Woman Refuses to Take Boyfriend’s Speeding Points, So He Tells Her to Deal With the Consequences

Sometimes, a relationship disagreement is really about whether one person is willing to accept responsibility for their own choices. That becomes especially important when the consequences could affect the other person’s independence, finances, or future plans.

The OP is a 28-year-old learner driver in Ireland who recently bought her first car. Her partner, who has been driving for years, borrowed it and was caught speeding at 102 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

Because the car is registered to the OP, the speeding notice arrived in her name. Her partner agreed to pay the fine, but there was another consequence she had not initially realized.

He already had six penalty points, while she had none, and taking the new points herself could put her license and ability to get to college at risk. Now her partner expects her to accept responsibility for something he did. Scroll down to see why this argument has become so heated.

Her partner expects her to take the penalty points for his speeding, despite already having six points himself, and lashes out when she refuses

'AITAH for not taking my partners license points?'

Me (28F) and my partner (29M) are currently arguing.

I’m not sure how penalty points work in other countries but here in Ireland

if you receive 12 points on your full license you lose it, and if you receive 7 on a learners you lose it.

My partner is a full license driver and currently has 6 points , I have recently purchased a car and I am a learner with no points.

My partner was driving my car and was caught on a speeding camera doing 102 km/h in a 80 zone.

I received the letter in the mail addressed to me as it was my car but I was not driving so I told my partner

and he said he would pay the fine and this was ok with me I was not aware I would get points and he never told me. (3 points for...

When I found out I told him he would need to take the responsibility and I would have to nominate him to receive the points.

He’s been driving years I have only had my car 4 months I am a very careful driver while he is not and if I take his points I’ve only...

I start college in September and if I ever did anything wrong id lose my license and this is my way to college.

His 6 points are from him speeding and being on his phone. He thinks I should take the points because if he does he’ll only have 3 left.

He’s very angry at me and told me to go F myself over it.

Just for context we have been together 8 years and have a child together (5) but do not live together and he drives to see us more

then we do to him we live 30 minutes away from eachother he feels I should take the points because of this.

Edit : thank you everyone who replied and was really nice about it I appreciate all the advice.

I will be sending off the letter with him nominated today so I’m not taking the points.

I have been reflecting on this a lot and I’m now very angry about it, we are not talking and I don’t want to talk to him. Anyway yeh thanks...

Few things reveal the health of a relationship more clearly than what happens when one person’s mistake creates consequences for both people. Love and shared history can create an instinct to protect a partner, but protecting someone does not always mean absorbing the consequences of choices they made themselves.

The OP’s situation is particularly serious because the proposed sacrifice isn’t minor. Her partner was driving her car when he was caught speeding at 102 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. He already has six penalty points, while she has none and is a relatively new learner driver. Accepting his three points would leave her with only four points before losing her licence at seven.

With college beginning soon and her licence needed for transportation, she would be taking on considerably greater practical risk than he would. More importantly, he apparently knew that the points were attached to the offence yet initially only told her he would pay the fine.

A different psychological perspective is that couples sometimes confuse shared life with shared consequences. Because the OP and her partner have been together for eight years and have a child, he may genuinely believe that sacrifices should automatically be mutual.

Yet partnership does not mean one person becomes responsible for protecting another adult from predictable consequences. His argument that he drives to see them more often may explain why he feels the arrangement is unfair, but it doesn’t change who was behind the wheel.

Psychologist Harriet Lerner, Ph.D., has written extensively about boundaries and responsibility in close relationships. In Psychology Today, she explains that healthy boundaries allow people to distinguish their own responsibilities from those belonging to others. Taking responsibility for another person’s choices can create resentment rather than genuine closeness.

The Gottman Institute similarly emphasizes that contempt and hostile communication can damage relationships, particularly when disagreements become personal attacks rather than collaborative problem-solving.

That insight makes his “go F yourself” response particularly concerning. He was entitled to be frightened about accumulating points. He was entitled to ask whether she would help him. He was not entitled to demand that she accept a substantial risk to her own licence, especially after he had accumulated his existing points through his own speeding and phone use.

There is also an important practical lesson here. If the OP accepts his points, she would effectively be taking responsibility for an offence she did not commit.

Even if she never receives another penalty, the consequences would remain attached to her licence. Her partner, meanwhile, would retain a stronger licence position despite being the person who actually committed the offence. That arrangement could encourage precisely the behavior that created the problem.

The fact that he drives to visit his family more frequently doesn’t create an obligation for her to protect his licence. If anything, someone who drives regularly should have an even stronger incentive to protect his own record by changing his driving habits.

The OP therefore isn’t being selfish by nominating the actual driver. She is refusing to convert his speeding offence into a risk attached to her own future. Her college plans, transportation needs, and driving record are legitimate interests, not bargaining chips in an eight-year relationship.

A healthy partnership can involve enormous sacrifices, but those sacrifices should be voluntary. **Supporting someone through the consequences of their mistake is very different from taking the consequences away from them.** In this case, the fairest outcome is also the simplest one: the person who was driving accepts the points, pays the fine, and changes the behavior that caused them.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters agreed that he caused the problem and must accept responsibility instead of blaming OP

silver_clooud − Your partner is completely in the wrong and his behavior is unacceptable

pinkwineenthusiast − NTA and you don’t face legal consequences for other people ever.

All it does is she he’s free to do it again. 3 points left isn’t a problem if he stops driving like an a__hole!

khampang − NTA. He needs to own up to it. He did it take the responsibility. What an AH.

If it’s like the US those points affect your insurance prices too. You know, he COULD just start driving the speed limit. That’s how you don’t get points.

These Redditors condemned his hostility, insults, and willingness to throw OP under the bus

Clear_Marionberry306 − He told you to go f__k yourself? ! Girl. NTA. It's obvious who the a__hole is.

Narwen189 − NTA but your partner sure is. It's disturbing how willing he is to throw you under the bus for his own mistakes.

These commenters strongly encouraged OP to leave the relationship because of his irresponsible and abusive behavior.

obfc − Girl dump him. He is an ultimate a__hole.

tanglelover − NTA. Irish person here, *run*.

pottersquash − NTA. Cause I'm betting its illegal to do this. Now, the reality of your situation is another story.

This commenter expressed concern that the child has to grow up with a father who behaves this way

thatphotogurl − I’m sorry your child has this guy for a Father.

Was his request an understandable act of panic over losing driving privileges, or did asking her to carry his consequences reveal something much harder to ignore?
