day they worked hard to create, and something they hoped to keep as part of their own story.

In OP’s situation, the pain does not seem to come from the idea of sharing a dress itself. It comes from realizing that something she believed was truly hers may have been given with an expectation attached.

OP accepted the dress because it solved a difficult emotional and financial problem.

She had already imagined having her own wedding gown but could not comfortably afford one, and this gift allowed her to feel that special connection.

After trying it on, she did not simply see a secondhand dress. She saw her wedding dress.

That emotional attachment developed naturally, which is why the timing of her aunt’s request feels so painful.

A different perspective is that the aunt may not have viewed the dress in the same way.

She may have seen it as a valuable family item that could continue creating memories for another relative.

Since the dress originally belonged to OP’s cousin, her aunt may have felt some personal connection or ownership over its future.

However, once the dress was given to OP as a gift and she was told she could alter it as she wanted, the decision should have belonged to OP.

The issue becomes even more sensitive because of the timing.

Asking for the dress back immediately after the wedding, before OP has even had the chance to celebrate, wear it, or store it away, can make the gesture feel less like sharing a family treasure and more like temporarily borrowing something that was never fully hers.

This explains why OP’s sadness is understandable.

From the outside, someone might see a dress that can simply be reused or redesigned.

But emotionally, OP is grieving the loss of control over a symbol of one of the biggest days of her life.

The dress represented independence, especially because she and her fiancé worked hard to pay for their wedding themselves.

OP is not wrong for wanting to keep the dress. She can love her cousin, appreciate her aunt’s generosity, and still say no.

Those feelings can exist together. A gift should create happiness, not leave the recipient feeling obligated or anxious.

A reasonable response would be something simple: “I’m so grateful you gave me this dress, and I truly appreciate what it meant for my wedding.

But I’ve always dreamed of keeping my wedding dress afterward, so I’m going to hold onto it.”

Sometimes protecting a meaningful moment is not selfish. It is simply recognizing that some things are allowed to belong to you.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters centered their arguments on ownership and the meaning of a gift

Canadian-gal1733 − NTA…… Absolutely not. Did she not give it to you as

your wedding gift from her? ?? You don’t then ask the bride to return the

gift! Don’t give up the dress! Politely remind her that she gifted you that

dress, and you want to now save it for if you have a daughter of your own to pass it down to.

Just tell her how much the dress means to you, and as it was a gift, you

don’t feel the need to now give it to someone else. Keep the dress! ! She’s

being horrible and frankly rude to expect you to give it to your cousin to tear apart.

Keep it and cherish it, until YOU decide to give it away to someone of your choosing.

EnonnieMoss1 − NTA - It's not stupid. Call the cousin that doesn't really

want the dress, tell her you'd like to keep it if she doesn't really want it.

This charming cousin can tell Auntie that she thought Auntie was giving the

dress to you as a gift and she doesn't want to disappoint you by taking it

because she knows how much this gift meant to you.

Congratulations on your wedding! A lifetime of happiness filled with love

for and from your partner is the best gift of all. Enonnie Moss ❤️

Less-Buddy3234 − NTA a gift is a gift without conditions to be added later!

Do not respond to her at this time and enjoy your wedding day! Address it

after the wedding! If your cousin really wants and needs it and you decide

you want to give it to her after talking with her and taking the time to think

it over, there is always shipping available.

Enjoy your wedding day. Please update me.

Littlest_Newt − NTAH, this is a GIFT! Your aunt gave it to you. Explain to

your cousin this was a gift for your wedding, not a loan. If your cousin is

even a little bit a good person, she won't ask for it again. If she still wants it,

you know she is very entitled and doesn't care for you.

So you can refuse with peace of heart. Finally, if anyone gives you a hard

time do this: ask them to give back all the gifts you gave through the years.

After all, they are pretending a gift can be taken back. So yours too.

This group suggested speaking directly with the cousin instead of letting the aunt control the situation

JadieJang − OP, that's SOOOOOO tacky! You aren't even married yet and

she's already disposing of the dress SHE GAVE YOU. Text her back and say

"AUNT'S NAME, I'm very hurt and offended that you gifted me a dress, and

are now taking it back and gifting it to someone else.

You gifted it to me; the dress is mine now, and I will decide what happens

to it. \I\ will contact COUSIN'S NAME and discuss it with her; it is no longer

your concern. This is my final word on the subject. " Then do contact your

cousin and ask her what's going on.

Don't offer her the dress, ASK her "AUNT'S NAME gifted me FIRST

COUSIN'S NAME'S dress and now she's saying she wants to take it back and

give it to you. Did you know this? " Don't be accusatory, but also don't

frame it in a way that makes it seem that you're okay with it.

DianaBJammin − NTA- I would talk w said cousin to see if she even wants

the dress. She could have just told your aunt yes cause she didn't want to be rude.

Particular-Try5584 − NTA. Talk to your cousin, find out if this is coming from

them (or a giddy aunt pushing for it)… and whether there’s any chance

they’d let you buy a few metres of gorgeous lace instead… do a deal direct

with the cousin, don’t talk to the aunt about it.

And when she agrees, and you close the deal, announce on the family

group chat so EVERYONE KNOWS that the dress is yours, and your cousin

has a deal with you “Crisis averted folks, thank you so much Cassie for your

amazing generosity, I’m so glad we were able to help each other out! The dress is saved!

I get to have my dream, and Cassie hers! I’m buying her imported Italian

lace that better suits her design aesthetic, and this dress is staying with me in return!

I’ve got plans for it too <3 What a special gift from Aunt Merle, that keeps

on giving… it’s brought Cassie and i closer together, it’s come with great

family love, and will stay with me for my daughter <3 So much joy! !!” And

…. let them shut up.

Put that dress somewhere damn safe after, you know Aunt Merle is going

to keep shopping it out to all the cousins forever more.

Lucy-lucky100 − I agree you shouldn’t give it to your aunt. Maybe you

should approach her and say you’ll talk to your cousin after the wedding

and the two of you can come up with a solution. That way, the aunt has no

say in the matter. Also, if the cousin wants something totally different you two can discuss it.

I bet she doesn’t really want it anyway.

These commenters focused on the emotional damage caused by the aunt’s request

Sassy-Peanut − Your aunt is horrible - she's ruining the spirit of your

wedding and of you being a bride. You will be reminded of this fiasco every

time you look at your wedding photos. Buy an off-the-peg, simple

inexpensive gown you love \[there are plenty about and there is time\] -

one which is yours and no one can demand you return it.

Update us and go NC with n__ty aunty.

holisarcasm − I would approach the aunt and say, I’m confused, I thought

you gave me the dress as a gift which I could alter as needed?  Gifts

become property of the receiver. Now it sounds like you want the dress

back, which means it isn’t a gift. Did I misunderstand?

If it’s not a gift for me to keep, then take it as it would destroy me to see it

ripped apart right after I wore it for my wedding, like a curse upon my

marriage. Make her feel how insulting the request is.  Plus points if you get

teary eyed during the curse upon my marriage part.

A wedding dress may be fabric, but for many people it represents a once-in-a-lifetime memory, a choice, and a piece of their own story.

OP accepted the dress because it was gifted to her, not because she agreed to pass it around before she even wore it.

Some may say sharing a meaningful item is a kind gesture, while others believe her aunt crossed a boundary by treating a gift like a loan.

Do you think OP should honor her aunt’s request, or is she right to keep her dress for herself? Share your thoughts below!
