Woman Refuses to Reveal Her Kids’ Savings Amount, Then Her Boyfriend Turns It Into a Trust Issue

in Social Issues

Money can be one of the hardest topics in a relationship, especially when it involves children, past relationships, and personal boundaries.

While couples often share financial details, not every account automatically becomes a joint concern.

The original poster (OP) has been dating her boyfriend for nearly two years and they currently live together in a home she purchased before their relationship.

Before meeting him, OP created a savings account for her children’s future and has continued contributing to it over the years.

When her boyfriend repeatedly asked how much was saved, OP refused to give him the exact amount because she considers it money set aside for her children, not herself.

What started as a simple question quickly became an argument about trust and privacy.

Read on to see why OP is questioning whether she handled it the right way.

Mother questions her boyfriend’s repeated interest in her children’s savings account

not the actual photo

'AITA for not telling my boyfriend my savings that are not mine?'

I (34f), he (32m) asked me a question about my savings that are not even mine.

Context: we’ve been dating for less than two years and we live together in

my home that I purchased well before we began our relationship. I have

two children, trophies from a marriage, that I’m divorced from.

I started a savings account when I was pregnant. I did this because I wanted

a jump start for my children’s future. That when they turned 25, they will

do what they will with it. Therefore, it is not my money. I do not spend the

money on anything, I simply put money into it every time I get paid.. I have

a 401k but that’s it.

My boyfriend asked me how much I have in my children’s savings, I told him

I do not feel that it is any of his concerns because the account isn’t mine.

He got upset and asked me “do you not trust me?” I responded “it has

nothing to do with trust. It’s not anyone else’s business about it, it’s not my account.”

He then says “well you know how much is in the account, but I can’t?” I

started to see red, because WHAT?! I responded “of course, I know how

much is in it because I’m the one who puts money into the account and I

balance the book and keep track of everything, what kind of question is that?!!”

He said “that’s not fair! How could you know and not me?” I responded “ITS

NOT YOUR ACCOUNT, I am the mother of these children and I started this a

long time ago, and why do you care so much about money that has nothing

to do with you?”

He responded “because we are in a relationship and you should trust me. I

would tell you how much I have if you asked.”

I responded “I would never ask a question that I have no business in, and I

don’t ask questions I do not want the answers to. That’s ridiculous!”

Now he’s spiraling and I am not sitting well with this conversation. It wasn’t

the first time he’s asked. I gave him a “ballpark” the first time, this was a

year ago. Now he’s asking again and I just find it disrespectful.. Update: I

have read every single comment and I tremendously appreciate y’all’s suggestions.

I am not sure why most feel that “if you don’t trust him, why date him?” I’m

dating him because I do love him and we do have a lot of greatness within

our relationship. I do trust him. My children absolutely adore him. I believe

if there’s some things that are not relevant and give value to the

relationship, why talk about it?. He does pay rent. And does contribute to

spending when we are out.. We went to bed without talking further about it.

I understand y’all tell me, I should dump him. My heart is not ready. I feel

that if we can respect each other enough to respect the decision we have

made, about choices that do not involve one another, this relationship can

work.. Here’s to hope.

Some boundaries feel personal because they are connected to the things we value most.

For many parents, protecting their children’s future is not simply a financial decision; it is an expression of responsibility, love, and long-term commitment.

When someone questions a boundary around that responsibility, it can feel less like a normal conversation about money and more like a challenge to something deeply meaningful.

In this situation, the OP was not refusing to share information because she wanted to hide something from her partner.

She viewed the savings account differently because, in her mind, the money already belonged emotionally and practically to her children.

She created it before the relationship existed, manages it separately, and does not use it for herself.

Her reaction came from feeling that her boyfriend was asking for access to information that did not affect their shared household.

Meanwhile, her boyfriend appeared to interpret the refusal as a sign of distrust, turning a question about finances into a question about emotional closeness.

A different perspective is that both people may have been speaking different emotional languages.

The OP was thinking in terms of ownership and responsibility: “This money is for my children, so it is private.”

Her boyfriend may have been thinking in terms of partnership: “If we are building a life together, why is there information I cannot know?”

Neither perspective is automatically unreasonable, but problems arise when one person’s desire for reassurance becomes another person’s feeling of pressure.

This explains why the conversation became heated so quickly. The amount in the account was not the true issue.

For OP, the issue was protecting a boundary around her children’s future.

For her boyfriend, the issue may have been whether he had a place of trust and transparency in her life.

Understanding that difference can prevent both people from assuming the worst intentions.

At the same time, healthy relationships require respect for individual boundaries.

Being in a committed relationship does not automatically mean every personal detail must become shared information, especially when it involves assets created before the relationship and intended for someone else.

However, it is also important for couples to discuss expectations around finances before moving toward deeper commitments.

The question is not only whether OP should reveal the amount, but whether both partners can accept that love and trust do not always mean unlimited access.

A strong relationship allows two people to build a shared future while still respecting the responsibilities and commitments they carried before they met.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters believed OP should be cautious

LilaMane − Something shady is up. Make sure not to leave any account

information laying around and lock down your kids' social security

numbers. P. S. I love that you call them trophies from previous marriage 🏆

🏆 💜. My brother married a woman with 2 kids and he calls them his

trophy kids.

baobab77 − NTA sounds like you got a hobosexual who is too comfortable.

better hide all that info in a safe and get him out your house. also check

and lock your credit. what other information has he been privy to, while

living in your house?

Weeitsabear1 − GIRLFRIEND! ! REDS FLAGS EVERYWHERE! !!! The reasons I

say that-I work in cyber security, and I've also seen this happen to two of

my friends by their 'boyfriends'. One friend had it all stolen by that

boyfriend, the other friends BF tried and got really close to cleaning out the account.

He's looking over what you've got that he may be able to get his hands on.

I'm sorry to sound so blunt but I'm really worried for you. It's your/your

children's money, as you said, he has nothing to do with it, has no need or

right to know anything about it.

If he follows the same gameplan as the ones who stole/tried to steal from

my friends (and how some people use social engineering to breech data in

non romantic relationships), he's getting ready to make his break (has he

been feeling more distant lately, kind of restless, not paying attention to

things, short tempered? Those are some of the signs.

) Also, make sure he can't get his name on the mortgage and for sure wait

to get married if that's on your mind (or if you do, get a ironclad prenup

and don't put his name on the mortgage for several years if you can stall).

Sorry to be this way, I guess I've gotten a little paranoid after seeing it

happen not just once but twice to two different friends, as well as what I've

seen in my job. Just can't be too sure in these days. Good luck.

These commenters recommended protecting financial information

CreativeinCosi − Seems suspicious to me, either sinister or controlling. I'd

tell him that you made the account inaccessible until the kids are adults,

even to you. Tell him you didn't want to have a crisis and be tempted to

take their money. Tell him that when they are adults, they can choose to

share the balance of their account with him.

Tiberius_Imperator − Why does he need to know? Very sus. Is he looking for

ways to trick you into bailing him out of debt or something? If you don't

already, get a safe that isn't easily carried away to put you financial

documents in, and lock down your and your kids' credit (and pull a credit

report on you and your kids just to be sure).

There's got to be something he's hiding from you.

60andstillpoir − Protect yourself and your accounts, personal information

and your kids too. He could go behind your back open accounts with the

kids socials ect. Be cautious please

These commenters viewed the boyfriend as a potential freeloader

Awkward-Tourist979 − Kick him out of your house.  This is very sketchy.

JEWCEY − If he's spiraling because you won't share details about money

that's none of his business, I hope you're done with him. You realize he's

not good, right? Don't let him figuring out a way to steal your kids' money

be the thing. This is your wake up call. Run, girl.

These commenters emphasized that the money belongs to OP’s children

MilitaryBrat2020 − NTA. You are a great mom, know that. You are

respecting your children’s future decisions. Ask him why he wants to know?

It sounds like he might have something planned for that money. He’s

‘boyfriend’ not husband, not father of your children, he has not yet earned

that amount of trust it seems. I would be cautious with your money and

savings from now on.

PopularSchool8975 − He wants to know YOUR CHILDREN’S financial

status… children that are not his, nor has he contributed towards. That’s

beyond gross. NTA. Stand your ground because you’re right, it’s none of his business.

A conversation about money quickly turned into a conversation about boundaries, trust, and respect.

The OP’s children’s savings account was created long before this relationship and was meant solely for their future, not as shared relationship finances.

While some may understand why her boyfriend wanted transparency, others feel he crossed a line by pushing for access to something that was never his responsibility.

The real question is whether this was about trust or about entitlement.
