Woman Loves Her Trans Partner, But Admits She’s Struggling With Feelings She Never Expected

Relationships sometimes ask people to grow in unexpected ways, but growth does not always happen at the same pace as change.

According to this Redditor, they have always considered themselves supportive of transgender people and have never questioned the identities of their trans friends.

However, when their own partner came out and embraced a more feminine presentation, they found themselves struggling emotionally despite wanting nothing more than to be supportive.

They feel guilty for noticing that their physical attraction has shifted, even though their emotional love remains strong. Unsure whether time will help or whether they are facing a deeper incompatibility, they are seeking thoughtful advice rather than reassurance.

'I feel awful because I’m struggling to see my trans partner as a woman, and I don’t know what to do'

I already know this is probably going to make me sound like a horrible person, but I’m genuinely looking for advice, not validation for hurting anyone.

My partner is a trans woman, and I love them so much. I support them, I use the right name and pronouns, and I truly want them to be happy.

I have several trans friends, and I’ve never really struggled with accepting their identities.

But for some reason, with my partner, I just can’t seem to see them as a woman in my mind. I’ve tried. I really have.

I’ve cried over this because I feel so guilty.

I even told them how I was feeling, and they told me it was okay and that they understood, but it doesn’t feel okay to me.

I hate that my brain works this way.

Another thing I’ve been struggling with is that they’ve recently started presenting much more femininely,

like wearing full-face makeup and mini skirts.

It seemed to happen pretty suddenly, and I don’t know why, but I’ve been having a hard time adjusting.

I don’t want them to stop expressing themselves, and I would never want to make them feel like they can’t be who they are.

But internally, I’ve been struggling with it.

The part that makes me feel the worst is that I notice I’m not as physically attracted to them when they’re presenting that way.

I feel incredibly guilty even typing that because they love me, and I love them.

I don’t want my feelings to hurt them, and I don’t want to lose what we have.

Has anyone else been through something similar?

Is this something that gets easier with time, or is this a sign that my attraction has changed?

I really want honest but respectful advice because I care about them deeply, and I don’t want to handle this the wrong way.

Few experiences are more painful than loving someone deeply while discovering that affection, identity, and physical attraction are no longer moving in the same direction.

That conflict can create intense shame because people often assume that genuine love should automatically resolve every uncomfortable feeling. Yet emotions rarely obey moral intentions so neatly.

In this situation, the original poster is not simply refusing to recognize her partner’s womanhood. She appears to be caught between three different realities: her intellectual acceptance of her partner’s identity, her emotional image of the person she originally fell for, and her changing physical response to a more feminine presentation.

Her distress suggests that she does not want to control or humiliate her partner. Instead, she fears that an involuntary reaction makes her disloyal. Meanwhile, her partner may be experiencing femininity as liberation, making this period joyful for one person and disorienting for the other.

While some readers may interpret the struggle as hidden prejudice, another possibility is that romantic attachment builds a surprisingly stable internal picture of a partner.

When appearance, social identity, or relationship dynamics shift quickly, the mind may need time to update that picture. Friends are usually accepted as they present themselves because their identity does not reshape one’s own romantic orientation or intimate expectations.

A partner’s transition can feel different because it affects desire, public perception, sexuality, and the future both people imagined. That does not excuse disrespect, but it explains why acceptance and attraction are not identical psychological processes.

Behavioral health therapist Sarah Eley has observed that partners of transgender people may face changes involving attraction, sexual intimacy, disclosure, isolation, and how the couple is perceived by others. Her insight suggests that these reactions are not unusual side effects of relational transition, even among supportive partners.

A separate Verywell Mind guide recommends allowing space to process complicated emotions privately, learning without making the transgender partner carry the entire emotional burden, and seeking an affirming therapist or partner-support group when needed.

The American Psychological Association also distinguishes gender identity from sexual orientation, which includes patterns of emotional, romantic, and sexual attraction.

Applied here, the poster does not need to punish herself into feeling attraction. Guilt may encourage kindness, but it cannot manufacture desire.

She can respect her partner completely while honestly examining whether the discomfort comes from unfamiliarity, fear of change, rigid expectations of femininity, or a genuine incompatibility in orientation. Those possibilities require patience and self-scrutiny, not immediate condemnation.

A practical next step would be a defined period of reflection with a transgender-affirming individual therapist, rather than repeatedly confessing every painful reaction to her partner. After that period, she may find that attraction returns as the new presentation becomes familiar or that romantic compatibility has changed.

Either answer can be faced compassionately. Staying solely from guilt may eventually hurt both people more than an honest, respectful ending. What matters most is whether love can evolve without requiring either partner to deny an essential truth.

Check out how the community responded:

These commenters agreed attraction cannot be forced and losing it does not make OP anti-trans

Away-Caterpillar-176 − The main difference between platonic and romantic love is attraction, and attraction is natural and can't be forced.

Two things can be true -- you can really, really love this person, and you can not be attracted to them.

You have loved and accepted them through this transition.

You're not a bad person because you can't force the unforeseeable when it comes to attraction.

Charming-Passage2895 − Do not blame yourself you are into dudes

And when you partner start turning into a woman (basically the thing that you are not into) you start loosing interest Simple as that

hummingfalcon − You losing attraction isn’t anti trans. Just the way it goes sometimes.

Ekis12345 − S__ual preferences are not a choice. If you don't feel attracted to women, being in love with a woman will not work out, sadly.

These Redditors said the relationship should end if physical compatibility no longer exists

369farmer − well what would you do if you dont feel physically attracted to someone straight/not trans?

You'd break up. dont gotta make it a big deal just cuz they're trans.

mielkiss_ − if your partner dressing more femme is furthering your conflicted feelings, then you need to break up.

you can’t force yourself to feel physically attracted to someone no matter how hard you try.

you’ll only end up hurting that person in the long run. it’s not your fault you feel this way,

but you really should do the right thing and end the relationship.

i experienced a similar situation a few years ago and dragged it out longer than i should have,

trying to force myself to feel attracted to that person because i still loved and didn’t want to hurt them,

but in the end separating was inevitable. i hope you can at least try to stay friends. wishing you the best

Dark_Romantasy − It sounds like your sexuality no longer matches up with their gender. And that's okay.

This does happen with Trans relationships. It's sad, it's hard, and it can be incredibly heartbreaking.

But it's better to do the soul searching, be honest with yourself and her,

and end the relationship if you no longer line up. And this doesn't need to be a brutal break up.

You can stay wonderful friends! Just be gentle with each other.

This group encouraged an honest, gentle conversation while remaining supportive and respectful

CowboysFTWs − Liking men isn't anti-trans. That is attraction. I think you owe your partner a talk.

You can still be a great friend and ally, if you're not with her romantically.

idreamofmnemosyne − It’s amazing your partner has found their truth and is making moves towards living life as their happiest self.

However, you are also 110% allowed to have preferences on the type of person you’re physically attracted to.

You like what you like, you don’t have to convince yourself you’re s__ually attracted to someone who’s changed gender.

You need to be honest with your partner about how you’re feeling and maybe work to renegotiate the terms of your relationship, or dissolve it.

You can and should find ways to be supportive, because you very obviously love this person, while also knowing it’s ok to withdraw your s__ual attraction.

Character_Hand4705 − Based on your post history,

this is the same person who s__ually assaulted you or you've been with her for less than 9 months. Break up

Do you think romantic attraction can adapt over time during a partner’s transition, or is it something that cannot be forced? How should couples navigate situations where love remains but attraction changes? Share your thoughts below!
