Woman Saves Two Slices Of Her Own Pie, And Coworker Calls It Unfair To His Kids

Office treats are usually meant to be shared with coworkers, not quietly packed up and taken home for an entire family. I think that distinction matters even more when the food is homemade, seasonal, and takes a lot of effort to prepare.

One Redditor has spent years bringing a homemade huckleberry pie into the office after picking the berries with family each summer. In the past, leftovers would stay in the breakroom for several days so everyone could enjoy them. That changed after a new coworker started taking leftover goodies home for his nine children.

This year, with berries harder to find, the OP had only enough for one pie and decided to take the final two slices home for herself and her husband. The coworker objected, saying his kids had never tried huckleberries. Scroll down to see why the OP refused to give up the last pieces.

'AITAH for taking my office treats home?'

I have worked at the same office for 6+ years and I am not a baker at all.

But I do have one good staple recipe that I am kind of known for, a completely homemade huckleberry pie!

For those who don’t know, Huckleberries are kinda similar to blueberries but they only grow in high mountain areas in the Pacific Northwest of the US.

They’re a hot commodity and go for hundreds of dollars if you were to buy them from someone.

So my family and I go picking every summer and I come home and make these pies,

and will always bring one into the office and there’s usually quite a bit left over that I’ll put in the fridge and let people eat it throughout the week.

Here comes the issue, a new person started a few months ago, and since they have began working, any prior office goodies

(that had previously just stayed at the office and been eaten till they were gone) have suddenly started disappearing instantly.

If someone brought in cookies they would last 2/3 days and I could expect to have an afternoon treat the day after they were brought in.

Come to find out, this new guy has 9 kids and assumes anything left he can take home to his kids.

Sure it’s fine glad kids are getting a little treat, but it’s annoying when these are office treats and he just assumes they’re free for all.

So this has been happening for a few months and he didn’t know I made these pies.

But it has been a horrible fire season where I usually pick and with the warm winter, there’s hardly any berries!

So I didn’t pick as much as I usually would, and there was only enough for one pie for both my office and home.

Knowing that this guy essentially steals all the food for home, I headed into the break room right before he usually leaves and started to pack it up to take...

He came in and said “oh did someone want your leftovers” and I just said “oh no I wanted the last bit for myself and my husband.”

He got a little defensive and was like “my kids have never had huckleberries and I wanted to give them that experience”

I just said “well, maybe next year you guys can pick them as a family” and walked away.

There was literally 2 slices left and if he took them to his millions of kids, they could have maybe had a bite each.

My coworker said it was rude of me to take that experience away from his kids and he’s been kinda short with me since,

but honestly I don’t think I’m in the wrong cause office treats aren’t meant to feed your family?? Maybe I’m just bitter but I didn’t cook it for your kids..

Edit: I’m adding an Imgur link to my pie so people understand how much work I put into this baby lol thanks for the support

and I feel better knowing I’m a justified a__hole ◡̈.

Edit 2: the huckleberries usually sell for $100/ a gallon didn’t mean pound!

And I need to clarify they grow all over the US and the Canadian neighbors, but I’ve heard they’re completely different outside of western US!

Generosity feels good when it is freely offered. It feels very different when someone quietly turns that generosity into an entitlement. That distinction is what makes this story about far more than two remaining slices of huckleberry pie.

For more than six years, the employee had participated in a small workplace tradition: homemade food was brought in for colleagues, people enjoyed some, and leftovers remained available for the following days. The new coworker appears to have interpreted that custom differently.

Instead of seeing communal food as something intended for the office, he began treating whatever remained as something available for his household.

His motivation may not have been malicious. With nine children, bringing treats home probably felt generous from his perspective. Yet repeatedly taking the remainder changes the social arrangement. The giver is no longer deciding how much to share.

There is also an interesting psychological shift here. People often tolerate small boundary violations because confronting them seems disproportionately awkward. Nobody wants to become the colleague policing cookies in the break room. Consequently, one person can gradually establish a new expectation simply because everyone else remains polite.

The pie maker taking her own leftovers home finally interrupted that pattern. His disappointment then became framed as something she had done to his children, even though those children were never the intended recipients.

Social psychologist Debra Mashek explains that healthy workplace relationships often operate through “communal norms”: people voluntarily provide small benefits because they care about colleagues, rather than keeping a strict ledger of who owes whom.

However, Mashek also emphasizes that if someone discovers they are consistently contributing while others simply benefit, reassessing that arrangement can be appropriate.

That distinction fits remarkably well here. Bringing an expensive, labor-intensive homemade pie was a communal gesture, not a transfer of ownership over every remaining slice. Once generosity becomes something another person expects, especially for people outside the group it was intended for, the emotional meaning changes.

What previously felt like sharing can begin to feel like being used. Research and commentary on workplace “takers” similarly suggests that unchecked taking can erode trust and eventually make generous colleagues less willing to contribute at all.

The coworker’s children are also something of an emotional distraction. Wanting nine kids to experience huckleberries is understandable; believing a colleague is responsible for providing that experience is not.

Suggesting that the family pick berries together next year was therefore surprisingly appropriate. It returned responsibility to the parent without insulting the children.

The healthiest solution may simply be a clearer office norm: treats are for employees during work unless the person who brought them explicitly offers leftovers to take home.

Nobody needs to shame the father, but nobody needs to surrender dessert to avoid disappointing him either. Kindness survives much longer when people remember that a gift remains voluntary right up until the person giving it decides otherwise.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These users said OP is not responsible for feeding a coworker’s children

Cool_Ordinary7216 − Easiest NTA ever. Your two coworkers can pick their own damn huckleberries, so entitled.

Pleasant-Blue-Sky − NTA. Office treats are for coworkers to share with each other. I think it's really entitled of him to assume he always gets the leftovers.

Plus, if his kids have never had huckleberries, he can buy them some. It's not your fault they're expensive.

Brilliant_Contest273 − OH DID SOMEONE WANT YOUR LEFTOVERS? ? NTA. You’re not responsible for providing for his kids. That’s what his salary is for. Yeesh.

BabyElephant818 − NTA. It is not your job to feed his kids. It's a treat for your coworkers. Wild that anyone would assume they got to take it all home.

Serious-Big2 − NTA The crime here, in this age, having 9 kids.

No reason to have this many and quite rude to expect a coworker to bake an experience that he can't afford for his own kids.

These commenters called the coworker entitled for taking office treats home without asking

KaliTheBlaze − NTA. Honestly, I’m shocked that anybody was defending your office leech’s behavior.

Taking home goodies other people brought without asking is some serious entitlement.

I would have gone a step farther than you and pointed out that the office culture is that you all get to enjoy the treats brought into the office until...

If he wants to bring leftovers home, at an absolute bare minimum he should be asking the person who brought them in,

and he shouldn’t even be asking every time, much less taking everything without a word. What a selfish piece of work!

East_Committee_8527 − I have worked in a number of different offices.

To the best of my knowledge no one has ever taken office treats home to their family. This guy is an entitled mooch. NTA

Bookdragon_1989 − NTA. This guy has nerve. It’s your leftovers.

He should be asking whoever brings in treats IF he can have the leftovers. He’s an a** for assuming.

These Redditors suggested clearer office rules so shared snacks stay at work

Puzzleheaded-Sir-861 − Someone needs to post a sign, office snacks are too stay in the office unless being removed by the person who brought them.

DO NOT TAKE OFFICE TREATS HOME. NTA

FarmerMilly − Does he ever bring anything for the office or is he just waiting around looking for his family's next dessert?

NTA! I'd bet money the kids never see any of the office goodies either. Office dud is eating every treat himself.

Would you have taken the pie home without saying anything, or directly told him that office treats are meant to stay in the office? And if someone routinely took every leftover dessert home, would you stop bringing food altogether?
