Woman Refuses to Cook for Her Unemployed Boyfriend—Then He Claims She’s “Letting Him Starve”

After working a late shift, buying him a car, and covering most of the household expenses, she expected one simple thing from her 26-year-old boyfriend: feed himself. Instead, he accused her of leaving him to starve.

After a long shift that ended close to midnight, a 21-year-old woman expected nothing more than to relax, eat her leftovers, and unwind with her boyfriend. Instead, what started as a simple conversation about dinner turned into an argument that left her questioning whether she had been too harsh.

She shared her story online after her boyfriend insisted she was “letting him starve” because she refused to cook for him or pay for takeout.

'AITAH for letting my partner “starve”?'

I (F21) came home from work at about 11:37pm tonight and immediately stripped after getting through the door since me and my partner(M26) have been camping out in the living...

Came in with him in the game (no biggie tonight.) He’s typically on the game at this hr because that’s when his friends are on.

I laid down next to him on my phone and about 10 minutes later asked him if he wanted to watch another episode of “Good bye Earth” and he said...

Somewhere in between I asked if he could heat up my Chinese food from last night since I have a headache and I’m really tired. He said alright and I...

He started pacing around the house apparently trying to figure out what to eat and I went around listing around things that could be made like instant noodles or some...

I even told him we could use some tin mackerel cut some onions and peppers together with green seafood mix and put that all together with some canned diced tomatoes...

When he came back out into the living room he asked if it’s okay if he could go and get some noodles from like a gas station to eat. We...

Who gonna stop you.” And he started chuckling with me but with almost a pleading look. (Apparently he didn’t “think about eating” until I got home which is most often...

I think it’s unnecessary when you can make something to eat.

I tell him every time stop waiting till I get home for you to start trying to get me to make something to eat or for you to eat something...

He said I was being stingy and I told him if it weren’t for me being stingy we wouldn’t be in the place we’re in and all those car repairs...

(I just took out a loan to get him a used car like 2 months ago). He then went and sat in the couch and sigh, talking about how hungry...

He asked me to cook for him and I told him I don’t feel like cooking tonight I told him I could even wash the pots and cook the rice...

He asks me if I’m basically going to let him starve because I won’t cook for him and I said no you’re going to starve yourself because you don’t want...

He said that he didn’t want to cook and he told me that he wasn’t and I’m trying to force it and to basically stop trying.

So he went on his phone and was doing his own thing and I sighed bc it’s clear he’s not going to cook and I’m not trying to back down

and make him use my credit card for bs just bc he don’t wanna cook when he’s gone down my back about not cooking or me letting myself starve and...

Or him having to spend money bc I won’t cook. Yet I can count on my hand how many times he’s cooked this year which he only did because I...

I’m really irritated and I’m started to feel bad bc he’s hurt bc Its annoying that he does this. I tell him how much I’m tired of being the only...

Sorry, for my long dragged out explanation I’m not good at this and I’m sure my punctuation is terrible… 😞

Update: We had a really deep conversation about that night… He went on to apologize and understand how ridiculous his response was in addition to how he really should’ve handled...

He did talk about being stressed and using the game as an escape. He said he was able to find a position but HM is handling the documentation, he should...

He did also express that he didn’t feel like cooking because the kitchen was a bit of a reck.

A while back he told me he would do the dishes but he’s just been running a cycle on the same set of dishes ( wok and Rice cooker pot,...

There’s a realization that he misinterpreted what me asking him to do the dishes meant. (Let’s not even talk about this.)

Came to a compromise that I run the dishes before I go to work and take some meat out.

If I plan to cook he has to do the prep and make rice, if not, I’ll let him know in advance to make something to eat.

I told him I will need him to make sure to eat something for lunch because I don’t need him nagging me, which he agreed to.

He got some can goods today for something quick for him. We’re working on making a grocery list that includes simple stuff for him to make for himself. So that’s...

A Late Night After Work

The woman explained that she arrived home around 11:37 p.m., exhausted and dealing with a headache. She and her 26-year-old boyfriend had been sleeping in the living room lately because of the air conditioning, and when she walked in, he was playing online games with his friends.

That wasn’t unusual.

“He’s typically on the game at this hour because that’s when his friends are on,” she explained.

She lay down beside him and, after about ten minutes, suggested they watch another episode of the series they had been following together. He happily agreed and logged off his game.

Before they settled in, she asked if he could warm up her leftover Chinese food since she wasn’t feeling well.

He agreed.

The Dinner Dilemma

Instead of heating up her meal right away, however, he wandered around the house trying to figure out what he wanted to eat.

Trying to help, she suggested several easy options.

There were instant noodles.

Oatmeal.

Frozen meals that could be heated quickly.

She even described a more complete meal using canned mackerel, onions, peppers, frozen seafood mix, diced tomatoes, and rice.

He rejected every suggestion.

Eventually he changed clothes and announced that he wanted to drive to a nearby gas station to buy noodles instead.

“You’re a Grown Man”

When he asked if it was okay to go, she laughed.

“Why are you asking me? You’re a grown man with two legs.”

According to her, they were both joking at first.

But then she realized he seemed to expect her to pay for the trip.

She explained that money was tight and she wasn’t willing to use her credit card on snacks and convenience-store food when the house was already stocked with groceries.

She reminded him they had dozens of eggs in the refrigerator, rice, frozen meat, and plenty of ingredients available.

More importantly, she said this wasn’t the first time.

He frequently waited until she got home from work before thinking about dinner, hoping she would cook for him instead.

Burned Out

The woman admitted she has grown increasingly frustrated being the household’s default cook.

She said she has repeatedly told him she’s exhausted from always being responsible for meals.

She even offered a compromise that night.

If he cooked the meat, she would wash the pots and prepare the rice.

He still refused.

Instead, he sat on the couch complaining about how hungry he was.

Meanwhile, her own leftovers sat waiting.

She had to keep reheating them because he delayed so long that the plastic takeout container actually warped from repeated trips through the microwave.

“You’re Letting Me Starve”

Eventually, he directly asked her to cook for him.

She refused.

She reminded him that she wasn’t feeling well and simply didn’t have the energy.

That’s when he accused her of letting him starve.

She pushed back.

“No,” she essentially replied. “You’re choosing to starve yourself.”

He wasn’t unable to eat.

He simply didn’t want to prepare food himself.

He insisted she was trying to force him to cook when he didn’t want to.

She finally gave up, ate her own meal, and watched television while he continued pouting on the couch.

Later that night, he retreated to the bedroom complaining that he now had a headache and that the light hurt his eyes.

Although irritated, she admitted she also felt guilty.

Financial Pressure

In an update, she added important context.

Her boyfriend had recently been unemployed for about a month while waiting to start a new position with Amazon.

Before losing his job, he handled most of the major household bills while she paid for groceries, miscellaneous home expenses, car repairs, internet service, and helped cover his car insurance.

She also revealed that just two months earlier she had taken out a loan to help him buy a used car.

Her own paychecks ranged from roughly $400 to $800 every two weeks, while he had previously earned between $900 and $1,100.

Despite understanding that unemployment had added stress to his life, she still couldn’t understand why he refused to make himself something as simple as eggs or ramen.

A Productive Conversation

Fortunately, the story didn’t end with resentment.

The couple later sat down and had a serious conversation about what happened.

Her boyfriend apologized.

He admitted his reaction had been unreasonable and acknowledged that he should have handled dinner himself.

He also confessed that the stress of unemployment had caused him to retreat into video games as an escape.

He shared that he had secured a new position and expected to begin work within the following week.

After talking things through, he cleaned up the house and made dinner.

The discussion also uncovered another issue.

He admitted he disliked cooking because the kitchen often felt cluttered.

Previously, he believed “doing the dishes” only meant washing the cookware they were actively using, leaving the rest untouched.

Once they realized they had completely different interpretations of household responsibilities, they agreed on a new system.

She would start the dishwasher before leaving for work and thaw meat ahead of time.

If she planned to cook later, he would handle meal prep and make the rice.

If she wasn’t cooking, she would let him know ahead of time so he could prepare his own dinner.

He also agreed to stop skipping lunch so he wouldn’t end the day expecting her to solve his hunger after work.

Together they began creating a grocery list filled with quick, easy meals he could make on his own.

Let's dive into the reactions from Reddit:

Many commenters felt the boyfriend’s behavior reflected weaponized incompetence rather than genuine helplessness.

Hopeful_Protection58 − NTA but why are you with this manchild. .?! Just why?

Aggravating-Cat5357 − The fact that he's 26 and can't even boil a pot of water for ramen noodles is beyond pathetic. Or that he can't remember to eat until you're...

Hightechzombie − Why are you with this helpless whiny baby? He's 26, he has no intention of getting better and his main strategy of getting fed is crying to his...

Dull_Anybody_1825 − Hey I get it! I also live with someone who doesnt work, always demands I feed him because he claims he cant do it himself, needs me to...

Hes perfectly healthy, but i once had to go into some heavy debt for a medical issue to help him when he got sick. Hasn't paid me back once either....

Your life will improve. NTA for not making him food but damn are you one to yourself.

Several pointed out that a healthy 26-year-old should be fully capable of preparing basic meals, especially when the refrigerator was full of food.

gojira86 − NTA. You're not letting him starve, he's just being a manchild. Don't become his mom.

No_Salad_8766 − Hes 26 and having you buy him a car and cook for him? Please leave him. Hes a man baby who just wants someone to take care of...

Stand your ground, and dont make him any more food. NTA, but you will be if you stay with him. Side note, if he was home all day while you...

FewRecognition1788 − So, wait, he's not working? Why does he need money from you to go buy food? Why are you buying him a car? Please don't tell me you're...

YTA to yourself if you keep putting up with this, but you are definitely NTA for expecting a 26 year old man to feed himself rather than blame you because...

MadameFlora − You're the bangmaid who bought him a car and pays the bills. The curb is a good place for him.

Others noted the imbalance in the relationship, observing that she was working, helping finance his vehicle, paying numerous household expenses, and still being expected to function as his personal cook.

Material-Basis2706 − So he doesn’t work, doesn’t pay for anything, doesn’t cook or feed himself… plays games with his friends while waiting for you to make him or buy him...

Sad-Cow-5580 − Girl reread your post and then stand up and leave this man? He wants you to take care of him like you’re his mother.

If he doesn’t take care of you in these ways like he wants you to and you have to beg him to do something as simple as cook himself a...

Relationships often reveal themselves through ordinary moments rather than dramatic crises.

In this case, dinner became about far more than food.

It exposed questions about responsibility, emotional labor, financial pressure, communication, and the expectations partners place on one another.

Thankfully, instead of allowing one exhausting night to become a permanent source of conflict, both partners chose to talk honestly, acknowledge mistakes, and build a plan that worked better for both of them.

Whether that new balance lasts remains to be seen—but for now, at least, neither of them is going to bed hungry.
