Support in a relationship can be tricky, especially when one partner’s dreams clash with the financial reality of the situation. This woman has been covering the bills after her fiancé quit his job to pursue a career as a Twitch streamer. While she has been financially supporting them both, she’s been frustrated by his lack of progress.

When he asked her to buy him a new gaming laptop for his birthday, she declined, especially after he belittled her business.

Now, he’s furious, claiming she’s ruining his career, but she feels hurt by his dismissive comments about her work. Is she justified in refusing the request, or was she too harsh?

'AITA for refusing my to buy my fiancé gaming laptop for a few grand after he told me to find a real job?'

My fiancé (m37) and I (f30) have started living together 6 months ago. I own a house and he moved in with me.

I run online business from home which allows me to live rather comfortably.

A month after moving in, he quit his job saying how much he hated it and that he’s going to try and do twitch streaming for a living.

I'm all for following your passion so I was supportive although surprised at the turn of events.

I am in financial position to support us both but it felt off.

Anyway, nothing happened with his twitch channel.

Sure, he’s gaming all day but hasn’t bothered to even try and create an account, he just games for pleasure. It’s been 7 months.

I’ve had conversations with him suggesting he finds work but he keeps telling me that I’m unsupportive and he needs time.

He wanted us to buy a bigger house together but I said that I’m fine with my current one and that since he doesn’t have a job,

I don’t want to get mortgage and be left with paying everything and he told me

that if I found a real job maybe I wouldn’t have financial problems. We had a massive argument that night.

Now, he’s been hinting at needing new gaming laptop which costs a few grand and I’ve been ignoring it,

so he asked outright for me to buy it for his birthday.

I told him no that my fake job doesn’t cover new laptops and he got really pissed at me, telling me I’m selfish and am ruining his career.

Granted, I can afford it to buy it but he really hurt me saying my business is not a real job despite me working my a** off.

AITA for not buying him new laptop?

Relationships should be based on mutual respect and equitable contributions. The OP’s decision to refuse to buy the gaming laptop is about standing up for herself and the hard work she’s put into her business.

Many people can relate to the feeling of being taken for granted, especially when one partner isn’t contributing financially or emotionally but expects the other to cover the gap.

The OP’s fiancé’s behavior, expecting her to finance his hobby without contributing, creates an imbalance that’s not only unfair but emotionally draining.

Looking at the psychology behind this, the fiancé’s expectation that the OP should buy him an expensive laptop after he quit his job to pursue an unproductive hobby reflects a sense of entitlement.

According to psychological research, entitlement in relationships occurs when one partner expects rewards or privileges without putting in equal effort.

Dr. Michelle M. D. explains, “When someone feels entitled, they expect benefits without reciprocal contributions, leading to feelings of frustration and resentment in the other person.”

The OP’s fiancé’s lack of contribution, both financially and emotionally, while continuing to indulge in his gaming hobby without taking any concrete steps to pursue a career shows a deep imbalance in their relationship.

Equity theory in psychology suggests that people feel distressed when their contributions and rewards in a relationship are not equal.

In this case, the OP is clearly doing more than her fair share by maintaining a successful business while also supporting her fiancé, yet he continues to demand more without giving back. This imbalance is bound to cause friction and strain.

The OP’s decision to refuse the laptop is not about being selfish; it’s about asserting her boundaries and recognizing that fairness is essential in a partnership.

The fiancé’s response, accusing her of being unsupportive and selfish, reflects a lack of self-awareness about the emotional labor and financial responsibility that the OP is shouldering.

By expecting a new gaming laptop without contributing to the relationship’s financial well-being, he’s showing a disregard for the effort and sacrifices the OP is making.

In conclusion, the OP is right to set boundaries and protect herself from feeling emotionally drained and taken for granted. Relationships thrive on mutual respect, contribution, and communication.

The OP’s refusal to buy the laptop serves as a clear message that she needs to be treated as an equal partner, not a financial supporter for his hobbies.

It’s important in relationships for both partners to contribute in ways that are fair and balanced and to recognize the hard work and sacrifices made by the other.

The OP’s stance is a necessary reminder that in healthy relationships, equity matters, and one partner’s needs should not outweigh the other’s contributions.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

This group criticizes the boyfriend for mooching off OP, questioning what he contributes to the relationship

Bordsteinschwalben − You sound intelligent, is the D that good for all that BS? NTA

mangarooboo − I’m selfish and am ruining his career. Lmao. What career? NTA. I'm a straight woman but can I be your new boyfriend?

You sound like you're carrying all the weight here and instead of being happy for you

(or even feeling lucky and grateful for being able to just f__k around for seven MONTHS

and have zero consequences) this dude has become spoiled.

Does he do chores around the house at least? Show SOME form of appreciation?

FloppyEaredDog − Info: What do you see in this guy? What does he bring to the relationship?

Rstar2247 − NTA This boyfriend moved in with you, doesn't have a job

and has the audacity to criticize your home and your job and is asking you to buy him costly things? Why are you with him again?

These users encourage OP to dump the boyfriend immediately, calling him selfish, entitled, and manipulative for trying to live off her while pursuing unrealistic dreams

Holmes221bBSt − NTA. Wow. So he saw you make money with your own business & decided you can be his sugar momma

while he follows his dream of being a professional gamer. Yeah ya know what, no.

You have a real job, he has NO job & now he’s going through some early mid life crisis trying to be some edgy famous gamer.

Sorry but he sounds like he’s 19. He’ll be 40 soon. HE needs a real job, not you

IronwoodWitch − NTA. dump him. Hes using you.

Chi3f_Leo − NTA - After 7 months of this you really shouldn't have to ask

SagaciousSagi − From the title alone, NTA for the laptop without reading the rest. Edit: Dump him ASAP.

You're a bank while he plays games all day. Don't entertain this any further.

This group highlights the ridiculousness of the boyfriend’s age and career goals, suggesting he’s acting like a child and exploiting OP’s hard work

BeringC − NTA- Take a look at the post people, this guy is 37! 37, and his big career goal is to be a twitch streamer.

Not only should you not buy him a laptop you need to kick him to the curb, fast!

HistoricalInaccurate − NTA - Dude is using you.

Sea-Mud5386 − NTA Generally, kept men don't deliberately p__s off their sugar mommas,

but you've managed to land yourself a guy who feels entitled to your house, your money and dictating how you earn your living.

He can go kick rocks somewhere he pays rent.

These Redditors strongly advise OP to end the relationship

Allimack − NTA This has to be fake, right? Adults have to support themselves financially,

OR bring something to the table (like childcare or caregiving or homemaking) that balances them staying at home and not working.

You haven't said that he devotes time and energy to shopping, meal planning, vacuuming and dusting,

doing the laundry and making your home a comfortable and peaceful place.

If he is just a sitting like a lump in front of the computer while you feed him and attend to his needs like you are his mom and he...

then that is a big red flag that he is never going to be the partner you deserve.

Give him the legal notice you need to give him to leave, 30 days or 60 days.

Tell him this is "not working" for you anymore. You were originally attracted to a functional adult, not a needy child.

carton_of_cats − YOU’RE the one with a fake job? Last I checked you’re the sole income-earner in this relationship. NTA, I’d dump him.

madelinegumbo − NTA Why on earth are you letting this guy mooch off you like this?

adj8484 − NTA. Throw the whole man away right now.

Was OP wrong for refusing to buy her fiancé a $3,000 laptop after he disrespected her job and made no effort to contribute financially? The overwhelming consensus from the internet is a resounding no, OP was not in the wrong.

Her fiancé’s entitled behavior and failure to appreciate her efforts are serious relationship red flags. Should OP continue to support him in his endeavors, or is it time to reevaluate the relationship altogether? Share your thoughts below!
