Woman Frames Her Old IUD As A Trophy, But Her Boyfriend Thinks It Goes Too Far

People often have very different ideas about what counts as meaningful, funny, or strange when it comes to personal keepsakes. Something one person sees as a hilarious reminder of a major life experience can feel completely unusual to someone else, especially when it involves a medical item.

The original poster (OP) decided to keep her old IUD after going through a painful replacement procedure and wanted to display it as a quirky reminder of what she experienced.

However, her boyfriend was not exactly on board with the idea of turning their bathroom into a small medical memorabilia display. Read on to see how Reddit reacted to this unusual relationship debate and whether OP’s keepsake idea crossed a line.

A woman wants to display her old IUD as a personal trophy after a painful procedure, but her boyfriend thinks it is inappropriate for their bathroom

'My (23F) boyfriend (26M) won’t let me hang up my framed IUD in the bathroom?!'

My (23F) bf (26M) of 3 years doesn’t want me to hang up my framed IUD in the bathroom.

I got my IUD replaced today and asked my doctor if I can keep the one she is removing as a memento.

This was my first IUD ever and was easily the most physically painful experience I’ve ever had.

I’ve seen a couple women keep their IUD and other medical devices as a way to feel proud of what they’ve done but also as a fun keep sake.

Now that I’ve gone through a SECOND insertion and have my original IUD in my possession,

I think it would be fun and silly to make a mini frame and hang it up in our bathroom. We don’t have any roommates, it’s just us two.

He thinks it’s weird for me to hang it up instead of keeping it tucked away but I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.

If anything it’s reminder of what women have to go through for pregnancy prevention. It’s like a trophy to me.

Is it weird if I hang up my IUD in our bathroom?

The things people choose to keep often carry meanings that outsiders cannot immediately see. An object that looks strange or unnecessary to one person can represent strength, survival, humor, or a personal milestone to another. In this situation, the OP’s framed IUD is not really about decorating a bathroom with a medical device.

It represents her experience, her body, and the emotional significance of going through something painful while taking responsibility for her reproductive choices.

The emotional conflict comes from two people attaching completely different meanings to the same object. For the OP, the IUD is almost like a small trophy. It reminds her of enduring a physically difficult procedure and making a choice about her own health. Turning it into a humorous display is a way of reclaiming an experience that was uncomfortable.

Her boyfriend, however, appears to see it from a practical or aesthetic perspective. To him, a medical device in a shared bathroom may feel unusual or uncomfortable rather than meaningful. Neither reaction is automatically wrong, but they are coming from different emotional viewpoints.

A fresh perspective is that this disagreement is also about ownership and shared space. The IUD came from the OP’s body, so she has a personal connection to it that her boyfriend does not share. At the same time, a bathroom in a shared home is a common environment, meaning both partners naturally have opinions about what becomes part of that space.

The deeper question is not whether the IUD is “weird.” Many personal items are unusual. The question is whether both partners can respect each other’s feelings while negotiating a shared home.

Psychologist and author Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo has discussed how people attach emotional meaning to objects based on personal experiences, memories, and identity. She explains that meaningful possessions can serve as reminders of important moments because they represent personal stories rather than their physical value alone.

This insight helps explain why the OP feels so strongly about displaying the IUD. Her boyfriend may only see a piece of medical equipment, but she sees evidence of endurance, bodily autonomy, and a moment in her life worth remembering.

At the same time, his discomfort does not necessarily mean he dismisses what she went through. He may simply not connect with the object in the same way.

The healthiest approach may be finding a compromise that respects both perspectives. The OP could display it somewhere more personal, create a smaller keepsake, or even turn it into a humorous conversation piece in a space where both people feel comfortable. The goal does not have to be deciding who is right.

Relationships often involve moments where one person says, “This means something important to me,” while the other says, “I don’t see it the same way.” Those moments are opportunities to understand each other better.

After all, the value of a meaningful object comes from the story behind it, not whether everyone else immediately understands why it matters.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters believed shared spaces require both partners to agree on decorations

rhapsodypenguin − I get it, and I think it’s funny, but a shared living space is just that, and should avoid any decoration that either one of you is strongly...

Doesn’t seem like the hill to die on.

Active_Win_3656 − I mean, I’m a woman whos had an IUD (that I found very painful). I personally wouldn’t want to hang it up in my bathroom.

Do I think it’s wrong? No. Can you hang it up? Sure. But if it’s a shared bathroom, I think it requires two yes’s.

I’d see if there’s another way to honor the experience or ask if something deeper is bothering you about your relationship that this IUD represents

Sweet_Newt4642 − It doesn't really matter if we think it's weird. That's irrelevant.

What IS relevant is that your boyfriend, who you share this space with, doesn't want it hung up.

And he gets a say in shared spaces as well. So no you shouldn't hang it up in a shared space.

Maleficent_Web_6034 − Decor in shared spaces generally requires all living there to agree on it. He doesn't want that decor in the bathroom.

If you want to hang your decor somewhere, hang it in a space more personal to you like your nightstand or desk.

Living together requires compromise and respect from both partners.

As for my personal opinion, I think it could be a funny piece of art for a private ensuite, but not for a single bathroom apartment where guests come use...

Your s__ life is not going to be funny to anyone but you guys, sorry.

These users considered the IUD decoration unusual but respected OP’s personal choice

tgrdem − I'm a pretty open minded woman, but that's a bit weird.

Top_Philosopher1809 − Yes it is weird.

These commenters suggested keeping personal keepsakes in private areas instead of shared rooms

breezybbh − I don’t agree that THIS is a reason to break up with someone per a previous commenter. I mean… I think it’s a little weird, lol.

Not because it’s an IUD specifically, but because most people don’t decorate a shared bathroom with old medical devices.

If it were tucked away as a keepsake, I’d say go for it.

But if my spouse wanted to frame an old catheter, wisdom tooth, or surgical hardware and hang it on the wall, I’d probably say no too.

It’s your IUD and you have every right to keep it, but I also think your boyfriend gets a say in what gets displayed in a space you both share.

FiorinasFury − My partner and I credit having separate bathrooms as the key to our happy relationship.

While I personally love your taste, if you're sharing a bathroom with him, he gets a say in how it's decorated.

Save it for when you have a space to call your own.

These users emphasized respecting a partner’s discomfort when living together

redqueen898 − It really doesn't matter what anyone in the comments or anywhere else think about this.

Your partner, *the person that you live with and share the space with*, is uncomfortable with your idea and doesnt want that displayed in a shared space.

Whether others find that weird or not isnt relevant because *he does*, and he is the one that loves with you.

KateMacDonaldArts − Yes, if you do it in spite of the person you live with and apparently whose opinion you should care about.

Would a private display preserve the meaning, or should the boyfriend accept one tiny unconventional frame? Is the keepsake charming, unsettling, or both at once? Share the verdict below.
