Woman Kicks Out Friend’s Plus-One After Catching Her Eating The Cat’s Dinner

Sometimes you hear a story so strange you have to read it twice. One Redditor, dealing with grief, job stress, and a chaotic month, prepared a simple salmon dinner, not for herself, but for her beloved cat. When her friend arrived for a night out, she brought someone new along… who immediately ate the salmon after being told it was for the cat.

Calling out the behavior led to tears, accusations of “fat shaming,” and a meltdown where the guest tried to flip the blame. By the next morning, the Redditor was getting angry messages from the woman’s boyfriend claiming she was a monster.

Was she wrong for kicking the guest out and demanding replacement food, or was this the kind of boundary anyone would defend? Keep reading to decide for yourself.

A woman gets upset when her friend’s guest eats her cat’s food, leading to a confrontation

'AITA for “embarassing” my friends friend for eating my cats food?'

So I (25f) have had an extremely busy last few weeks. All in the space of about a month,

I’ve had my dad pass away, the funeral, lost my job and had to quickly find another and have moved back into my flat after renovations finished.

I think it’s safe to say I’m exhausted, because of this I’ve forgotten to do a lot of things that aren’t important

but one thing I forgot about was stocking up on cat food for my little Tammy.

She has a strict food routine, biscuits in the morning and wet food at night, not a lot of biscuits though and I steer clear of foods containing jelly.

She’s healthy and happy and listens because of this routine.

I keep frozen fish in my freezer for her as a treat every now and then or for the rare occasion

that I don’t have any cat food in for her, I’ll give her that and then go and get some food the next day.

She’s never gone without and she never will, I have a very busy life but I will always take care of my little baby, she’s my world and I adore...

This all happened last night, because of how s__t my life has been recently my friend Courtney (25f)

offered to take me on a night out to take my mind off things and vent, gossip and drink and dance and whatever else I want to do (in her...

I was hesitant but she insisted and I decided it might be nice to just let loose for one night and forget about s__t, so I said yes.

Yesterday morning I realised I didn’t have any wet food left for Tammy

because I forgot to stock up because of how busy and tired I’ve been,

so at around 2ish I thawed some salmon and cooked it about 20 minutes before Courtney arrived.

I then left it on the side to cool down so I can give it to Tammy before we left to go out.

Courtney arrived and had brought a friend with her, which was fine I didn’t care.

I said hello, we had a bit of a chat and introduction, she asked why there was a plate of salmon on the kitchen counter and I told her it...

I asked Courtney to quickly come into my bedroom with me to zip up my dress and put some false lashes on for me

as I’m terrible at that, and when we came back into the kitchen,

I was in disbelief to see Courtney’s friend stood over the kitchen counter eating the salmon I had cooked for Tammy.

I immediately got upset and questioned her, I said “what the f__k are you doing” she said she was hungry

and I told her there’s a whole fridge and 3 cupboards full of food why would you eat my cats dinner?

She said “well it was right there and she’s just a cat they eat scraps and stuff some cats go days without eating she’ll be fine”

I said well that’s not my cat, I don’t starve her, that’s all I had for her to eat tonight because I’m getting cat food tomorrow.

This b__ch then had the nerve to say “well sorry you should be more prepared if you have a pet you should have back up food” I said I did,...

Courtney then chimed in and said to her friend that I don’t normally forget about cat food but I’ve had a lot on my plate recently,

she then said “it’s not fair you’ve said that, you shouldn’t have eaten it and also it’s just kind of weird anyway to just start eating someone’s food

that’s sat on the side” I agreed and then this girl started getting upset and saying I was embarrassing her

and that it’s just a cat and I was making her feel s__tty and fat.

I said, “I never called you fat, and the only person embarrassing you is you when you decided to shovel my cat's dinner in your trap when I wasn’t there.

Where do you get the nerve to come into my flat, eat my cats dinner and then try to insinuate I’m a bad cat owner?”

I then told her the corner shop near here closes soon, I’d appreciate it if you quickly went and got another piece of salmon so my cat can eat tonight,

and then after that get the f__k out of my flat. She looked at Courtney for support and was all like “really?”

Courtney was like “to be fair she did tell you it was for her cat like why would you do that?

If you were hungry just say and we could have had something before we go out” she ended up leaving in a huff and muttering to herself.

About 20 minutes later she buzzed my flat number to say the salmon is at the door, then she left.

Courtney and I still went out, we just had to wait another half an hour so I could feed Tammy.

At some point in the night I asked Courtney where she got such a weird friend, she said she’s a friend from work but I had no idea she was...

This morning I woke up with a bit of a hangover, to about 20 Facebook messages from some guy who turned out to be weirdos boyfriend,

calling me a bully, a thief, telling me I can’t just go around accusing people of doing such strange things

(something tells me she hasn’t told her boyfriend the whole story),

he also said she’s been crying all night. Courtney told me she got similar messages and that she feels kind of bad

and that we maybe ganged up on her a bit. I said I don’t care, I’m not responding and she can cry all she wants.

Truth be told I do feel slightly bad but like why would you go into someone’s place and start eating the food they put out for their pet?

It’s just weird to me. Aita?

In this situation, the OP’s reaction is rooted in the emotional stress they’ve been under, combined with a sense of personal violation. With everything going on in their life, dealing with the recent loss of their father, job changes, and living through a period of exhaustion, it’s clear that their cat, Tammy, is a source of comfort and stability.

The OP’s attachment to their cat’s routine is not just about feeding her; it’s also about maintaining control over an area of their life that brings them peace amidst chaos.

When Courtney’s friend ate the salmon meant for Tammy, it wasn’t just about the food. The OP had taken time to prepare something for their pet, and that sense of care and responsibility was dismissed. What might have seemed like an innocent or thoughtless action to the friend was, to the OP, an act of disregard for something that mattered deeply to them.

The OP’s frustration was amplified by the fact that no one else in the situation stepped in to support them, especially when the friend defended her actions with comments that undermined the OP’s role as a pet owner. The situation triggered a deeper emotional response, feeling not just disrespected but also isolated in a moment where they needed support.

From a psychological perspective, this situation can be seen as a conflict of emotional boundaries. According to Positive Psychology, personal boundaries are crucial to maintaining emotional well-being.

When someone crosses those boundaries, whether it’s eating someone else’s food or disregarding their wishes, it can cause a strong emotional reaction because it feels like a violation of personal space and respect. The OP’s reaction was not simply about the food; it was about maintaining their dignity in a situation where they felt their boundaries were ignored.

In this case, the OP’s response was understandable, though it may have been a bit sharp. The friend’s actions were inconsiderate, but it’s important to remember that, while the OP was justified in being upset, there could have been room for a gentler approach.

However, the friend’s failure to acknowledge the boundaries the OP set, and her continued defensiveness, likely made the OP feel further isolated, which led to the stronger reaction.

In the end, while it’s clear that the OP felt wronged, it’s also important to acknowledge that the emotional intensity of the situation stemmed from the cumulative stress they were dealing with. Sometimes, the smallest things can trigger a larger emotional response when people are already stretched thin.

Redditors absolutely backed the OP’s frustration:

This group highlighted the absurdity of the situation

Dachshundmom5 − "Dude, your GF stole and ate my cats food. After being told it was my cats food. It's jot my problem she's a thief that steals from cats."

nousernamesleft24 − Lmao you bullied her? No, you reacted to a stranger coming into your home,

disregarding what you said, eating food left on the counter and then insulting your pet ownership. You went way softer than I would have too. NTA.

Pleasant-Koala147 − NTA. She embarrassed herself. I’d message her boyfriend back and tell him you don’t know what she’s told him

but she ate the food that you had specifically told her was for the cat and then suggested that you allow your cat to starve.

Then block him. Neither of you bullied this woman. You simply responded with an appropriate level of incredulity for the situation.

The fact she felt bad about it shows she knows she was wrong.

unicornasaurus-rex8 − What the f__k? Since when a friend’s friend acts like a friend? Eat in your own house like no deal without respect?

I don’t want be friends with her. NTA.

These commenters focused on the ridiculousness of eating someone else’s food without permission, regardless of it being meant for a pet

Salamanderonthefarm − “…a bully and a thief.” The projection is hilarious. Very obviously NTA, or as Tammy would say miaouw miaouw miaouw

wetcherri − NTA. It doesn't even matter that it was for your cat; who the hell thinks it is okay to start eating someone else's food without permission??

No matter what anyone else thinks, she is 110% T A for eating anything you own. I can't imagine the entitlement of this woman.

Does she go to every stranger's house and eat their food without permission?

thesnarkypotatohead − Who the hell eats a plate of presumably unseasoned salmon in the house of a person they just met,

even if they don’t know it’s spoken for? NTA, what on earth.

This group emphasized how odd and disrespectful it was for the woman to eat food she knew was meant for a cat

TheBoatmansFerry − NTA. Tell the boyfriend to house train his pet so she's stops eating other people's pets food.

JKristiina − NTA. She knew it was for the cat. Why on earth would anyone eat food that is meant for the cat? ! It just blows my mind.

And in a strangers house at that!

throwawaywork2124 − NTA. She literally stole an animal's food.

But more importantly, why would you walk into someone's house, a complete stranger at that, and start eating random ass food.

What if that food had been prepared with something she was allergic to?

What if that fish/food had gone bad, and you were going to throw it out because you didn't want to get anyone sick? I mean WTF?!?!

These commenters brought in a humorous take

14thLizardQueen − Nta- weird. .. really weird. No. That was Tammy's dinner. I promise you , my cats know when it's dinner time, and hold serious grudges....

[Reddit User] − Courtney was totally awesome in this. Nta for either of you that weirdo is just weird

295Phoenix − NTA Trust me, Tammy would hold a grudge against you if you didn't handle it the way you did.Cats don't like it when their humans don't feed them...

So, was OP’s reaction over the top? Or was this an extreme case of a guest overstepping her boundaries? One thing’s for sure: a stranger eating your pet’s dinner is not something you should just laugh off. Do you think OP handled it well by setting clear boundaries, or did she take it too far? Would you have reacted differently? Let’s hear your thoughts below!
