Woman Lets Old Friends Stay Over, Then Learns Why Boundaries Matter

Sometimes it takes years of friendship to realize someone no longer deserves a place in your life. OP learned that lesson after an old friend crossed several boundaries while staying in her home.

After knowing this couple for decades, OP agreed to let them stay for a few days. She expected a comfortable visit with people her children already knew.

Instead, her friend began making inappropriate jokes, ignored her requests to stop, and later asked to let a complete stranger sleep in her house with her young children there. When OP refused, the situation quickly revealed how little respect they had for her boundaries.

'Letting old friends crash at your house- never again!'

A friend I've known since 1995 or so was in town and asked if he and his wife could stay with me from Sunday thru Thursday morning.

I agreed because I know them, we get along, and my two children like them.

From the beginning, it was very uncomfortable; the friend(Don, to make it easier) kept making s__ual innuendos in front of my kids and his wife(Clara).

Example: saying he thought he'd be sleeping in my bed.

Absolutely not, and I told him more than once I didn't like him speaking like that in front of my children.

Yesterday, clara went out with a friend of theirs(Alex). I work remotely and don just slept all day.

When he finally got up, he asked me if Alex could spend the night at my house too! I have never met this man before and was shocked he would...

I immediately said no. I was thinking of my kids, who are 6m and 3f. Hell no would a stranger be allowed to spend the night!

I guess they expected that I would say yes, because they began pushing, saying they know Alex and he isn't a creep or one of 'those' people,

how he just needs to get away from his extremely crowded home, etc. I still said no.

Don tried saying I know him and he'd never bring anyone dangerous around my kids.

At that point I was ready to ask them to cut their visit short, since they couldn't respect my very solid no.

Shortly after this, Don said they had decided to get a hotel for the rest of their visit. I was relieved and they left last night.

Lesson- even old friends can be jerks about respecting boundaries. I've decided to cut them both off after this and feel happier for it.

Long friendships can create a powerful sense of trust, but time alone does not guarantee that someone will continue respecting your boundaries. One of the hardest realizations in relationships is discovering that a person you have known for decades may no longer fit into the life you have built.

In this story, the OP was not simply dealing with an uncomfortable houseguest. The deeper issue was the repeated disregard for personal limits inside her own home.

She welcomed old friends because of shared history and because her children enjoyed their presence, but that trust was challenged when Don repeatedly made inappropriate comments and then pushed against a clear decision involving her children’s safety.

The request for a stranger to stay overnight became the moment where OP’s protective instincts outweighed the desire to preserve a decades-long friendship.

A different perspective is that this situation highlights how some people confuse familiarity with permission. Don seemed to believe that because he had known OP for years, he automatically deserved more flexibility and trust. However, close relationships do not remove the need for consent.

In fact, the people closest to us are often the ones who can cross boundaries more easily because they assume history will protect them from consequences. OP’s refusal was not about judging Alex personally; it was about maintaining control over who enters her home and around her young children.

Psychologists who study relationships and boundaries often explain that healthy connections require respect for individual limits. Therapist Nedra Glover Tawwab emphasizes that boundaries are not punishments or signs of rejection; they are guidelines that communicate what a person needs to feel safe and respected.

She explains that people who repeatedly ignore boundaries often create resentment because the relationship becomes focused on one person’s demands rather than mutual consideration.

This perspective shows why OP’s reaction was about more than one uncomfortable request. She had already communicated that Don’s comments were inappropriate, yet he continued.

When the overnight guest situation happened, it likely felt like another example of the same pattern: someone else deciding that OP’s comfort level was negotiable. Her decision to end the visit was a way of restoring control over her own space.

The story also offers a reminder that protecting a relationship should never require someone to ignore their own sense of safety. Good friends may make mistakes, but they should be willing to listen when told they have crossed a line. A friendship built over many years still needs respect in the present.

Sometimes the most surprising endings come not from losing a new connection, but from realizing an old one no longer deserves the same access to your life.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These Redditors supported OP’s boundaries and felt the friends were acting entitled

TenaCVols − Good for you! I can't believe the nerve of them asking you to let a complete stranger stay at your house as well.

Griselda68 − What nerve these people had! They are not your friends; they are users.

ilndgrl1970 − This is why I always tell everyone who wants to visit that they need to make arrangements for other accommodations.

I’m disabled and even if I wasn’t, I’m not picking up after others nor am I going to allow them to make me feel uncomfortable nor my daughter and pets.

It’s our house not theirs.

orligirl02 − I'm not sure how to update a post, but Don and I just had a big argument. He denied any manipulation or disrespect,

and I said maybe we have simply outgrown each other as friends. He and Clara were immediately blocked everywhere and I just feel relief.

These commenters suspected the friends had inappropriate intentions and criticized their behavior

Vegetable-Fix-4702 − He wanted swinger s__.

[Reddit User] − Not 'one of those' people, yeah we know what you mean but at the same time they wanted to have swinger s__, in your home, where your...

F__king terrible friends.

useyerbigvoice − Don ‘tested the waters’ with the remark about sleeping in your bed,

then upped the ante by trying to bring a strange man into the house - who knows what could have happened or what they planned.

You were smart to block them, you dodged a bullet I think.

RoyallyOakie − I strategically decorate and furnish my home. There's enough room for someone to crash in a pinch,

but it's not so comfortable as to inspire multiple day stays. I have lots of boutique hotels and BnB's to recommend though!

These Redditors shared experiences with guests overstaying and taking advantage of kindness

ynotfoster − In the past I have let three friends at different times move in when they were in a tough spot.

It was supposed to give them a chance to get back on their feet. None of them were any better off six months later and we had to ask them...

They were all pissed about it too.

Two of the friends apologized once they did get their s__t together.

The third was never a friend, she was a user who didn't want to have to get a job. We never heard from her again after kicking her out.

Snoringdragon − Ugh. We helped out a friend after his girl kicked him out.

Three days later I find he's invited two other deadbeat friends to spend the night. My son had to step over them to get to the bathroom.

They were woken loudly and booted before they could even pee. So was the 'friend'.

Should old friendships receive more patience, or does disrespect inside someone’s home change everything? Have you ever learned a difficult lesson about letting people stay over? Share your thoughts below!
