Woman Stops Letting Friend Stay for Free After He Demands Groceries Like Her Home Is a Resort

Friendship can get complicated when one person keeps giving more than the other, especially when both sides have completely different ideas about what is fair. It may start with small things that are easy to overlook, but after years of one-sided effort, even a simple request can become the final straw.

The original poster (OP) has a longtime friend who regularly travels from another country to visit and usually stays at OP’s home in a popular holiday destination. OP has always been happy to host him, feed him, and make sure he is comfortable.

But when OP finally stayed at his friend’s house, the hospitality was noticeably different. Now, with another visit approaching, the friend made a request that brought all those old frustrations back to the surface. Read on to find out what happened and whether OP is really overreacting.

A longtime host refuses to accommodate his friend after discovering their friendship may not be as mutual as he thought

'AIO for not letting my friend stay at my house anymore?'

I have a long term friend who lives in another country but comes to visit on average about 3 times a year.

I live in a prestigious holiday destination and this is more for him to have a few days in the sun etc than to see me (in all honesty, no...

He has been coming mulptiple times a year for many years. We generally like hosting and always make sure he is taken care of and fed etc.

Last November I decided to visit him for a change and stay at his house for a city break.

The first thing that annoyed me is he said I could only come for 3 days and made some lame excuses

(despite staing at mine for 1 week+ on most of visits) fine, I came on the days he said was suitable.

When staying at his house I was shocked that I was made to take care of myself

and when he was cooking dinner he told me that he was making that for him and that I could sort myself out...

It was quite late in the evening so I had limited options and ended up ordering a takeaway for myself.

I did not say anything at that time as he is not responsible to feed me but I had assumed I would be getting the same treatment he receives at...

Fast forward to this week, he was supposed to come and stay with me for 5 days

and after the experience at his house I was not feeling to great about it and the double standard

The day he was supposed to arrive, I received a message from him saying he was arriving late at night

and please could i go to the supermarket to get him some stuff for when he arrives as he will be hungry.

This really annoyed me because he is always fed and taken care of at my house but he now epects me to go out especially buy him whatevever it was...

I said no. I also told him I found out rather cheeky considering i didn't even get so much as a cup of coffee at his house and was not...

This turned into an argument and he states that that NEVER happened and he would not do that.

He then also proceeded to lie and tell me every time he comes to visit he makes sure he invites me an dpays for dinner as a thank you (also...

I am extremely annoyed about this and honestly feel like I am being gaslit and considering cutting him off completely and lose 10 years of friendship.

It seems it was a friendship of convenience at this stage. AM I OVERREACTING?

There is a particular kind of hurt that appears when generosity suddenly feels one-sided. It is not necessarily about the cost of a meal, a few groceries, or an extra night on a couch.

What hurts is realizing that something one person considered mutual friendship may have quietly become a service arrangement in the other person’s mind.

For the OP, the frustration seems to come less from being asked to buy food and more from the realization that the standards of hospitality appeared to change depending on whose home they were in.

The emotional dynamic is complicated by ten years of history. The OP had repeatedly welcomed this friend, fed him, and made sure he was comfortable, apparently without keeping score. When the OP finally visited him, however, they experienced a very different kind of hospitality.

That mismatch may have changed the meaning of all those previous visits. What once felt like generosity now risked feeling transactional: the friend could enjoy everything the OP offered without apparently recognizing that the relationship might require reciprocity.

There is another perspective, though, that makes the situation less black-and-white. People genuinely have different ideas about what hosting means.

Some hosts treat guests almost like family, while others believe that providing a place to sleep is the extent of their obligation. The friend may therefore not have understood that the OP expected similar treatment.

The bigger problem is what happened after the disagreement. Instead of simply saying, “I didn’t realize you felt that way,” he reportedly denied the experience and disputed other examples of hospitality. That is where an ordinary difference in expectations can become a question of trust.

Psychologist and relationship researcher Harriet Lerner has written extensively about resentment and boundaries, particularly how unspoken expectations can accumulate until a relatively small incident becomes the moment when everything spills over.

Her work emphasizes the importance of recognizing one’s own limits and communicating them rather than silently building a ledger of sacrifices.

That perspective suggests the OP may be reacting not simply to one grocery request, but to several years of unspoken expectations finally becoming impossible to ignore. The request for food was probably the trigger rather than the entire problem.

The OP had apparently never told the friend, “I am happy to host you, but I expect some reciprocity.” Instead, the expectation was inferred from the way the OP behaved as a host. When the friend failed to behave similarly, disappointment was almost inevitable.

At the same time, immediately ending a ten-year friendship may be premature. A healthier boundary could be more informative: stop providing hotel-level hospitality and see what remains when the convenience disappears.

The OP does not have to punish the friend or prove who is right. They can simply stop doing more than they genuinely want to do.

Sometimes the clearest test of a friendship is not whether two people give exactly the same amount, but whether both are willing to acknowledge when the other person feels taken for granted.

If that conversation is impossible, then the real issue may no longer be the groceries, it may be whether there is enough mutual respect left to make the friendship worth preserving.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors agreed the friendship is one-sided and urged the poster to stop being used

CozyCoco99 − Why did you even agree to host him again?

Ok_Play2364 − What friendship are you losing? You're just an all inclusive resort to him

DiskoduckOfficial − NOR and it doesn’t seem like it would be much of a loss if the friendship didn’t continue

wishingforarainyday − Nor. This guy has been using you. He’s not your friend.

These commenters accused the guest of exploiting the poster and manipulating them into accepting unfair treatment

Nervous-Power-9800 − Some people just don't have a clue how to host.

It does sound that you're "the mate with the holiday home" than the friend who happens to have a holiday home. If you get the difference.

NotARobotDefACyborg − Nope nope nope, you're not overreacting, and he \*is\* trying to gaslight you by putting this all in writing.

I'd bet he is showing it to his friends at home so he can "prove" that he pulls his weight when he visits you, honestly - this kind of thing...

briomio − OP, just shut this down now. This man is shamelessly using you; stop allowing him to use you.

The poster said she confronted him, refused to host him, and is considering ending the friendship while working on her self-worth

bettylala − Thank you all for your opinions and replies! I did not expect this to blow up like this.

UPDATE: He is not staying with me and I did send him a message calling him out on everything else (screenshots in the thread somewhere, may delete after)

He is here now and staying with someone else and is messaging me wanting to invite me to dinner to "make it up to me"

I am taking time to process and figure out to just cut him off For those telling me I am a mug or a doormat - YES I KNOW -

this was the final straw and is why I feel how I feel

I did not have the best childhood growing up and was mistreated a lot in my life so find it difficult to have self worth

and value sometimes but I am working on it and calling him out was a step for me.

These Redditors supported setting firm boundaries, saying confrontation may be necessary to change unhealthy friendships

Normal_Row5241 − NOR. I have a friend like that. We've been friends for over 25 years. I cut her off at one point because I had had enough.

She's better now but it took me putting my foot down for her to change.

maverick1973wayfarer − OMG! I am so pleased that you expressed your disappointment with his cheeky request! !!

I would continue with the truth bombs and let him know that you were disappointed when you visited him and will no longer host him.

Was that the end of a one-sided friendship, or could a serious boundary have saved it? If a longtime friend treated your home like a free vacation rental, how long would you keep opening the door?
